Earth Talk: Protecting British Mammals

In this Earth Talk at Schumacher College, Jordi Casamitjana explains how foxes, deer, hares and badgers are still persecuted in the UK and how IFAW’s team is trying to protect them.
IFAW is an international animal protection organisation with 15 offices around the world and projects in more than 40 countries. In addition to global campaigns on issues such as whaling, tiger protection, seal hunting, wildlife trade, elephants and emergency relief, IFAW’s regional offices also develop their own campaigns on local issues. IFAW’s office in the UK has been focusing on the protection of British mammals which sadly are still persecuted, and this led to two of its current campaigns: the protection of hunted mammals by ensuring that the hunting ban remains in place and is properly enforced, and the protection of badgers in England which currently have been the victims of a UK Government cull.
Jordi Casamitjanajordi
Jordi Casamitjana is IFAW’s Campaigns and Enforcement Manager in the UK office currently working mainly on domestic issues, such as the hunting with dogs campaign, and the badger cull. He manages the team of Wildlife Crime Investigators that go out monitoring UK hunts to gather evidence of illegal activity.
Originally from Catalonia (Spain), but resident in the UK for several decades, Jordi joined IFAW in mid-2012, after some years of being a freelance animal protection consultant. Jordi has a background in Zoology, in particular animal behaviour, and for over 20 years has been involved in different aspects of animal protection, working as scientific researcher, undercover investigator, animal welfare consultant and animal protection campaigner, both freelance and for well-established animal advocacy organisations in different countries. His most notable work has been his involvement with the first successful prosecutions under the Hunting Act 2004 (when working for the League against Cruel Sports), and his participation in the campaign that led to the ban on bullfighting in Catalonia.
