The way Netflix fumbled “His Three Daughters” makes me sad. Like Natasha had a winning path. She’s a respected veteran with a brilliant/Legendary career. She’s showing a completely different side of her talent. Never in a million years did I think she had something like that within her. She easily could have won on her first nomination following in the footsteps of Cloris Leachmen and Allison Janney.

I really think that Zoe is campaigning hard because she does have a little bit of biased overcome with terms of really only doing marvel in the past few years and she had that debacle with the Nina Simone movie. I do think that there’s enough people that could rally behind Felicity to give her the Oscar. And I love you to bits Brian but you’re underestimating a lot of the good will people have for Selena Gomez so if she can hit with enough people, I think she get a nomination. (I do need to see the movie so forgive me because I still haven’t seen this film. And you’re probably correct that she’s just a little underwhelming, but I’ve seen a lot of people saying that they think she’ll get a ). Also, I don’t know if maybe you were only talking about film acting, but Elle Fanning‘s been nominated a lot for her work on the TV show The Great . She’s really broken out from that role to show what a strong actress she is.

It could, though Judi's main scene was longer, and unlike Isabella, she also had another big significant scene to build on earlier in "Shakespeare in Love." Sadly, I rather agree with Brian. I feel that if Isabella had gotten one more great scene, she would be a shoo in for BSA, especially as one of the recurring themes in "Conclave" is the gendered hierarchy of the Church. I loved her big scene, which was a very significant action in the film. I and some other audience members actually cheered for her at that moment. But I have another favorite moment with Isabella that keeps sticking in my mind. She has a face-off with Ralph Fiennes' Cardinal Lawrence, who demands to see a nun upset whom Sister Agnes (Rossellini) is protecting. Sister Agnes keeps telling the Cardinal that she is handling the situation, but Lawrence pulls rank and gets to question the nun by himself. Isabella's acting here is amazing. With just a glare she communicates how much she wants to protect the nun, even from the Cardinal, how much she resents having to bow to his authority and her knowledge that there's nothing she can do to stop him. That she in fact knows more about what's happening. thsn he does in that moment only adds to the tension. It's a very pregnant moment and typical of the work of the cast of "Conclave," all of whom have fantastic moments without saying a word. (Frankly if there was a "Best Cast" acting Oscar, this cast would definitely deserve a nomination.) I'm not sure I see a nomination for Isabella, which makes me sad because I love her. But I'm glad she's campaigning and that can't hurt her chances. Good luck to her!

For A Complete Unknown, I'd keep my eye out on Monica Barbaro. Variety had her in their stars to watch list, which makes me think she may have a bigger role than Elle Phanning. I could definitely see that film being carried to a BP nom with a bunch of actors and a tech or two... if the movie is good of course

Every time there was an open 5th spot (or even 4th) someone without much (or any) precursors support gets in as a coattail surprise of either best picture contender or a strong, locked actor-actress contender. Especially if there is not a clear 5th place and many contenders from genre, non Oscary, or very small or panned films are trying to get in. Think about 2012. Hathaway, Field, Hunt were locked. Adams was kinda safe and Smith in a mainstream comedy that didnt have any other chance in any other category (Marigold Hotel-SAG NOM), Kidman in a panned film (Paperboy-SAG+Globe), Dench in a genre film(Skyfall-BAFTA+Critics Choice) were battling themselves for the 5th spot. In the end Jackie Weaver who was seen by every voter and was in a beloved film got in as probably being placed by many voters as 5th place on their ballots cause they were lazy or did not take seriously these other contenders. Think 2014. Jessica Chastain and Rene Russo were fighting for that 5th place one was in a no one cares film of the year other was in a very dark one that was ignored, Laura Dern got in as a coattail of a locked Witherspoon. Think last year, many contenders but from either divisive(May December, Saltburn) or smaller films, America Ferrera got in as a best picture coattail. This is telling that Rossellini has A STRONG CHANCE cause even if her small screentime she DOES HAVE AN OSCAR CLIP AND WILL BE SEEN BY EVERY SINGLE VOTER cause of the strong best picture buzz. Ellis Taylor also stands a great chance as long as Nickel Boys is a solid best picture contender. Gomez should be then in an also great position but being a pop star or instagram star is a hard to overcome (Gaga second time, Lopez, etc). Deadwyler is in danger imo although being available on Netflix could help her.

I think you’re completely overlooking the film “September 5” on all fronts. Leonie Benesch is so compelling in this film, that of the entire cast, she is thee most likely to be nominated. She is coming off of a wave of acclaim from last year’s Best International Film nominee “The Teachers’ Lounge”, coupled with the newly integrated larger international membership of the Academy, Benesch should be considered more of a likely nominee than pundits are giving her credit for. #foodforthought
