@@LucasCrossleyGuitar Just finished watching this video - it seems you really do get what you pay for. I was tempted by the EART W2 headless guitar - since it seems quite the bargain compared to a $1600+ Strandberg Boden - but having seen this and looking at the bridge on the EART W2 that requires a tiny wrench to tune... I'm thinking maybe I should just save up.

My 2 cents. I have a NKC3 upgraded to GFS 63 Texas Pro SC and VEH hum pickups. Total ~$407 USD. Does not come close to $1K as mentioned in the video. I compared to a Grosh Retro Classic with Fralins, made in Southern Cal in '96. Mint. Played thru Two-Rock custom reverb prototype + TR 2x12 vertical cab with Eminence Tonespotters. Very high-end setup. Conclusion? Playability is the same. Sound? Grosh slightly more jangly in top-end, but that's because the SC are more vintage while the 63 Texas are vintage and a bit hot, R at ~6-6.5K. Grosh has no humbucker, so didn't compare that. Overall, the guitars are extremely close. Except in price. Like 7X difference. EARTs are excellent guitars for just messing around, hobby for mods, and for gigging when you don't want to bring a > $3K guitar to a gig. Mind boggling how well the guitar plays and sounds. Resale value? Not so much, but you don't get guitars like these for that. You get them to PLAY without breaking your wallet.

05/10/2023: I have the Eart T-380 and it is fantastic, except for one feature. The bullet fret-wire "end" look great, but when you move your hand up/down the neck your first finger bumps the bullet end .... bump, bump, bump ... and it gets painful on the first finger. I took a jewelers file and filed the bullets down, and now they looks and feel just like a high-end fender, etc. Also, the fret board is not rolled, so I rounded it off too. Now, it is prefect for me.

I really appreciate the time you took on this review, especially showing the quality of the fretwork. Everyone seems to rave and say that the frets are perfect. While they clearly are polished well and have nicely rounded ends, the crown / level job obviously reflects the price point.
@LucasCrossleyGuitar2 жыл бұрын
Yeah. In my case I found both guitars turned my fingers black after the first time I played them. I’m guessing they didn’t bother to clean the fingerboard after their final polish. Also, and what’s more troubling, is the model that was advertised as having a roasted maple neck actually doesn’t. You can tell because the color of the wood under the nut slot (where the nut wasn’t glued in) was not the same as the rest of the wood. Roasted maple is the same color all the way through. Pretty misleading of Eart to do that in my opinion.

I just checked the price of the CP-1 direct from Eart and it $ 449.00 to be exact as of today 9/13/22. For this price you could get the Ibanez ESAZ with trem. The Ibanez also uses ceramic magnet pickups (as do many other more expensive models) and they sound good too. I'd take the Ibanez any day because I bet their fretting is great even if not so pretty... As a matter of fact I got one of the first Glarry Strats a couple of years back and worked on it until it had an action as good as my PRS (for me) The pickups and and bridge block still need replacing. I'm about to put Texas Specials on it! I actually acquired it for a laugh but really like the neck shape! Cheers for the review, Pete.

I bought a used Ibanez Talman for 300 dollars. It’s also made in China but much bette quality. When a big brand has their name on the headstock the emphasis on quality control seems to be much better. The company I work for manufactures products all over the world. Facilities in China are subjected to random spot checks for quality because our brand name is at risk should the quality not be what it should be. I doubt Eart has this pressure since it’s their name on the headstock. I’ve also seen some of their guitars specs say roasted maple neck when they actually aren’t. One way to check is to look at the color of the screw holes in the neck. The wood should be the same caramel color all the way through. If it’s not, it’s not roasted!

Thanks for the honest review. A friend and I purchased the Eart W2 headless and there were a few issues. The pickups had too much microphonic squeal, both guitars had one bad fret on the neck (different position for each guitar), and the screws used in the bridge are cheap and could easily strip when trying to make adjustments. Someone below commented on having to use the tiny crank to move the tuners. Fortunately an allen wrench works fine and that's a good thing because EART said that they wanted $8 for one of those tuning cranks. Overall, the guitars are a good value at around $300 each, but you're right about the "handyman's special" description, and looking at other options once you start looking at the higher priced offerings from EART.

