My 18th Century Wedding | Dress Reveal & Try On |

I designed this wedding dress after being inspired by an original gown dated to 1780. The French fashion house fashion house Atelier Saint-Honore then created it for me and did an outstanding job! It's all hand embroidered with flowers inspired by 18th century embroidery designs. Alas, the dress arrived too small and has caused much worry over the last few months. My best friend Anna surprised me by making me a stomacher to expand the dress. We are going to try it on for the first time & see if the dress can be saved!

MAJORLY IMPORTANT ADVICE…as someone who comes from a family of many photographers and wedding photographers…don’t forget to keep your bouquet VERY LOW when entering the ceremony and for your formal photos. I mean uncomfortably low! It feels natural to put that bouquet high, but all your photos and video will have your face and a big bouquet under your chin if you don’t …and no photos of that STUNNING bodice!! Yep. You basically hold it over your nether-regions. Our photographer told us the same thing. It feels unnatural while you're holding it, but looks natural in the photos.

Now that you've explained it, I can picture it (in my mind) and it would look much more lovely and give the photographer more access to the detail in the dress. It would look more feminine and organic instead of holding it up under the chin/covering the breast area.. I have actually seen pictures where it's held like this and it just doesn't look comfortable or natural. It also takes away from the dress and too much focus on the boutique rather than the dress and couple itself imo. Thank you for the lovely ideas for Justine and perhaps others who are thinking of and/or planning their wedding ideas. 😊❤

The night before my friend’s wedding she realised that her veil was too white for the dress. We all panicked, nobody knew what to do. Her grandmother was watching all this very calmly then took the veil into the kitchen. She then poured the teapot into a pan & dunked the veil in the tea 😂 We all looked on in horror but it worked like a charm ❤

Yes 1700's. Movie Last of the Mohicans was set in 1757. Madeline Stowe is like looking at my grandmother. Same age. Same wealth. Even look very much alike. I have a pic of her portrait. Madeline w/o makeup. It's quite astounding. Family history says a family member or family idk, but they were tomahawked by Indians. It would have been my grandmothers relations not her immediate ... as far as I know. The movie has a personal effect on me. I should mention my grandmother was French and 1757 was during the French Indian War.

@huskymom234 the 18th century was the 1700s and wedding dresses and veils did not exist, women women wore their best clothes and bonnet Queen Victoria introduced the wedding dress and veil in 1840 so its not an 18th century wedding dress

As someone who sews, I'm truly amazed and in awe of the dressmakers from that period in time. Not just the embroidery but can you imagine stitching dresses like this by hand? The secret is if you dont say its wrong then noone will know thats not how its supposed to be!! It looks stunning with the stomacher!!! I had a Jane Austen era looking dress. Empire waisted, tea cup sleeves, chiffon. I’d choose it again it was so elegant and feminine. It was not the style when I got married 20 years ago but I loved it and still do. It’s so fantastic you can choose a dress that fits YOU and isn’t just going along with the trends. That’s a special thing.

I just watched you try on your wedding dress, Justine....and again....absolutely stunning! That description doesn't even do it justice. It's nice to have your best friend there helping you...that makes it even more special! The 3 weeks will fly by....but it looks like you will be ready. BUT....I thought I was, and I was so nervous during the ceremony that you could see my dress actually shaking!! We got married on October 10, 1981, and are still going strong. My prayers are for you and Ron for a long and happy married life!!!!

All through the dress fittings it was perfect, Mom and I made my dress. Then on the day it was a disaster in one week I had dropped 2 dress sizes and my beautiful fitted dress was miles too big for me. We had already taken it in twice in the past month, when Mom took it in twice we left the seams intact just in case I put the weight back on before the day, that way it would still be wearable, Mom had to stitch me into my dress if it had not been for the vail everyone would have seen the back of my dress with a makeshift corset tied affect just as well I bought button thread to sew on the lace flowers on my vail. I had the flu for the past 4 weeks and there was no way I was putting off my wedding day come hell or high water 😹😹

Just a suggestion : Put hooks & eyes on the top of the stomacher so that you can use the “hook & eye” part to correspond to the match on the bodice to close the top part. Put the stomacher in behind the lacing and behind the two sides of the bodice and then hook in at the top. It’ll save time getting in and out of the dress, while also preventing being stuck by pins, having multiple layers pinned together so you can. Tuck your fichu down where you like it. I’ve got to say that this is one of the most *gorgeous* wedding dresses I’ve seen in a long time. Especially for a 18th century recreation! Have a lovely wedding and an even better marriage. ❤

My grandmother, Mattie was born in 1900. Her mother, Rachel, became a widow in 1901 and she raised Mattie and her two brothers, Alvin and Benjamin with her sewing skills. Grandma said that her blouse was straight pinned to her skirt. Mattie passed in 1997. I miss her everyday.
