Most games are like that, I actually hate to learn how to play a game from KZbin/guides/walkthroughs, games should be intuitive and informative so we can just play the game and find out about all the game has just by playing it. @@afr4y117 It all takes practice and experience, really! In the early game there's usually plenty of food lying around ready to be picked up - seeds, berries, carrots, cactus, etc. Once you have a base set up, a berry patch can be nice, as is a spider nest nearby for monster meat. Being able to convert Monster Meat into Eggs is super nice, and for big meats, set up some pig houses nearby, hunt a koalefant, or go kill some beefalo or tall birds. With experience you'll start to understand where to get the best bang for your time investment, as well as learn how to prioritize all the different and sometimes competing tasks that might need to be handled. It's still a good idea to go for at least one farm so you can make powdercake early on if lucky, if you decide to replant berry bushes that is... Gobblers can be baited with berries, but powder cake lets you totally wall it in and never worry again in your savefile about them gobbling up your berries. Of course, pigs also get baited by it, if you move their huts you will want it, although you can sacrifice one pig skin which never rots to bait them anyway. Even one harvest of 40 berry bushes will provide more than enough filler until you can mine ice in the winter and even if any of that rots, it's perfect, farming berries is much safer and easier than finding lightbulbs (I'm posting this with new players in mind anyway), because they can be planted in your base, and you don't have to open up a sinkhole which may lead to bat annoyance if you placed your base in a bad spot (people who experienced that a few times know how to fight bats or not to build near them to begin with), and the powdercake is obviously for baiting the gobblers, who provide meat, technically you can survive on nothing but berry bushes because of this as one drumstick and 3 berries is all you need for meatballs. But that's the thing, meatballs are a food that's only good for camping at your base, for travels, you want something better, and you're free to search for it, as you have 2 full days to do so due to you now overflowing with meatballs at base, and never being worried of coming back on empty stomach with nothing to cook. And honestly, people underrate farms. Yeah they're a lot of investment to have meaningful production output, but with some luck of just few plots with random seeds, cooked pumpkin gives 37.5 hunger and 8 health, while cooked eggplant gives 25 hunger and 20 health and cookedpomegranate gives 20 health and 12.5 hunger, while uncooked corn gives 25 hunger in case you have enough powder cakes, making them amazing snacks coming from literally just some random seeds, grass, rocks and shit that everyone will have just by playing the game correctly, you don't even really need to duplicate seeds with a bird, simply enjoy the random treats, as little effort as possible. In fact, eggplants and pumpkin are so good, and so easy to "prepare" and eat for health, that I recommend pretending that dragon pies don't exist, because bacon and eggs, pierogi and even meat hams if you catch some bees will be easier to make from all that monster meat you get by farming other things like silk from spiders and teeth from hounds, whose dens specifically are in the desert, full of cacti. I always go for beefalo because I like beefalo hat, this means I will be shaving and killing some. I get a lot of excess fur which is a good fuel, and naturally they poop a lot so I collect some aswell and really, without going out of my way, I can easily build 2-3 farms and have something grow in them before winter, if you're organized and prepared for everything else, it's not much effort to walk to science machine and craft a few as you should have excess materials easily. Of course, it is my preference, and I sacrifice grass tuft and twig replanting for berry bushes, so I have time to build farms, I guess. Right on day 1, I grab 40 flower petals and let them rot as I search for things, once I have basic science machine, I make a spade and go, dig up 40 bushes, and plant them in my base pretty much as I decide where it should be. This is because I think that replanting twigs and grass really isn't a priority, it's much better to prioritize food. After all the world is littered with grass and twigs and for example, searching for beefalo naturally will lead to me harvesting 1-3 stacks of grass alone because I can grab it as I explore. And I will always have stack+ of twigs and grass which never rots, so if I feel like I will run out, I can leave my base and gather more before it happens, while doing that for food reasons will probably make you choose very bad decisions.
@salendrak13 күн бұрын
I think it really just comes down to personal preference and how you like to play the game. There are plenty of people on Reddit and elsewhere that have this chip on their shoulder that if you aren't player uber optimally, then you're doing it wrong. It's a game. Play it to have fun! If you enjoy being a berry farmer, go for it! If you enjoy feeding yourself with the most optimal use of in-game time and clicks, do something else! But so long as you're having fun, you're doing it right! Also - Bundling Wrap!