The standard pickguard was pretty close, all you have to do is use some wood glue and toothpicks to cover up the 2 or 3 holes that are partially covered, then just drill new holes. Mohagony is a very workable wood, a lot easier than maple, I've worked on both. The hardest part about swapping pickguards would be to cut the notch for the truss rod access on the pickguard...find a fried with a Dremel, or buy a refurbished one on ebay for less them $50. You'd know there are some imperfections under the pickguard, but you won't see it.

Thank you Lucas. I thought that was a very honest review. Based on an actual consumer experience, without biase. I was contemplating this brand for a cheap guitar, just for fun. But after watching your review it reminded me of my painful experience with another renown budget brand Harley Benton. I bought a HB CST-24 in emerald green last year, and had a hard time even replacing a simple thing like a nut as the size is different from most guitar brands. My guess is all these budget brands, in order to avoid law suit from patented owners, had to build their guitars in a slightly different specs. So i total second your suggestions, that if anyone should decide to purchase one of these, they need to know modding or replacing parts can be a huge problem. Just not worth the hussle... I sold my HB CST-24 after 3 months ownership... i will anytime, buy a charvel if i want hard rocking guitar that is well-built and reasonably priced. just my two cents. Kudos to your videos!

"Nitpicking" is important so keep doing it. I want to know about the details, the small flaws. When reviewers say stuff like "This is good for the money" it doesn't tell me anything because what people consider good or passable can differ widely. More information to work with is always better. I can decide for myself if the smaller flaws are a deal breaker or not. :)

Quite right. Honestly, just about every $200-300+ guitar from a major brand is "good for the money." You can buy a $200 Squire or Yamaha and have a solid guitar you can gig with, which is "good for the money" in my book.

Fair evaluation I guess, but what I would like to see is a side by side comparison of this Eart and an equivalent in a big name brand🤔 that would tell us more about what is really bang for your buck😉

Hi Shredphreek (Love that name btw very clever) For me a comparison between an Eart and say a Fender would prove nothing. The Eart is an unknown brand made in China where labor and components are fractions of the cost of a Made In USA Fender. It should ALWAYS be cheaper to buy, because it's cheaper to make. Cheers

@@LucasCrossleyGuitar thanks for the reply, but I meant an equivalent comparison..a Chinese made Fender for example. Folks might get the idea that buying a Chinese made Fender may be the better option..but unless we have a side by side reveal all, we'll never know what is the better value guitar. Straight off the bat, I would almost certainly say the Eart has superior fret work, then we could then look at control cavities..pickups..etc.

I have to admit my first impression was that you were nitpicking an inexpensive guitar, but then you pointed out issues that shouldn't exist at any price range. My feeling after watching is that anyone buying one of these had better hope they get a good one out of the box. Thanks for the detailed review 👍

I think the strings made your fingers black not the frets. Are you running your fingers on the strings on the frets?
@LucasCrossleyGuitar3 жыл бұрын
Hi Bluwg. Thanks for your comment. I've gone through thousands of strings in my life and played lots of new guitars and this has never happened before. I think it's more likely that after polishing the frets Eart didn't do a great job cleaning the neck up. You have to pay a human to clean the neck and that's expensive so they skipped or did a half hearted job. I oiled and cleaned the neck during the first string change and it was pretty dirty. Like I said, I think they just didn't clean it up after.
@thestratman79033 жыл бұрын
@@LucasCrossleyGuitar I had the same experience with having my fingers turn black for the first 2 hrs or so of play....Hopefully it's just a cleanup issue because SS shouldn't do that if they're clean

I think it's a leftover fret residue from the crowning and filing process when they were installed... at least it was one one of mine.

