Robert is winning. He is old, he has been in the industry for so long. He has made billions for Hollywood playing iron man (and sherlock homes) . An oscar will be a good reward for him. He is charismatic, he is going to campaign hard. He has a huge social media following. He is loved by his peers.

He can't currently campaign yet for obvious reasons but I do agree it does feel like "his time" to win, as he gives a performance that would be both deserving and a "career award" (my same thoughts on Bradley Cooper in Maestro).

De Niro has to be nominated. His role in Killers of the Flower Moon is possibly his best portrayal of a villain ever even over Cape Fear and Heat. Him and Scorsese still being so good in their 80s is just crazy to me, two absolute masters

Robert Downey Jr, will hopefully win. He should have won for his phenomenal performance in Charlie Chaplin in 1993. Al Pacino won that year for his outstanding performance in Scent Of a Woman. Actually all of the nominations where quite brilliant that year x

Simply put, it’s RDJ’s turn. How is it that he will be sixty in a couple of years and never won an Oscar when so many lesser lights have? You’re right. He should have won for Chaplin. I think he didn’t win because he was young and so obviously talented, they’d have plenty of opportunities to award him. Obviously, that’s not what happened. It’s his time. I won’t say it’s in the bag for him, but yeah.. I think that’s probably going to be on the Oscar voters’ minds when they mark their ballots, that along with his brilliant performance in Oppenheimer.

Think you can bet the house on De Niro getting a nom, and challenging for the win. Looking forward to "Poor Things" and I hope you're right about Ruffalo- always have loved his work and thought he deserved a win for his breakthrough role in "You Can Count on Me," IMO as big an oversight as Anthony Perkins being ignored for "Psycho" (looking forward to your upcoming video on the Perkins' snub!).

I feel as though it’s going to go one of two ways. They give it to Gosling because his performance was not only great but had a profound impact on pop culture that year; also it’s the industry’s way of rewarding Barbie with a big reward as a “thank you” for helping bring back blockbuster films….. Or they pull a Meryl Streep in Iron Lady win for DeNiro as a congratulations for decades of great work, especially since this is apparently the best performance he has given in years. I see your view point on why they would give it to Downey Jr. and I think that is a very possible outcome. However you could also make the same argument with Willem Defoe . He’s never won, the Academy adores him, and he’s consistently been putting in great performances for decades.

Excellent picks, the same as GoldDerby. Having seen all five, they all give great and worthy performances deserving of the acknowledgement from the Academy. I think it's really a race between Downey Jr, De Niro, and Gosling as well, but if anyone can be the dark horse in this race, it's Mark Ruffalo, who gives such a delicious and rich performance in Poor Things where he chews up the scenery in the best way possible, I can see him ride the enormous wave of love we may see for the movie this season. Dafoe is also excellent, adding some depth and humanity to the mad scientist he plays in the movie. I can attest to the fact that Charles Melton is great in May December and definitely worthy of awards recognition. Jacob Elordi is really good in Priscilla and his Elvis accent is top notch, but I have doubts that movie will get awards recognition outside of Cailee Spaeny's performance. John Magaro is wonderful in Past Lives but I feel may get drowned out with the 4th quarter heavy hitters. He does have the benefit of getting able to campaign for Past Lives through a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement, so maybe not all hope is lost there. Excited to see Dominic Sessa in The Holdovers next week and Colman Domingo in The Color Purple on Christmas. I don't see it for Jesse Plemons, he doesn't really have enough screentime in the movie for that much of an impression (same with Brendan Fraser). Thanks for another great video, Brian ❤

Glenn Howerton as former co-CEO Jim Balsillie in "Blackberry" was hands down thee best acting performance I saw all year. Every single scene he's in is chillingly captivating, to the point it's almost scary at how convincing he is. Howerton is the off-the-radar threat to all those expected precursors (De Niro, Gosling, Dafoe) getting snubbed. Most of the critics have overlooked him, except for Tariq Khan at Gold Derby, largely because the film premiered way back in February at the BerlinIFF while last year's Oscars were in full swing. IFC Films just needs to kick his awards campaign into high gear; a nomination for Howerton here would be a big win for their waning production company who haven't really seen much awards success since "Boyhood" nearly a decade ago. All that said, Howerton is my surprise, Brian Tyree Henry-esque, nomination prediction, Brain. @theacademy @ifcfilms @glennhowerton #BestSupportingActor #Oscars

I haven't seen the Barbie movie. I'm probably the only collector that hasn't, but isn't Gosling a co lead. It would make sense to campaign him in supporting since he played Ken who is just Barbie's accessorie.

