I actually know why EDF 6 requires Epic login They're using Epic Online Services, which normally doesn't require an Epic login since it's just a networking backend (tons of games use it that don't require a login, more than you'd think). It DOES require a login if you want to enable crossplay between Steam and Epic though, if you're going to be offering it on both storefronts in order to keep the networking between the two straight That might seem weird because it's not available on the EGS in the US region, but it IS on the EGS as part of a promotional deal in the JPN region (remember that EDF sells like fucking crazy in JPN). Because of the way the magic pixies fly through the tubes, and with cross-regional connectivity baked into the game, they couldn't just rip out the login requirements for the EN port, and instead opted to make it mandatory so that JPN players on the Epic store could play with EN players on Steam Hopefully ripping out the EGS requirements for EN players comes sooner than later

So basically they just made a convenience decision since it's a bitch to integrate crossplay into a game without it natively, so they just went with a troublesome thing that would at least fix that problem so they had an easier one to deal with. People just in general hate Epic. Not helped by the fact the last time a game required an account from something no one on Steam was using cause said game to die out (cough cough, Helldivers 2).

About the EGS stuff: Apparently EGS bragged about Sandlot as a showcase of how a company can implement it all within just a month from release. It was a last minute bribe with the devil and knowing Sandlot/ignorant Japanese game devs they probably just assumed it would just mean more people got to play the game. After a few hours of the backlash they came out and stated they would undo the requirement for EGS-- And that they don't know how yet.

Gameplay-wise, yes, that's what you're doing. You go back to the beginning of the game with better weapons and armor and fight harder aliens. EDF 6 is the first game to directly address it in canon.

It's a damn shame that the whole thing with EGS has soured the game for a lot of people, because EDF6 is easily the best game in the series (at least, it's a massive improvement from 5, which was my first game in the series). The weapon variety is plentiful, there's 140+ missions (yes, most of them are retreads of EDF5, but they do make an effort to make them unique with varied enemy spawns, new voice lines, and completely new story events), and all of the classes have seen reworks to make them more fun to play (Wing Diver, my favorite from 5, now has additional utility weapons that vastly improve her combat potential while also making it easier to balance energy drain. She's way more fun to play now). My only disappointment is that they didn't add a spectator cam for dead players, or an "expected enemies" list for missions to make it easier to know what a mission will contain. Granted, the second issue is somewhat mitigated thanks to the mission descriptions giving a clearer idea of what kind of enemies might show up in an upcoming mission, but it still leaves some room for trial and error when it comes to optimal loadouts.