I feel like it is kinda weird how nobody has been able to address these qc issues on other videos. I feel like the platform requires you to specify weather you are sponsored by the company you are reviewing or if the product was borrowed or sent to you free of charge for the purpose of the review weather it is biased or unbiased. I dont think small reviewers would benefit from being dishonest or baised towards a certain product but thats prob me just being naive lol. I figured prob the company just thought to send you a bstock model they had laying around that sounded decent just thinking you would go easy on them if you got an free guitar ahahaha. Ill prob just mod my strat and get one of the sterling jp models. Im curious to try one of these guitars but chances are ill end up returning it. Thanks for the review, great job!
@LucasCrossleyGuitar3 жыл бұрын
Hi Konoha, You're so right. KZbin actually DOES require people to disclose whether the video is sponsored or not. I've seen some HUGE channels that never have this little text in their videos. It's just a little check box that you click when you upload the video. When you watch the video you'll see some white text at the beginning of the video that says "This is a sponsored Video" or something to that effect. In my case, I bought the first guitar and received free shipping. So the sponsorship was really just the shipping fee but if you watch that one you'll see the white text indicating it was sponsored. Even a slight discount is still considered a sponsorship. That first guitar had a bent string tree. A crack in the neck pocket (just the finish) The nut fell on the floor during the first string change because it wasn't properly glued in, the frets were really not level and there was a small finish blemish on the top as well. I contacted Eart and had to complain quite a bit before they finally sorted me out. I thought based on having watched all these glowing reviews that I must have gotten a lemon SO I agreed to pay the difference between the guitar I bought and a model up which is the CP-1 that I am demonstrating here. Maybe they sent me a second on purpose but they never explained that to me if they did. I offered to return the other guitar as well. Because I dealt directly with them I didn't have the same ability to return things as if it was an Amazon purchase for example. Anyhow, with some luck I'll get time to review the other model and I'd like to give that away to pay it forward. To Eart's credit they did try to resolve my issues so I feel I should pay that forward. Hope that makes sense. BTW, sorry for the novel. Cheers!

I have too many guitars and basses to be constantly changing pups. I work around with a Seymour Duncan Signal Booster pedal, a Boss GE-7 EQ pedal, the guitar and tube amp tone controls, controls on pedals used, etc. I could make this guitar work well enough stock. Shielding is easy enough and noise gates help too. People spend way too much dough unnecessarily on pups IMHO.

Hi Lucas, I'm a piano player dabbling in guitar, have never owned anything of quality. Thanks, great review. I appreciate your knowledge and and suggestions to help the performance. It solidifies my decision of buying this guitar. It does seem to me that you're looking for $1000 quality in a $400 guitar? Is that fair? For me it seems like tremendous quality for the price. I do of course totally agree about flaws and will be looking very closely when mine arrives, thanks to you. But what a wealth of information you are, will be watching to educate myself.

Hi David. Thanks for the kind words. I may have missed the mark but I have found other reviewers saying this guitar is worth more than what they charge and competes with guitars worth thousands. I disagree completely. While it’s a decent guitar quality control seems a bit hit or miss. We need to bear in mind that these guitars are manufactured in China where all the costs (especially the most significant cost, labor) is much lower so it should be a less expensive guitar. Thanks again for sharing. Cheers !

Hi Aleksander. I think this one is yes. I looked inside the holes on the heel of the neck when I removed it and they are the same color all the way through. As far as I know it is baked but I haven’t had a lot of experiences with baked maple. Generally, the way I understand it is that it should be the same color all the way through. Hope that helps. Maybe you mentioned this and I missed it, but some frets that are just a little high like the ones on this guitar can be remedied with a few taps of a deadblow hammer. Four or five taps should do it, but if not, don't keep pounding away on them. These aren't really that bad, so one can either live with them or file them correctly. If one doesn't know how to file frets to level there must be a million videos on how to go about it...or just pay your repair guy to do them. Regarding those locating pins on the fretboard, no, I've never seen two so close together in 57 years of playing and working on my own guitars.
