I was lucky enough to speak with CJ over the course of 3 days back in 96' when he walked away from tournament play, he had 2 clubs going already, he talked about making way more money in money games out here than any tournament, but next to Earl at his best, CJ was the best naturally gifted player i've ever seen, the table just came easy to him, he was a ridiculously good shot maker

The key to playing better under pressure is to not care to lose. It's just a game, maybe with some $ on it as well, but your life isn't on the line. Even the best pros get beat occasionally by people they shouldn't get beat by, don't forget that.
@kriskringle61733 жыл бұрын
I didnt get started that way but I did use to rack the balls for the older guys and I'd get free pool for doing it. Along with some cash..those guys would play one pocket for a day n a half/ 2 days sometimes. But I was young. I lived in a pool room. I'd stay the night pretty regularly. And I'd get paid 100-200 for tracking and sometimes theyd be so tired by time they were done theyd pay me to drive them home. Those were the good ol days no doubt.

Remember watching this in August of '07 dead broke playing in the Ritz Bowling alley on State St. in SLC; where Dennis happened to be practicing and same room as Mike Massey (in '03) and his European Trick-shot friend during Mike's shark case era before Katrina I think? This is 100% conjecture, but this match was the perfect storm marked by the end of the gambling era(very generally) and the rise of what some of the harder-core players viewed as a flimsy, made for TV type 9-Ball. Courtois's analysis was a burned-out and frustrated often sophomoric retaliation against said game trajectory. Though highly amusing in spots, on deeper assessment quite sad to pluck the 'low-hanging fruit' of someone battling behavioral health difficulties. Van Boening came to prominence and shortly after was the Euro-robot 9-Ball Show. Ironically, Courtois's caustic sense of humor marked the beginning of the end of Pool Rooms in the US. And, to find a good 9-Foot table w/ enough action too at least cover table time is nearly a thing of the past.
@jamesdavis87312 жыл бұрын
Courtois's analysis was spot on. The jump cue is a joke and should be taken out of the game. Strickland was a clown in this match from the opening rack. He literally acted like a spoiled child that didn't want to do his homework.

I don't care how bad Earl played or how dark his mental state was at (many) games, his explosive or some would say negative attitude... He is still one of the Greatest pool player that ever live, and watching him play is a luxury to the eyes, either he wins or loses, that smooth straight strokes and shots he made is just... I've never seen a better stroke. Nowadays maybe Jayson Shaw is closest to him when it's about pocketing balls, but Earl's stroke felt more "good" in my eyes, so satisfying to see him play.

I have no doubt Earl was/is a world class pool player. But him slumped in his chair with his head down. Walkin to the table with his head down etc. That is childish. Trying to shark people, playing little games all the time..and this guy is a true professional . I can stand that crap. That's why I dont like Earl as a person. Hell of a player but..yea. Also..and I dont ever say it while playing because I'm trying to stay focused on task at hand. But that clapping these idiots do after every shot.. honestly.. how about you at least finish the game. If not the match really. You're gonna clap for me after I pocket a ball? That doesnt even mean anything. I can make all the balls but miss the 9 and I lose. All the while these idiots are steadily clapping away. I mean I dont get paid for claps. Keep that nonsense to yourself. If you gotta clap wait till theres a winner. Then clap. Clap when the work is done. You can clap during inyroduction. And clap when the winner is awarded the cash. That's the appropriate times to clap. Any other time you're just trying to shark me. Certainly not making a friend by me with that shit. I do agree with Earl on that much Altho mentioning it in the middle of a match is probably not the best time.. they're gonna keep doing it and it's just gonna amp up the annoyance. People clapping for me when I make a shot is no different than me following you around the grocery store and clapping every time you put something in your buggy that I like..smh. I'm not playing for you.. .. ok? I didnt get into pool to impress you. Nothing about me has anything to do with you. But if you insist on clapping, Clap when the match is over. Clap when I've won. Or even if I lose you wanna clap to tell me you enjoyed watching anyway? That's fine. At least it's over at that point.

I KNOW " EVERYONE HAS OFF DAYS " - YET IT IS THE TOTAL COMBINED COMBINATION FROM BOTH PLAYERS IN THIS MATCH THAT MAKES IT JUST NEARLY UNBEARABLE TO WATCH - EARL NEEDED A " LEGAL STIMULANT " - ONE LONG FAT LINE BEFORE THIS MATCH INSTEAD OF THE 5 XANAX BARS IT LOOKS LIKE HE TOOK - AND C.J. SURE WASN'T " FULL OF ENERGY AND CONFIDENCE " HIMSELF - AFTER WATCHING EARL PLAY FOR DECADES IT IS CLEARLY OBVIOUS THAT HE SUFFERS FROM SOME TYPE OF MENTAL ILLNESS ( MOST LIKELY MANIC DEPRESSION DUE TO HIS SEVERE AND FREQUENT MOOD SWINGS ) - THE U.S. OPEN IS ONE OF ... IF NOT THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS 9 BALL TOURNAMENTS ON GOD'S GREEN EARTH - AND SPECTATORS TRAVEL FROM FAR AND WIDE - PAY $$ GOOD $$ MONEY $$ TO WITNESS AND EXPERIENCE WORLD CLASS COMPETITION - IF EARL STRICKLAND WAS JUST A UNKNOWN - UNPROVEN 9 BALL PLAYER AND ACTED LIKE THIS - THESE COMMENTATORS AND SPECTATORS WOULD RIP HIM A NEW A$$ H×LE !! - THERE SHOULD BE A REVERENCE & RESPECT - A ALMOST SUPERNATURAL FEELING TO CONDUCT YOURSELF TO THE HIGHEST DEGREE AT TOURNAMENTS LIKE THE U.S. OPEN ! ... " GLORY BE TO THE WAR - AND ALL THE LESSONS IT HAS IN STORE " !! - SO MOTE IT BE ! *

Prior to this, CJ and Earl had litigation, CJ didn't pay Earl the 1 million that Earl won in the "1 MIllion Dollar Challenge." I bet Earl's attitude had something to do with this, maybe not though.

Earl always said he never blamed CJ for that, he blamed the promotional company that didn't want to pay up

I think Earl has manic depression

It was painfully obvious Earl was dealing with something and that jack hole announcer just kept piling it on.
