I've seen Yianni pull in some really extended shots without even a lock around the leg. He has a really long wingspan for his height and is pretty darn strong.

Woodley had great technique but I believe his success at that position was a very long arm reach and incredible strength at that position.

Yeah wrestlers have to dedicate themselves to the weight room, and while long arms help you get to the initial position, anybody can use the S-grip against the sprawl. I’m going to post videos of other wrestlers using it as well

1:50 I think he has really strong lats. Look at this extended position. He is using his pull up muscles to pull on that leg.

I’m in my seventies and was primarily a counter wrestler. Generally wrestlers who shoot, and get extended-both hips and arms reaching,with face down-head on the mat, would often get countered, fail to finish takedown, and get worn down and tired out. But after watching your videos, and remembering videos of Yanni D and Spencer Lee, I can see that they are all able to finish takedowns from what I see as bad positions. I’m sure all these wrestlers and many more would get a takedown on me, even though at one point they were in very bad positions Also I believe this extended position-arms reaching, hips extended, face down-head on mat, and many times belly on mat-is a much worse position in freestyle wrestling than folkstyle. Thank you Earn Your Gold Medal, Sir you are excellent. Are you coaching any teams? Thanks and good luck

Thank you I appreciate that. I coached from 2018-2023 but I took this season off. And surprisingly whenever I see this position in freestyle I don't see the defensive wrestler attempting to get exposure points. Seems like they just be focused on their sprawl. I'm going to post of video of a few guys using this position in freestyle too

@@earnyourgoldI have a request of you.... It's there any chance you could do a series "of how to go out on the back?" Many different descriptions, but it's when the wrestler shooting ends up with his head between the opponent's legs. The opponent generally is reaching over the body grabbing ankles. Ends up in a stalemate most of the time, but some seem to handle that position and score. Trying my best to describe the situation as clearly as possible. I've never seen a person teach any kind of offense from this position & definitely haven't seen what the guys, who do score points, do and technique(s) they use in common.... Let me know if you need me to describe it better... Great stuff!! PS What is or was your wrestling background. Whatever it is. It was extensive. If your not still competing, I hope your coaching. Would have loved to have a coach so solid at fundamentals as you are!!

Great video as always! I've been coming to a similar conclusion lately. While the Gable (Satiev) or hand-on-hand (John Smith) grips may offer more leverage, the s-grip allows me to keep my lock even when my opponent is fully sprawled out. While finishing on the ground may be preferable, the s-grip allows me to maintain my lock when the others would have broken and to build back up to my feet.

Justin Oliver of Central Michigan was also exceptional at this. Oliver had a match against Micah Jordan where he was totally flat and extended belly down and somehow managed to still score on him from that position.

Yes

Yes! I've always been in favor of the inside hand on top, grabbing the wrist of the outside arm on the head inside single, like Woodley does here the majority of the time. I've seen some very high level wrestlers/coaches promote the other way, so I don't think it's a big no-no (and the first example shows Woodley doing this when shooting on the opponent's right leg), but I do think the way Woodley does it most often is superior. Like you said, it allows him to post on the ground more easily. It also feels stronger to me due the angle of force from a sprawl being different on the grabbing hand. I compare it to trying to hang from a horizontal bar vs. hanging from a vertical bar. When I get extended with my outside hand on top, I feel like it's always sliding off into an S-grip.

A small point on defending this take both hands and smath the top of his knees so he cant work up, then sprear an ankle to work your sprawl...none of them did that

When you can finish like this, set-ups aren't nearly as important.
@earnyourgold
@earnyourgold 7 ай бұрын
Exactly man. Imagine the confidence to shoot when you're able to do this. This is end up becoming a crutch (like anything), but it doesn't have to be. AJ Ferrari is also really at this position and he use to still finish the majority of his shots pretty clean. I know that when I was wrestling I started shooting a lot more when I became confident that I could at worst get a stalemate. This is even better
