In this biographical video we focus on the earlier years of the future Hammer of the Scots, Edward Longshanks.
Covered within are the turbulent years of the Second Barons' War, which saw the rise of Simon de Montfort, the Provisions of Oxford, as well as the Battles of Lewes (1264 AD) and Evesham (1265 AD).
Then we chart Edward's crusade to the Holy Land and his uphill struggle against Baibars, which culminated with the infamous attempt on his life in the June of 1272.

The videos on this channel remind me of the old, slower paced history documentaries of the 90s, and last I checked those videos turned into spooky alien videos. I like this History Hub.

Very good biography on Edward so far. I take it you used Marc Morris's excellent book, "A Great and Terrible King: Edward I and the Forging of Britain" as a source.

One of my favorite medieval kings. You can easily see how Edward greatly inspired Tywin Lannister in game of thrones. I think the only King more interesting than Edward was Richard the Lionheart.

Can we get Henry I&II? 2 very interesting figures. Right up there with Edward III. Leagues above Richard who was a Very good warrior but a poor ruler

Lionheart is the most overrated monarch in the entirety of European history imo, don’t get the fascination other than with devout Christians who like him for the crusades. He was a very good general but a terrible king as the person above stated. He didn’t care about the land or people he ruled, preferred France, saw himself as French, buried in France, taxed England to hell and back to fund foreign wars, he basically never even spent any time in England at all and used it to fund his personal adventures trying to gain renown for himself.

It's crazy how when watching Braveheart year's ago i always thought that Longshanks was an actual Ænglisc King, but now i know better and know that the only real true Ænglisc King's were all before 1066 and proper Anglo-Saxon that probably came from the line of Cerdic who claimed to be descended from Woden himself...🤔🤷‍♂️

Nevertheless, Edward is an Anglo-Saxon name. It is said that Edward's parents admired King Edward the Confessor and thus named their son after him.
@ashtonbarwick6696
@ashtonbarwick6696 Жыл бұрын
The Plantagenets were descendants of Cerdic too. Matilda of Scotland (house of Wessex) married William the Conquerors third son Henry Beauclerc. Their daughter Empress Matilda married Geoffrey Plantagenet and thus the line of Cerdic was united with Rollo.

22:25 the ruling Christian Princes of middle age western Christendom, were not absolute monarchs and could not do with ever they wanted. Firstly, the soo called divine right of kings was a system invented and first practiced by James I of England, then it eventually spread to the continent later on. Every Catholic ruler not only HAD to follow the morality and laws of God ,they had to follow all the MANY different laws that organically developed over the centuries in every town, shire , county and dukedom whose laws were all different from each other's, and all being different from the crown lands as well. The Crown and The Church were two separate entities that worked together to keep each other in check but neither had anything close to absolute power. Objectively , we can see just how successful the system of the Catholic Monarchy truly was, it lasted for well over a thousand years in most of Christendom. Fact.
