Fascinating. My father grafted olive trees back in Greece for many years. Unfortunately we lost many trees back in 2021 when the fires hit northern Evia. Much of what is left is now wild rootstock shoots from some very old trees. I need to pick up from where my father left. Your techniques are very useful sir.
@JSacadura
@JSacadura Жыл бұрын
With older olive trees besides the bark graft you can use the patch graft. I plan to make a video on that technique which gives better results with older trees. But with wild rootstocks with just a few years, bark grafting is fine.

Thanks for including the number of weeks of each time you checked, now I now that if it isn't growing but it is still green it may still be viable. I wanted to ask you if after you know the graft was succesfull you do anything to improve the quality of the "wound", for example if you remove the corner pieces of bark in a bark graft. I usually try to cut out the parts with no sap flow to help the healthy patrs join without obstructions but I'm not sure it is usefull. Thank you again (from Italy)
@JSacadura
@JSacadura Жыл бұрын
Hi, Daniel. Replying to your question - No, I don't cut the corner pieces. The callus growth might not be pretty to watch, in some grafts, but I don't think it affects the plant ability to produce a good healthy joint. Thanks for the comment.

Glad to see another video, I enjoyed it as always. Grafts drying out could well have been a problem on most of my buddings this year. The parafilm split early when the rootstock healed vigorously and thus exposed the very young bud graft to moisture loss and more sunlight. I live in zone 7a so my summer conditions are far from as severe as they are for you, but even so our summer seems to be challenging for young grafts. Cheers
@JSacadura
@JSacadura Жыл бұрын
Try using aluminium foil or a padded envelope to provide an additional protection layer, next time. They help protecting from intense sun and keeping the graft's moisture. Parafilm can cause a greenhouse effect on its own. Thanks for the comment.

Hi Superbes videos. I have experimented a few of tour techniques. My best success are : - cherry - peers - plum - apricots My failures, apart from those in the first days/weeks, occur 5 to 8 weeks later, when the grafts were growing well. The buds and shoots seem to have been eaten. Is it possible that slugs come and eat them (or bullfinches)? Tell me. Best regards.

What is the best grafting method for olive on your opinion if we have young seedling as rootstock? And could it possible to graft such small rootstock in summer by chip-budding? Is it important to leave a piece of wood under the bark with the bud or is better without such piece of wood?
@JSacadura
@JSacadura Жыл бұрын
With thinner young seedlings the best method is bud grafting. You can graft the bud with or without a thin layer of wood with similar results /the bark has to be slipping very well to remove a bud without wood and be able to preserve it - the bark might come out without the bud - with the bark towards the sun you will see a clear spot where the bud was). If it has a thin piece of wood technically it's chip-budding. It's usually done in the spring/early summer, but it depends on local temperature and humidity.

Q- Very interesting information! I also have an olive tree in a pot, so I take it outside during the warm season. Is it possible to plant it in the garden? At what negative temperatures can it survive? Thank you! Answer - Olive trees are very resilient and can withstand negative temperatures (-10 to -15ºC). They even regrow from cold damage. You might have to protect it while its young.

@@JSacadura
@JSacadura
@JSacadura Жыл бұрын
Nu sunt sigur că înțeleg întrebarea. Dacă ați cumpărat un măslin dintr-un soi productiv, nu este necesar să-l altoiți. Doar dacă este un măslin „sălbatic” care produce măsline de proastă calitate. ____________________ I'm not sure I understand the question. If you bought an olive tree from a productive variety, it is not necessary to graft it. Only if it is a "wild" olive tree that produces poor quality olives.

I assume you expect a full size tree to develop on the wild self seeded rootstock, or could it surprise you and have different characteristics? Would a wild rootstock of this kind normally be more disease resistant?
@JSacadura
@JSacadura Жыл бұрын
Yes, I expect a full size tree with the same characteristics as the grafted cultivar. The rootstock can provide some adaptability, like resistance to drought, to some soil diseases or growth capability in less than ideal soil, but the cultivar will have all the remaining characteristics (like susceptibility to fungus or insects).

Sir, I followed all your grafting methods. I got a 90% success rate.. I cover the whole scion with grafting tape when the scion starts growing new leaves, then I remove the tape from the scion to let the leaves grow. But I didn't remove tape from the grafting spot, but after removing tape from the scion exposing it to the sunlight, the newly grown leaves started coming brown color. Why is so please answer?

I don't have experience with mango scions (can't grow mango over here without a greenhouse). Nevertheless, If you wrap the scions in plastic film you can store them in the refrigerator vegetable drawer for a couple of weeks, at least. With dormant scions I have stored them for a couple of months and they were still viable to graft.

With the high temperatures they just can't sustain the inner moisture as they still don't have established a connection with the vascular tissues of the rootstock.

Side shoots are a pain in the butt. You can have a well-developed graft that looks fine and you let it be for a couple of months, and when you come back the side shoots take over and kill the graft. In Olives and Pomegranates when changing variety we leave one branch of the original cultivar just so we can graft and not have endless side shoots popping under the graft.
@JSacadura
@JSacadura Жыл бұрын
Yes, you're right. I usually leave one branch of the original rootstock to avoid this problem, like you can see on several examples of my previous video. However, this time, I wanted to graft a bit lower, so there where none that I could preserve easily. On older olive trees with several branches its easier to do it. Thanks for the comment.
