@@JoePkSpearfishing we know it takes a lot of effort to edit material and I don’t want to turn that into a wish list lol I guess it’s quite easy to forget how it was on the start. Most of the videos don’t show the struggle, and effort to shoot that 1 fish in a day, it all seems so effortless like “ aye jumped in, dived 5 times, shoot 2 fish, got a lobster and 5 scallops, easy AF, all took 1h” When I sometimes sit in the water 4-5h and can’t find anything but tones of sea urchins and undersized crabs and fish

Bass sometimes have worms in the belly, it doesn't have so much to do with the age, more the healthy immune system and the number of parisites in the area. It's normal to take the fillet knife and trim some off the belly 👌 Congratulations with the 7er that is a belter!!!

Joe just wanted to say thanks for the hours of amazing insights your vids provide. Currently working on breatholds and just managed to do 2 min 30 secs dry and very proud with myself even with just that 😄. Can you give us a rough idea of your average length dive that you would say you do? Also, would a 90 be a good size for a beginner in Cornwall? (Lizard) and lastly, would you bother with roller or just keep it simple to begin with?
@JoePkSpearfishing
@JoePkSpearfishing 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Shai, the average length dive probably around 1 minute… can be up to 2 minutes if I’m going deeper. 90 sounds ideal for hunting the Lizard area. Have you chosen your gun yet?
@ShaiAharony
@ShaiAharony 3 жыл бұрын
@@JoePkSpearfishing that's actually quite reassuring. Ill keep trying to get to 3.30 dry in the hope that 2.00 minutes while swimming will be comfortably achievable. With regards to the gun, im looking at a either a Cressi Cherokee 90cm or playing with the idea of getting a rob Allen tuna roller but getting the feeling thats a bit of an overkill here in the UK. I like to buy good equipment right from the start rather than buy then regret. Any suggestions?

Yeah, whilst we're talking about sustainability - those double figure sea bass are the broodstock for future generations and should be left alone. Very few anglers will take a fish of this size these days and there is a solid argument for having a maximum as well as a minimum size for bass.
@JoePkSpearfishing

Nice. The images of the shoals of bass are great. Is the water on that side of the Atlantic so blue and so clear? I dive in NY USA. The water around here has a strong green cast. As the water turns warm it gets worse. I see shoals of striped bass that look similar but larger, but it is hard to take a very clear picture (and the legal size slot is limiting 28 to 35 inches about 71 to 88 cm). Great vid
@JoePkSpearfishing
@JoePkSpearfishing 3 жыл бұрын
Oohh I would love to hunt and cook a striped bass one day! The water in fact is on the green side, I colour grade the footage otherwise it is pretty green and faint to see what's going on!
@stefpix
@stefpix 3 жыл бұрын
@@JoePkSpearfishing striped bass are probably slightly easier. The issue is that where I go I saw huge schools, but most are shorts. I don’t breath hold as long as you do, and you have to judge the length. How do you remove the green and turn it into a more blue hue? I usually just use the curves in Final Cut Pro. Probably striped bass and the Mediterranean Sea bass are equivalent species on each side of the Atlantic. The stripers also go to fresh water. I mostly see them in shoals. But in the UK it looks you have diversity, more rocks and reefs. In the USA the access to the coastline for the public seems a lot more limited than in Europe, at least here in the north east. But yes, the striped bass seem larger on average than the European bass and less skittish.

Hi mate, first of all thanks for your kind words it makes the effort put into edits worthwhile! Here on the South Coast we do have very strong currents which vary with the moon phase of course, and bass are plentiful having been given a lot of protection from fishing over the past decade or so. There are plenty of places to get in from the shore here you don't need a boat to catch great fish, in particular the large bass are close inshore in summer in about 5-6 meters of water in the kelp 👌 Feel free to message me on instagram if you need any advice when you come over 👍

Love your vids mate but as a bass Fisherman I've got to say why would you target the bigger bass? They are the breeding stock and are most probably over 15 years old you should leave them be and take a smaller fish 👍personality I would like to see an upper size limit put I place to protect them, I know netting is indiscriminate and kills everything in its path but it would be nice to see people like yourself leave the bigger fish it feels like it's a macho thing to spear the biggest bass you can to show off to your mates. Sorry for the rant as I say I like watching your vids but I don't enjoy seeing big bass taken for the table especially when it encourages others to do like wise 👍
@stefpix
@stefpix 3 жыл бұрын
In the USA the striped bass, an equivalent fish, is legal to be harvested in saltwater only between 28 to 35 inches. It makes it difficult to target the correct size, and I passed so many. There are so many smaller ones about 20 inches/ 50 cm that I bet taste better than a very large, older fish. No dinner plate size striped bass, unless if you buy them farmer. The upper size legal limit got in effect in the past 2 years or so to protect the larger fish that have good genes for breeding.

If you have the skills to get close enough and hit a big bass I think it’s fair game, not many people posses the skill or ability so there’s little fear of others copying..... I’ve seen in many videos him pass the opportunity to take many bass big ones too. I don’t think anything joe does is to show off , but merely to demonstrate what is possible down there.
@dangerousbeans8067
@dangerousbeans8067 3 жыл бұрын
@@grantsinclair4840 I agree it takes a lot of skill to get close to a big bass but like I said why shoot them they don't taste as nice as a smaller one and they are the breeding stock,a big female bass will produce hundreds of thousands of eggs compared with a smaller fish and they face enormous pressures from over fishing and poaching so in my opinion the bigger bass should be left alone as breeding fish but this is just an opinion of a middle aged man lol so not worth anything 🤣🤣 and don't get me wrong back in the day when I used to spear fish I would have probably taken the shots to but not now 👍happy hunting and tight lines 🔥🔥

Hi thanks for the comment! I would welcome an upper size limit if it were necessary to be brought in for the bass. I suppose my thoughts have always been it's better to take larger fish that have had many years of breeding and a good life. With any species if you have a large minimum landing size you guarantee a proportion of individuals are breeding always and that's the best way to be sustainable I was told by a marine biologist. I know the bigger ones produce more eggs though but if you kill small individuals they never have a chance to grow big!! I'm going around in circles here now 😂