A perfectly viable approach! I generally only use jerky as a back-up food for getting patched up after, say, fighting a Deerclops, or getting back to sane when I intentionally go crazy to farm shadow fuel. Although some players like to stay pretty crazy all the time, I get annoyed by the distortion effects and sounds. What can I say - I prefer the cheery world!!

@@salendrak Well, it's true that fighting the deerclops while insane is VERY annoying, but the only negative thing of insanity (apart from shadow creatures, beardlings and beardlords) is that the forest turf during the dusk has got the same color of the shadow creatures. Tbh, base building and farming is the least of my favorite when playing don't starve. I just love to explore and live like a nomad. Eating whatever I could find and picking any weird items I found but unfortunately my inventory space isn't that much even with backpack and chester. I love fighting random monsters too but I suck at kiting so I've never got really far playing don't starve. I want to play dst so I could leave base building and crafting to other player who love to do that but I don't have a pc. I wish they would release dst on mobile

Is there a way to see in game which property (hunger, health, sanity) each food item restores? That’s what I’m struggling with right now.. even if I make some food, I never know which one I need to restore health so I end up trying and thus wasting precious food that I could’ve saved for the right moment… the stats you show for the food really helps but wish i could see that info in game too 😕
@salendrak Жыл бұрын
There are mods that add that information, but on the base game, no. I've never personally used those mods, but do remember learning the game with a couple of key wiki pages open almost all the time, including the crockpot recipes. Once you learn a few key recipes by heart though it gets much simpler. Have you seen my food guide?
@BlingBlingDubuLove Жыл бұрын

Other (and actually better options) are cooked green caps, cooked cactus flesh, and jerky. Once you get a Tam 'o Shanter maintaining high sanity is really easy!

Can you please also advise where to place the flingomatic? Thanks mate.
@salendrak4 жыл бұрын
Disclaimer - I personally don't like using flingos so I can stay at my main base during the summer. Takes to many to protect everything, and there's still things that can sometimes go wrong. Instead, I prefer to set up a very small satellite base where there isn't much flammable stuff nearby, such as the desert, and just use one flingo for my flamable mini-base structures, such as a chest or three, maybe 2 crock pots, and a couple of drying racks.

@salendrak4 жыл бұрын
Yes - eventually! My plan is to cover all the basics of RoG first and then move on to SW. So for RoG we still need to cover Spring, Summer, Caves and Ancient Ruins, Adventure Mode, and any other major topics that warrant a full guide. But don't worry - I'll get to SW eventually!

Apparently the standard base configuration used in this video isn't viable in DST. They've increased the collision radius of the crockpot such that you end up with a diamond shape instead of the standard rotated square.
@salendrak3 жыл бұрын
Are you using geometric placement? You can still get a good formation a couple of ways. Option 1 - place left and right crock pots on the X just inside the lines of the tile, then for the top and bottom use your eyeballs and squish them in as close as you can with geometric placement off. Might not be a perfect square, but still allows room for at least 2 ice boxes in the middle. Option 2 - place all 4 crock pots on the cross-lines of the tiles. This ends up a bit more spaced out and might look funny depending on what you're doing with underlying turfs, but leaves PLENTY of space to fit ice boxes and/or salt boxes in between the pots such that you can reach all 4 pots from any of the food storages.
@jordanchen233 жыл бұрын
@@salendrak yeah I tried turning it off to practice placing the pots in a test world but I don't have your knack for placement :(

Love your guides, but one question do you have to build fences, wood walls, or stone walls around your base or does it not matter if you don’t build stone walls around your base?
@salendrak3 жыл бұрын
Walls can be used as decoration and in a few niche farming methods and bait pens, but they're overall pretty useless. There is NO need to surround you base with walls. To the contrary, it's a BAD idea to surround your base with walls!

I don't think you touch on it in this video, but why use signs and traps to mark important resources instead of a simple mod?
@salendrak3 жыл бұрын
Mostly because other than the minimap and combined status mods, I've never used any other mods. And also because there's plenty of people that play on platforms that can't have mods! In DST though I think there is a thing that allows you to easily mark paired wormholes, which is nice. But I have no issue with people using mods to do the same thing.

Nope - unfortunately they don't. Generally speaking though there are more than enough clockworks on the surface to take care of your basic base needs, and of course there will be many more down in the ancient ruins. There's also the option of World Hopping (generating a new world via the Teleportato) to get access to additional materials, but I've honestly never felt the need to do that.
