Shelley, I just have to tell you...I have grown up in classrooms since my mom was an elementary teacher. I have a history of teachers behind me but I've been discouraged to become a teacher because of present day society. I am afraid of the parents who neglect to help their children, administration who wouldn't support me as well as a plethora of other valid concerns. I looked into dozens of other jobs and after years of feeling lost, I am going back to school to become a teacher. You have truly inspired me and I have truly looked up to you through each vlog you upload. I know this isn't an easy career but I think I can make a difference. Thank you for giving me confidence that I CAN do this and be good at it too. Congratulations on baby boy #2 ♡

I used to want allllll the bins but with Covid this past year I was forced to have a rolling cart and absolutely no firniture( we switched classrooms all day instead of students) and I found out that I loved it! No bulletin boards, no nothing except for a few things on my cart. I had a small 3 drawer organizer for paper, pens and electronic stuff, a teacher toolbox for office supplies, and 2 drawers that were deep. I’d put any extra paper in that and the other was for my junk. Doc cam, masks, hole punches, stapler etc. it was literally all on a rolling cart. I gave students notebooks and graded them at desks and called it done. So much reduced paper flow and omg it was the best. I want to keep that cart forever. I still kept crayons markers etc in shoe bins in a corner but otherwise, that was it!

Our teacher journeys are crazy similar. I too am going into my 5th year and I am going to 2nd grade this year. I have pretty much taught a different grade level each year and I am hoping 2nd is my jam. I’m really excited about it. My classroom theme is also the exact same this year. Black with somewhat of a rainbow color scheme, but I also HATE red and use pink instead. I think I’ve commented on a few videos in the past - I would love to hear your comparison of the older grades to younger grades or tips you have for new 2nd grade teachers. I love your videos! For me, I used something to organize papers for the subjects for the week. I used two 12x12 sterilite drawers that were designed for scrapbooking but you could totally use the cart. I had one bin for writing, one for math, one for phonics (I taught first grade), one for assessments, one for interventions, and, one for art. I would put all my paper for the week in friday so it was ready on monday. I liked it because if we didn't get to something I could look at what we still needed to do at my end of week prep. It was easy to clean weekly and I didn't really get overloaded with stacks of papers even though the paper was still there. I would use book binders to group the work for each day. If the students finished early as a class I could pull out the next assignment. If the assignment didn't get finished I would collect the work back up and put a binder clip on the work and put it back in the drawer for the next day.

I teach in Ontario, Canada and when we go on Maternity leave (we can take 12-18 months) we take everything that is ours personally home (or we make sure it somewhere safe in the school) and completely turn over the classroom to the supply teacher. It is theirs for the 12-18 months. I didn’t plan one day of work, I didn’t set up, nothing. I left for my first leave in April and just left my long range plans, then came back at the end of the year and packed and didn’t do any school work for the entire next school year. My second was born in September and I packed up and left in June and didn’t do a thing for that school year either. We are considered on leave and we are responsible for nothing while we are.

I don’t typically work on setting up over the summer, but today was set up day for summer school (which starts on Monday) and we’ve been told we don’t have to pack up after summer school as our rooms are clean already, so I got a decent head start on setting up for the year as well as summer school today and it feels good.