De Niro not getting a nomination for The Irishman was a travesty. He was INCREDIBLE. That phone call scene alone should have gotten him a nom. What a actor. This year,my vote goes to Downey.

Robert De Niro "is kind of an icon at this point". Are you serious? He's not "kind" of an icon. He IS and has been an icon for decades.

Finally someone mentions him. One of the most underrated films of the year. That scene where he does a Dennis Reynolds-esque outburst saying “I’m from Waterloo, where the vampires hangout!” should honestly make him a frontrunner 😂

Totally agree but it won't happen. The film will be overlooked unfortunately. He was amazing though.

What about Coleman Domingo for "Color Purple?" He's supposed to be a double nominee for that & his great lead performance in "Rustin," which is the best thing about that film! Your list is #oscarssowhite.

I just don’t see RDJ winning. To me, it is between Gosling and Ruffalo. This might be foolish, but for some reason I just don’t buy RDJ. I think Oppenheimer is being overrated by pundits (I don’t see it winning two acting awards, and think Cillian Murphy will win Lead). Also, Tom Conti (Einstein) deserves the win, but I know that is not happening.

lol @ the argument that De Niro hasn’t been nominated much since SLP. What has he done that was worthy of a nomination outside of ‘The Irishman’? ‘The War With Grandpa’? ‘Amsterdam’? ‘Dirty Grandpa’? His miss for ‘The Irishman’ could be chalked up as a fluke, and I think the first half or so of the film he is de-aged, and that kind of soured it a bit for some folks. His work in KOTFM is undeniable IMO. His best performance in over 3 decades, and he’s likely contending for the win.

How are you counting out The Color Purple performances when you havent seen it? Danielle Brooks is a Tony nominee for the same role and Taraji is an Oscar nominee. Hmm, odd

your biggest mistake is assuming DaFoe is in the 5th spot. a 5x AA nominee with an amazing acclaimed filmography also revered by actors, critics, and audiences while in a BP winning contender. he's not in 5th hes in contention to win. if he wins the globe he's sweeping. If he wins the bafta he can upset. plus DaFoes make up is the only contender thatll challenge Maestro's make up. It is way more DaFoe's time than RDJ

My current GoldDerby predictions (as of 29.10.23): 5. Dominic Sessa (The Holdovers) 4. Robert De Niro (Killers of the Flower Moon) 3. Mark Ruffalo (Poor Things) 2. Ryan Gosling (Barbie) 1. Robert Downey Jr. (Oppenheimer) RDJ better win this shit or *so help me* This is a case where my top 4 feel absolute locks, and then the 5# is a death match. I want desperately to put back John Magaro (Past Lives) in there, but I feel like he's completely lost heat. I'm also having a hard time believing Willem Dafoe (Past Lives) because of recent cases like Nightmare Alley were they snubbed him. Charles Melton (May December) and Sterling K. Brown (American Fiction) are very close behind Sessa, and probably stand above Magaro by this point. I'm not buying Colman Domingo (The Color Purple), Glenn Howerton (BlackBerry), any of the other Oppenheimer boys or anyone from Air.

I have no idea why everybody thinks Gosling is getting in, or could even win. I really don't think it's gonna happen. It's not the kind of performance they go for. And yes he was great in it. He was great in The Nice Guys too. It doesn't matter. To be honest I also don't see it happening for either of the guys from Poor Things. I'm going RDJ, De Niro, Charles Melton, Dominic Sessa and... I don't know, Colman Domingo for Color Purple? Jesse Plemons? That final slot is kinda up in the air right now. Maybe Dafoe WILL get in there and I'm still just bitter from his Lighthouse snub.

Maybe it’s because I liked the movie so much, but people and critics are really sleeping on Barbie. If WB decides to use the same marketing genius they used while promoting the film, Barbie it’s gonna have big chances of sweeping the awards. The award campaign could be genius.
