I just sold a cut to clear cobalt vase. I plucked it from a Goodwill basket for 99 cents. It was headed for smashing. I was attracted by the cobalt color and felt the weight and smoothness of the edges and base. I got 45$ !!!! I am over the moon!

Madras is the name of a city in India and it gives its name to Madras fabric, which can be patterns other than plaid but we usually use the term to refer to plaids. It does not have to be patchwork (pieced together). Any strong, colorful finely woven cotton can correctly be referred to as Madras. The key is the fact that it's cotton and colorful.
@donnawheeler1351
@donnawheeler1351 4 жыл бұрын
Probably should also have mentioned that India is known for its cotton production and the city is no longer called Madras -- it's Chennai now.
@jamiepaul8041
@jamiepaul8041 4 жыл бұрын
@@donnawheeler1351 yes you are correct. Madras refers to a tight, fine, woven and colorful pattern, usually plaid but not always. Madras plaid can be used in patchwork construction, but the patchwork construction is not 'Madras' plaid. Patchwork is patchwork - you could do patchwork in buffalo plaid, but that doesn't make it Madras. Thanks for getting the correct info out there. Unfortunately, a Google search for 'Madras plaid' includes some prominent pictures of shorts made with patchwork construction using Madras plaids, which sucks for folks trying to research. Appreciate good info in comments, always!!!! Thank you!

@@jamiepaul8041 what distinguishes a buffalo plaid from a madras plaid?
@donnawheeler1351
@donnawheeler1351 4 жыл бұрын
@@fcohen8296 Buffalo plaid only has two colors (usually red and black) and is large and blocky, like a buffalo. It's often flannel and heavier fabric than Madras, which is a lightweight fabric. Madras often has many different colors woven together, usually brights or pastels.

25 years - wow. I started a shop in about year 3 and finished up 6 years ago. Ebay was good to me. Things changed about 7 years ago and the profit margins just weren't what I wanted with increased charges, so retired to the beach. Always enjoy your channel and best wishes. Madras - is a place in India known for its inexpensive bright coloured cotton fabric.

I love Allbirds! I've sold mens and womens and gotten in the $60 range every time - all day every day as you say! YES! lol. I got a pair of Allen Edmonds because of you. They turned out to be one of the really high end models. $90-$100. Will be listing them soon. I also came across for $7 a pair of Roger Vivier that I sold for $100! Shoes can be a pain, but also a gem. Quality Quality Quality! I love Chacos too. Esp the sandals. OTBT I think is pronounced OH TEE BE TEE. Not 100% sure. Anyway - be well!

Not that I think you will find many of these at thrift stores, but when finding heavy pants (you refer to this in your sailcloth description), the fabrics of Kevlar and Nomex will also frequently have the cross hatch pattern. These are usually very expensive tactical pants with lots of storage pockets, grommets and possibly mesh for air flow and lots of hook & loop closures. These are mainly for wildland or structural firefighting, but I don't think you'd see those being donated very often. They should be clearly marked if they are Kevlar or Nomex. If you find them, they may bring very good $$ as they are fire resistant and heavy duty and in the $300+ range new.

HI Karen, Madras is a fabric, patchwork is a stitching/sewing technique. The two are often combined but they are not the same thing. Many lightweight summer garments are made of Madras fabric without a patch in sight. In the 60s everyone was mad for "bleeding Madras" because the colors would run during the wash and this was considered cool. Always enjoy your videos. Hope this info helps!

The word Madras originated in India. Madras plaid is a lightweight plaid fabric, usually cotton. It does not have to be patchwork, it can be cut from whole cloth. Also, if a shirt is made in China, it is not a true Hawai'in shirt--it is a Hawai'in style shirt.
