The 21-year-old spoke with Microphone Check in Austin, Texas, during SXSW a couple days before the release of his second major label album. He says he feels like I Don't Like S---, I Don't Go Outside is really his first album, though. "This is the first thing that I've said that I fully stand behind, like the good and the bad of it," he says. "I've never been this transparent with myself or with music. I've never been behind myself this much."

Third time I've watched this interview. Two Things: 1. NPR knows how to fucking do interviews, man. The formula is simple, I think: *Be. Real.* If you've got a competent staff handling the shit and an _at least semi-interesting_ actor/musician/"artist of another type" to talk to, *_authenticity_** is the first and **_only_** other ingredient necessary* for a compelling interview. The fact that the shit is uncut for an hour just makes it even better. The interview becomes this comfortable thing that you can get invested in, as if you could be sitting there chatting with people you've known your whole life. 2. This is the most "alive" and interested I think I've ever seen Earl in an interview. I don't think he was even this open and interested any time I've seen him in with Sway, who I think normally brings a good amount of energy and life out of his guests. These two (Kelly and Ali) do a great job of getting what _seems_ to be *authentic Earl* (as opposed to the disingenuous, pre-processed, filtered and radio-ready person that people with fame tend to become in interviews) out of him. Big ups to those two for that. Ali obviously knows his way around this shit given his experience re: Tribe, but it's one thing to write music and another to successfully bring out the best in the subject of an interview. Kelly's got a few moments where it's almost obvious she's freaking out a little bit that she's in the same room with/having a conversation with Earl (which is interesting given her experience with Ali), but to her credit she does a great job of keeping things professional, but still loose and fun. Some of these radio shows let these plastic, almost laughably insincere "talking heads" spend almost as much time trying (and failing) to make witty quips _at_ the artists as they do even _attempting_ to bring the _soul_ out of their subjects. We often get two-and-a-half-minute chunks of the artist trying to give interesting answers to prosaic questions while awkwardly dodging interruptions by the interviewer who, at that point, is having trouble dealing with the reality that they've gone 45-seconds without saying _something,_ so they just make noises and shit (lest their listeners forget about them), before going to commercial every two-and-a-half minutes. An hour slot of this will yield twenty-three (ish) minutes of "words" from the "host," roughly seven minutes of the artist asking if the noises the host is making are questions or fucking _sneezes,_ and 30 minutes of the same two Papa Johns and Geico commercials split across six or seven breaks. No substance at all. That shit is not compelling. NPR puts their hosts in a position to have _real conversations_ with their artists, and each of these come off that way for that reason. You can tell there's no pressure there. It's comfortable. I feel like I could be sitting in that room, chatting with _my friend, Earl Sweatshirt,_ (Disclaimer: Earl Sweatshirt is not my friend. I'm definitely not cool enough/smart enough to command the respect of anyone that intelligent at that young of an age.) There's room to breathe in their interviews, and sometimes it's what's _not_ there that can be the difference between an "interview" and an _interview._ I like having nobody trying to sell me a stuffed-crust pizza every three minutes, taking me out of the conversation that I've invested in _because I admire the fucking artist, _*_hence why I tuned in in the first place_*_._ Major ups to NPR, and major ups to Earl. That kid is a genius as far as I'm concerned.

moms spaget oh, my bad. Reading is hard af, I forgot. The most embarrassing thing though, is that you cared _so much_ that someone else expressed their thoughts in something larger than a fucking Tweet, you had to let everyone know _you weren't reading that shit._ If you don't wanna read it, don't read it. Going out of your way to write "TL;DR" is the equivalent of holding up a sign that reads: "long-time member of the 'illiterate and proud' club." Don't worry my man, I got you: www.amazon.com/Daily-Word-Ladders-Reproducible-Vocabulary/dp/0545074762

a lot of people seem to comment on the way earl answers questions, or forms his thoughts in the interview. i assume a lot of the people not understanding his lack of completely clarity derives from a lack of how creatively inclined people think vs. speak. for the most part, an artist is much more productive in getting thoughts out through their art as opposed to casually in day to day conversation. this is exactly why they do what they do; their thoughts or ideas can be so obscured or hard to explain, it's simply much easier to execute it doing what they know best; their craft. as an artist myself, it's also really hard most times to be able to properly explain my vision, because there's either too much to go in depth about, or it's something that's simply just made to be executed through my art. creative people also struggle w/ having constant thoughts or ideas out of nowhere, so it may be hard to keep up w/ their train of thought. no hate to anyone not understanding earl, just a bit of insight to those confused by his coherence

JakexisxCake listen to earl's new release, solace, he talks about how his mind is always racing and how he has trouble articulating himself and I get that completely. I have add and before earl talked about it i never knew other people felt the same way. its not that i can't focus, there are just too many things for me to focus on me for me to have a clear stream of consciousness. which is why i have trouble articulating my thoughts through spoken words.

This young mans level of abstract reasoning, critical thinking, and introspection is a breath of fresh air. This is how I love my artists to be. Man, probably the best 50 minutes of my life. I'm a musician myself, probably 180 degrees different from Earl, but I don't think there's anyone out there I look up to more than this guy. I don't even think Earl means to be a role model, but he really is. I'm slowly learning to transition out of that dismal state in life myself so this is way too inspiring. I wish good things for the dude. Really well done interview by the way, so down to earth.

I love the chill heart to heart style of this interview, instead of loud and obnoxious question after question, "we don't care about you we just want ratings" type of shit, that's probably why Earl said this is the only show he was happy to be on, also learned a shitload about Earl, and that's the point of interviews, but I've never gotten that from anywhere else

@@HutchWordsworth I partially agree but he doesn't do these kind of interviews anymore, to my knowledge, so its hard to say really. I just hope he gives us one lengthy interview soon just to get an idea of where his head space stands. It'll be rather interesting because of how intricate his writing has become. (Sorry if this was rather long comment, Earl is just THAT foo you know)

Isaac Davis I’m not talking about him choosing not to do interviews. When he speaks he slurs his words now and he seems rather lethargic. I think the drugs took a heavy toll on his body. He’s even spoke about it so the proof is there. I just hope he gets better soon

I'm on my way to being where Earl is mentally, well, trying. You can see he's truly thinking about each word he's saying. Nothing coming out of his mouth is filler. And that is 100% the same with his raps. I feel like I'm approaching that stage, within my world, but I'm working on the articulation, translating my scattered thoughts and feelings into real world applicable conversation and sentences. I guess that's growing up, and as Earl says, he's grown.

What he talked about in this interview really spoke to me and refreshened my state of mind. How he talked about emotions ain't logic, how fasting works where you get fucked up to a point of prostration to realize what/who you really are, and to let things flow rather than trying at it and forcing another outcome. These are basic concepts that I have forgotten and it feels nice right now that it was refreshened.

I just bought his album, I dont really even listen to his stuff, used to hate on him, but what little I have heard of his music and listening to him speak was enough to take the leap and buy it. Dude is brilliant, great mind for such a young man. Imagine what he'll be doing 2 decades from now when he's already so bright. Our generation learns and absorbs information like nothing I've ever seen before. I think us born between like 85-95 are the last great generation who are young enough to be with the times but not so young that were completely dependent on our ipads and phones like those younger than us surely will be. We have the best of both worlds and were guna kick some ass, I know it.
