Andrew Cuff - Fossils

Күн бұрын

After 5 months away from one of my favourite spots on the Yorkshire Jurassic coast, I am back to Port Mulgrave in search of fossils. The rains have caused lots of falls so I am in search of some quality ammonites, and hoping for more.

Thanks! There are some cool finds to come, although I've been targeting dinosaurs and the skeletal remains are very rare midsummer

A nice hunt with plenty of finds! Shame the perinosaurus ammonite exploded on you. Would it be worth gluing and prepping or was it too far gone? Happy hunting

The Peronoceras might have been saveable but it generally isn't worth the effort unless the specimen is a rare one. That opinion might change as I get more prep kit and am not having to spend many hours on simple finds let alone the complex ones

Great hunt, good to watch and learn from. I've got a question. I wonder why dacs are almost always better preserved than othe species and split better?

I think it varies a lot. Location-wise Port Mulgrave-Sandsend the dacs tend to split nicer than Saltwick. That being said not all the dacs at Port split well. It should also be noted that some of the other ammonites at Saltwick tend to split out well or at least prep better (Hildis and Harpos) than the dacs presumably due to less ribbing making those species easier. I can't say for this individual ammonite. The Peronoceras might have been badly preserved, but they also seem to be trickier to split due to the ribbing and nodes

Interesting. It's always exciting when they split nicely 😊 Thank you!
