He is 'quiet', because he is probably frightened/in despair/feels powerless. For everyone saying “what if my pup isn’t motivated by treats?” You train them while they’re hungry. Don’t feed them till it’s training time (so train in the morning before breakfast). Make your pup work for the food.

My dog loves her crate. She will snack in her crate. If you give her a treat, she runs to her crate. The crate door is open all day, she goes in and out voluntarily. At night, all we have to do is telle her time for bed, she goes in her crate and we shut the door and put a towel over the crate. She is only 4 months and this is her routine. Leaving the door open all day is good. When I go shop, i give her a treat and she goes to her crate. I will then shut the door and tell her she must stay and guard. I am trying to teach her that when the crate is really no longer needed she will just go in, door open and rest and relax until Mummy comes back home. In the morning we open the door and she takes her time coming out, she is very relaxed and loves her

@@jesseenixonI know it’s been 2years since you asked, but I’d like to offer an answer. Crate training is specifically used to get your puppy in a structured routine of toilet/obedience training while giving them a space of their own they feel relaxed and safe in. And showing examples and the idea that the reward comes from inside the box, so smart, but I never would have thought of that, and now I have a better understanding how how to fuse the behavior you want with their brains reward system. Genius. Come to think of it, my wife did that to me years ago and I just didn't know it until now.

I swear I have the easiest puppy ever to train. He just strolled in his crate today and laid down. I've had him 2 days, he goes potty EVERY time he goes outside. He went all night lastnight without having an accident and only got a little fussy. (I implemented the technique you demonstrated in another video of tapping the crate, interrupting the behavior and firmly saying no, then praise when he settled down.) Didn't have an issue after that. And he stays out of his crate all day, but I have a gated off room and am with him all day. This way it is very easy to see when he needs to go outside. Unfortunately, the first kind of treats gave him diarrhea and he's not interested in eating kibble bits when I first started training sessions. He just takes it from me and puts it on the ground. Lol So I'm at a loss right now (until I find the right treat). I want him to learn his name first and foremost, but I don't have anything to reward him with other than praise right now. Any suggestions? I want to avoid playing roulette with dog treats. Lol

My puppy is a slow eater and isn't very motivated by her kibble either. I have a friend who recently got 2 pups,sisters. Sadly they were kept in a barn until the time he purchased them . They were 7 month old Boxers. They're now 8 months. They are going outside for walks & exercise & they do their business outside. But when in they're being paper trained which they have the hang of. Problem is security for both but one of them is actually very high strung. Even gets herself up onto counters & tables. I think she has too much freedom & doesn't quite have limits on her behavior in this regard ( getting into things). The other one is less inclined to do most of that stuff. I tried to tell him to crate train her but he's afraid she will be disturbed by it & thinks it's cruel. I've tried to explain that it can really help her with security while also help keep her safe BC now he's not able to leave his home. Not hard to see how this is a huge problem. I also told him she'd unlikely defecate inside crate if taken outside first. Any suggestions ??Thank you.

This video is so incredibly valuable! I had to place my puppy, whom I brought home only five days ago from about 500 miles away, in a crate for the drive home, than a lot during the first three days because he was not potty trained. So he didn't like his crate. Then two days ago I was able to start crate training following your suggestions, and he already walks into the crate on his own. I'm so very grateful for the wonderful videos you share so generously❣❣❣ Between your videos, and another trainer that I follow, I feel that I'm in a great start with my puppy❣❣ 🙏🏾🙏🏾💜🙏🏾🙏🏾

Our labrador Indy is almost 2 years old and crate training went well....my husband and sons think too well. Especially with Covid and all of us at home, she loves her crate! My husband and sons actually sometimes close the gate to keep her out of the crate🤣

Helpful. But. Hm. The dog already knows the release word “ok” as well as “one more time”. So this is the final result. Would love to see this with an actual new puppy or even older dog that is not pre-trained but being introduced to the confined space of a crate first time. A breed that is less eager to please would be great to see as well.

