Using titbits in teaching retrieving must be done with great care because it is easy with the wrong timing for a dog to spit out the dummy in favour of food, but correctly delivered they can have excellent results.

Thanks ! They need time to think in training, I think sometimes we dont realise but we rush them. By waiting for the turn I know that she has fully registered and will remember where it is.

I've found your channel and I could not be more relieved! In my youth I worked with positive reinforcement trainers. My family has put down a deposit on a GSP puppy and we are looking to train for hunting. There is not a lot of information on training without e collars. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

Hi Mo, Good Luck with your new puppy. I am guessing that you are in the US with your comments about the ec. If you train your pup well from the start you should not have any real issues. This is brilliant! I've just got a 9 week gsp girl and these tips are great! My old border collie mix just kind of learned this behavior by putting it together that i wouldn't throw it again unless he put the ball directly in my hand so wasn't sure how to really teach this on purpose lol

Yes but it will take longer, you can always improve if it is not perfect

Ive always preferred short coated dogs and love the temperament of the GSP, but I have worked with some great KG and GWPs they are always good hunters

Your puppies are always very calm in your videos. I have an English Pointer, 3.5 months old and most of the time she is too excited to really pay much attention to any other training. How do you instil this calm nature?

I try and drop their excitement level in everything I do. Any anticipation or pushy attitude from them means they have to wait, which means they learn to sit or stand quietly before say a door is opened. If they are over excited I just stand still and it will usually prompt them to do the same, it often doesnt need any actual training to get more calmness from them, it is just about your own behaviour. Maybe try slowing things down. You never want to reward excited behaviour or bad manners by giving them what they want !
