When you pull up your onions use a fork to dislodge them from the soil if you want to keep them for winter. It helps the skin to stay intact and stops the onions from breaking down too fast. Your garden has done very well too. That was a huge onion you lifted. Lucky you. From NZ.

Two other ideas for composting is to dig a trench and all autumn, winter and spring fill with a a small 2 litre bucket of scraps add a layer of ripped cardboard as well, per shovel/spade of soil. Second way, is buy 2 metres of mesh netting make a circle and place in a bed, line with cardboard, do layers of vegetables and cardboard or leaves, when you get to the top a last layer of cardboard and leaves, leave until late spring it will breakdown over the winter, the leaves collect and stored in rubbish bags. Used 5 bags, had it filled by mid winter.

Seren although fig trees are tough, they're not invincible. Maybe move it closer to the greenhouse for next year, that way you can control the weeds and water better. Wow those pumpkin vines are massive. I "was" thinking of trying to gow one, nope, not anymore! 😅 Comfrey, cut it right back, hard prune, then put the leaves on your pathways to dry. They will make excellent mulch once dried and crumbled. Dig them in after harvest.

Loving seeing your progress. Will be good to see the back area sorted next year. If you don't know what type of comfrey it is it might be better getting rid then buying some Bocking 14 (non seeding variety) at a later date. Definitely agree with you that bean arches are so much easier than tipees and i also don't like runners. Recommend trying "sprite" which is a dwarf French bean, its our goto and favorite. Id suggest moving the fig to where your going to have a seating area, that way its easier to remember yo water it plus as it gets bigger they provide a lovely bit of shade to sit under. Longer term they are easier to look after if grown in the ground (with root restriction)

You may want to check about cutting back your fig for winter in your region. In my Zone 3 region, I must bring mine inside so I cut it back to about 6"/15cm, keep it in the dark for several months, and then bring it out when the days begin to get longer. It regrows fine. No! Don't use black plastic under your wood chip on the pathways. Just ensure that the wood chip starts off as close to 8-10 cm as you can get it and with cardboard, that should kill off the grass and most weeds. What a good job you have done on your plot! I'm with you about runner beans. 🤣

Hi Seren, Great harvest. Good call on the runner beans. No point growing something you don't like. The Italians grow runner beans for the flowers, not the beans themselves. Another good call on the woodchip paths and arches for your beans for next year, keeps everything up out of the way. Perhaps give the fig tree a good mulch and feed. Keep up the good fight on the weeding.

@CarryOnPlotting3 ай бұрын
100% with you on French beans vs runner beans. French beans are my favourite veg and I probably won't ever grow runner beans as French beans are just so much better. I am growing 'Cobra' and also 'Sunshine' which is a yellow climbing french bean. I've been a bit disappointed with those however as they aren't producing very well at all. They also seemed to take much longer to climb my canes than Cobra beans. Having said that I have heard some people are finding 'Sunshine' a good producer so who knows. Maybe they don't like my soil? 🤷 If I were to grow another kind of climbing bean it would be something like a butter bean or Greek Gigantes rather than runner beans. Your carrots look bloomin marvelous. Well done on those. My early carrots were a bit rubbish. Very small. Hoping my carrots for autumn and winter are better. Last year my autumn/winter carrots were great. Maybe it was the variety I chose in spring this year.

Grass patches will always be full of weeds. Patches Weil be better if they are not a growing plant but wood chips or cardboard are a much better choice.
@Ragt0p3 ай бұрын
If you have the energy, it’s helpful to shave off the grass in the pathways. Then you can easier pick out weed roots. In any case, I suggest putting down a double layer of cardboard. Where I put a single layer (opened box, as opposed to a collapsed box), the cardboard has composted and dandelions and creeping buttercups are invading my paths. Still easier to pull up, but annoying compared to the paths with no weeds yet. Also, only 500 subscribers until a big milestone!
