Astronomy is one of the fields that you will find your kid asking lots of questions about, don't they live on earth and want to know more about it? That's exactly what this video is all about, it is about some earth facts for kids.
Did you know that the earth is the third planet from the sun? The position of our earth planet comes in the middle, just between the planet Venus and the planet Mars.
While earth orbits around the sun, it turns on its axis rotating right round in 24 hours. The side of earth that is facing the sun at this point has day time, which of course means that the other side of earth that is not facing the sun has the night time of the day.
As the earth orbits around the sun, it tilts very slightly and this is actually the reason behind receiving the four different seasons of the year which we go through; summer, autumn, winter and spring. When the sun has tilted so that the northern half is a little bit away from the sun, its the northern hemisphere which means that half of the earth's sphere has winter.
Even though the earth is the third planet away from the sun, it is actually not as close as people start thinking, it is actually 93 million miles or 150 million kilometers away from the sun.
The earth has a molten inner core that is made of iron and other metals. Under the earth's crust there are plates that slowly move against each other, these are actually the reason behind the mountains, hill, volcanoes ( • Volcano Facts and Caus... ) and even earthquakes ( • Earthquake Facts for K... ).
There are some reasons why our luck brought us to live on earth, one of them is being considered a very clever planet that its atmosphere protects the planet from meteors, they usually burn up before they reach the earth's surface.
There are some interesting facts related to this planet earth and which are related to the continents found on it, it used to be one large continent millions of years ago and it was actually called "Pangea" but it began to break apart and separate 200 million years ago, and that's basically how our continents have been formed eventually.
One of the interesting things to mention when it comes to the facts about the earth is that it is not actually round as we believe it is, but is more of a sphere shape and the reason behind this goes back to the gravitational pull.
Going deeper into the other details related to the earth, we have to mention that Antarctica has about 70% of the water that is found in the world and it also has 90% of the earth's ice.
Coming to the last fact related to earth which the kids are supposed to know about, we should mention that the earth's longest mountain range is actually under water and it is called the Atlantic Mid Ocean Ridge System that stretches about 50,000 miles (80,000 kilometers) and its nearly 20 times longer than the Andes Mountains above ground.
