As Earl expresses his relief of surviving a multi-year journey of depression & nihilism using the same poetry that gave him voice through those dark times (being his rapping), the sampling of ‘Fire In The Hole’ also evolves alongside Earl’s optimistic lyricism from an ‘artificial’, repetitive & distorted sample of a guitar solo made by technology (having a similar style to the samples in most of his songs) to an ‘organic’, distinct & clear recording of a mellow piano melody played by a person (a fresh piece of music rarely implemented in Earl’s sampling). Notice how from around 2:01, you can hear the guitar solo being slowly drained out by the piano melody with bits of distortions representing a war of life and death that comes with battling mental illness & grief. When we hear the piano playing alone at the ending, Earl is telling us that he is okay. Through music, his source of clarity & therapy, he tells everyone he’s overcome his depression by the end of the album, and from that, his musical sampling has characterised itself as a healthy, living organ of the rapper’s artistic style for the near future.
@audiosurfarchive Жыл бұрын
Big if true, but a bit over analytical. If he did all the beats himself, I'd be more inclined to believe it. I'm not saying he didn't contribute heavily to production--but he definitely has ownership over the lyrics way more than any beatsmithing/melodic elements. I do dig the interpretation though; thank you for sharing!
@audiosurfarchive Жыл бұрын
Could also argue it's his "soul" returning back to him. From SRS, less so on this, but in general after IDLSIDGOS, he trended toward soul samples with piano as his beat/melodic profile, style, calling card, etc. That's just a cursory analytic take on my end, but that's what I got out of it. Alchemist was cooking for sure, and the various "more accessible" tracks on this absolutely show he could dominate more "normal" rap sounds if his heart wasn't invested in the artistry.