First day I got my new puppy she was fine in the crate. Slept most of the night. Tonight at 2 am I let her out. When she went back in crate she yowled for 30 mins then rested for and hour then started back up. I am having problems tiring her out. She doesn't really like tug. All she wants to do is do things without me or sit at my feet. I have been luring sit and down and spin. But can't get her to burn off her energy interactively. She has now been howling for 35 mins non-stop. Help! I know you can't let them out or give them any attention while she is doing this but she won't stop long enough for me to go in there and let her out when she is quiet. She also doesn't like eating her food in the crate..

With regard to crate bedding: ours destroys anything and everything you might consider bedding. How do we help with that? I feel bad that he has to lay on an empty crate floor, but don’t want him swallowing bedding.

2 weeks in to having my puppy. He hates the plastic crate but loves the wire. He’s at the point where he’ll whine when he goes in for about 5-10 minutes and then settle down and relax. He willingly will walk in, but then will whine. Is there something I can do to help him not want to bark or whine immediately before settling. Or do I allow him to whine. I feel like I’m doing something wrong

I just found out it is illegal to keep puppies and dogs in a crate in my country. How would one go about creating this comfortable and secure area and prevent door dashing without this smaller area?

Doesn't having the crate in different locations in the house with you create separation anxiety when you're not with your dog?
@erinturner50382 жыл бұрын
I think that's meant to be just in the beginning, to work them through the crate training process. As your dog learns to be quiet and comfortable in the crate, you gradually get them used to being in a different room from you for varying lengths of time.

I messed up and I’ve been placing my puppy in the crate. He seems a little afraid of the crate. Is it too late to start this training?
@melissadekoter35913 жыл бұрын
From all the resources I have, and my past experience training animals (not dogs, or I wouldn't be watching this) it's never too late to start training something, or change how your training. Although, it might be a bit more difficult or time consuming, especially if he's scared of it.

Loving your videos...so what do you do with your puppy BEFORE they are trained to love their crate? Do you not use a crate when you first bring them home, and wait until they are happy to be in there?
@jodykurt99354 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's what we did. Our pup was 8 weeks when we got him. He missed his mommy and litter mates and the crate was traumatizing for him at only 8weeks to be left all alone in it. We allowed him to sleep with us in bed for the first 2 weeks. After that we put in crate for short periods of time for about a week. Then at approximately 3 weeks he started sleeping in it with no issues. He has NEVER pee or poop in crate either

Every video i watch says that we shouldn’t leave them a lone in a crate for more than a few hours but what about when work comes or i have to leave or something? Im getting a puppy and i just want to keep him in the kennel when he sleeps and when im not home, then eventually to where he can sleep with me and stay out when im at work or school? That is growth but how would i do it?
@CruzianR4 жыл бұрын
Puppies shouldn't be in their crate for a long time. We bought a playpen and added a puppy pad. Try it! This is the "area" of your house he mentioned in he video, designated for just your puppy, before he can explore the entire house.
@alainasmithyb3 жыл бұрын
If your gone longer than 4 hours that won’t work. No pup should be left in cage that long unless it’s at night when they are sleeping.

We just got a maltipoo and are potty training it to go on the pads, and i also put pad in her crate, my puppy poop and pee in her crate, should i take out the pd in the crate or no? I THINK THE FEEL OF the pads in the crate makes her think its ok to go in there.

As a suggestion, I have 3 dogs. 16yo, 8months & nearly 3 months. I’ve always considered myself as a someone who has a decent understanding of dogs and ability to train them. Since adding a 3rd puppy it’s been a difficult process. He is a Rottweiler. Fantastic puppy, however, having 2 puppies the 8 month old who is such a well behaved fella (German Shepherd x Husky x Staffordshire bull terrier) constantly distracts my Rottie due to energy/enthusiasm. Due to his age of 8months he is also very jealous, but loves the rottie. He just needs to be engaged at all times when trying to train the Rottie. I would love a video on how to train in a scenario where you have multiple dogs. Without isolating, if that is possible? I’m definitely getting there but it takes much longer and I can’t find any videos online.

100% agree. Its been a while since you commented this, but I’m struggling with the same problem. I have a 3 month old border collie, a 10 yr old border collie mix and a 1 yr old cat in a smal apartment. This can be exhausting at times
