I not only build guitars but I also collect them. I love Strats and Teles. One of my favorite things to do is rescue broken or abused guitars. Once you take a guitar apart, fix it and put it back together it becomes truly yours and a connection is made.
Recently, I have been casually scrolling through the Seattle Goodwill eBay store. Goodwill is like a thrift store here in the States. Seattle has quite a few musicians and many instruments make it to the Goodwill. The store always has nice old instruments, a lot of off-brand stuff, and occasionally an inexpensive rare gem.
When I saw this on eBay, I knew no one would want it. I knew it could be brought back to life. I was even prepared to unglue the fretboard and replace the truss rod if it was seized up. Thankfully it wasn’t.
I choose to keep everything original. I didn’t even replace the plastic nut or the ceramic pickups. The only thing I added was a few missing screws and an extra tremolo spring. Other than that, it’s an all original 2004 Standard Series Strat.
This vid is about 13 minutes of me just cleaning set to some slow, ambient, chill-wave. Sit back watch me clean and then stay for the improvised demo at the end.
Take it easy.

The funny thing to me is that whoever neglected this guitar apparently never wiped it down, but the "CE" sticker that comes on the neck plate out of the box was never removed. I mean, the first thing I do to a new guitar is peel off all the stickers.

@@irishRocker1 Indeed. I’m restoring a 2008 PRS Core Mira which it’s former owner decided to relic. Do you believe that? The Mira was only introduced in 2007. I bought it from him for $1000, which is very cheap for a PRS here in Australia. He stripped it and used cheap cans of metallic spray paint to paint it a shocking blue, but he did no prep, so it’s a real mess. He put in horrid Asian pots, put on 10c amp knobs, replaced the pickups, and who knows what else. I wish I could send you some photos, it looks really bad, but it still plays and sounds great. I find a sad case every couple of years, restore it, play it, and, eventually, sell it.

These are fun projects to work on. I got a squire from a friend who left it in their house during Katrina and when it flooded it got the guitar too. All the hardware was toast and his son actually put it in the trash pile. He knew I played so he pulled it out and brought it to me to see if I wanted to try to salvage it. Stripped it down to bare wood, replaced everything (except actual frets), and put in some decent Bare Knuckle pickups (Sinner Set) and I'm so happy. Was a blast to take it from a total waste and turn it into one of my favorites. Total cost ended up around 300-400$ but still; it's very much worth the $ and the experience was frustrating and fun.

Man for a 2004 strat, I have no idea how it got that grubby. The wear and scuffs etc, sure, but the amount of corrosion and the level of grime and dirt makes it look like a barn caster. Never knew they drilled out weight relief in the lower horn section on these. That plastic aged real nicely though.
@nate2629
@nate2629 2 жыл бұрын
Are you talking about the 3 circular cut-outs when you say “weight relief” because they’re actually for proper alignement on the CNC in Mexico. Alder bodies already weigh next to nothing & the tiny holes wouldn’t provide relief anyway.
@messybedroom

@@nate2629 yes that’s what I was referring to. But yes that makes sense as anchors for CNC. I’ve only seen things like that on Les Pauls so I assumed maybe the same here. Neither of my strat bodies have those so it was new to me.

I loved your rescue and restoration of the Grungecaster that the cat drugged in! I did something similar to a filthy old Stratocaster some 52 years ago, which the store selling it, wouldn't even put in their locked-glass-doors cabinet with their Gibsons, Gretschs, & Guilds! They just leaned the upright Strat in a corner. But once I cleaned it up, it had a ton of character, and then everybody liked it. I found your video very relaxing, as it reminded me of my Strat rescue!

My jazz bass is like this due to not giving a fuck - I don't care about the look as long as it sounds good. Partially down to slobbery too I'll admit but I don't care about the odd dink here and there when I drunkenly knock it over or whatever, and if I OCD cared about its appearance it would upset me if I knocked it or got it dirty. Each to their own I guess

I did the same thing for an even filthier (but only filthy for a year) 2006 American Strat (Production year: 2006 or early 2007, Made in Corona, USA) a couple of months ago, same color as this one but with SSS config. I used 'Goo Gone' to soak all the metal parts (just for a few hrs), and a 50/50 of water & CLR for the removable plastics. The fretboard was as dry as a popcorn fart, so I put two treatments of '65 on it. Put a new Graphtech XL nut on it, fresh 10-46's, good as new - there was barely a scratch on it, it looked like it was a few months old. I'd do this stuff for free, it's so rewarding. Oh, and thank you for not saying "smash that like/subscribe button". That made me like/subscribe.

Enjoyed this video very much, loved the detailed application involved to disassemble, store parts, clean, clean, and clean this awesome instrument! Such patience, discipline, and knowledge went into the process. Of course, listening to the final product showed the well worth time and effort placed into this tremendous project! Thank you for posting.

Man, I like assembling my guitar: buying pickups and hardware thinking about it and choosing ones and knowing why I did is very pleasant to me. God bless you!

I feel the same way about neglected abused instruments especially guitars. They should be enjoyed, bring joy and add value to life. A holes like Townsend smashing vintage SG's to make up for a lack of talent is a disgrace. Thanks for saving this one good job.

Howdy Mark! I have been through quite a bit of gear in life, and when I set a guitar 'free' upon the world again, I can say with great honesty that it leaves me BETTER than when I purchased it! Kudos for sharing how it's done 👍!

I have a 2003 Mexican Stratocaster that I bought new in 2004. A big problem with a lot of the earlier guitars from that factory, (mine included), is that they did NOT center the bridges. Mine is off by roughly 1/8"~ favoring the bass-side of the neck with a little too much "space" on the treble side. If you can get used to playing back-and-forth between a Fender neck scale and a Gibson neck scale, such a difference shouldn't be a big deal but still - there's a reason you pay more for some Strats than you do for others. I could've pulled the bridge, filled the holes, re-drilled the position holes, and re-mounted the bridge but at the end of the day, unless you're spending a fortune on your instrument to make it perfect, you have to just play that sucker and know your music theory. Thumbs up for this restoration! Good stuff!

Hi Mark, thats me, because I also buy Altoids first of all because of the nice tin-boxes. And second: I also love to give old Instruments a new life. Its very satisfying to make them play again and keep the patina of a well worn instrument. Very well done!

Years ago, I was dating this girl and her sister gave me a strat they’d had sitting in their shed for years. Some dude they knew left it there and he probably wasn’t coming back for it. So I stayed up all night cleaning this thing, peeling off the trashy stickers and replacing missing parts. The stupid bastard who had it before me filled the hole for the trem bar with resin or something, so it was completely useless. After I had it for a week and got this thing back to playable condition, the original owner needed it back. Never got a thank you for all that hard work and if he didn’t throw it out, it’s probably sitting in somebody else’s shed.
