When I realized I had to sit under that waterfall for a amount of time that is not mentioned ANYWHERE in the game by anyone and no hints or tips or anything is given to you. It was a ridiculous amount of time too like 20 mins or something while doing nothing. After hours of trying to talk to everyone thinking i missed something I stood in front of that waterfall and let the game run while i made a sandwhich and came back and it was open........ holy crap that was infuriating and mysterious at the same time, it took my 15 years to find out what really happened.

I don't know what it is about the music called "Paula's Theme" or "Easter" from Mother , it's just soo haunting and it gets me every time I play. Also the unique way of defeating Giygas.

The most memorable aspect is the personality. The way it builds emotions is undoubtedly the best thing about the game

Being 10 years old. Getting to the final battle, exhausting every option, using every item, dying over and over...then in a final act of desperation and frustration using the " pray " ability only to discover this was the key. Amazing memories. Great review, man!

@@Xygor Weird, indeed, I never used the pray ability due to being cursed with a bad status effect every time I used it. It was a huge surprise to me when it ended up being pivotal to defeating the final boss.

This is a game I like so much I spent a lot of time looking for something comparable. I think Secret of Evermore is close in terms of a unique personality but it's not as fun to play. In the end, I conceded that there is no other game like it so I just keep replaying it and I haven't tired of it yet.

My favorite part of Earthbound is the Saturn Coffee drink. Something that would normally just be a "full restore" effect turned into a psychodelic trip about destiny, and more imporantly, determination, which was something you needed to complete the game. While I agree that players familiar with the game will probably have a breezy playthrough, this is a game that will destroy certain players. It certainly derailed me as a kid! This is a game I had to come back to in my 20s to beat, but it only made me appreciate it more. A truly unique game in a genre that has become pretty heavily saturated since then. One of those games I beat once a year now. Good stuff!

I seriously regret never getting this game as a kid. I blame it mainly on how it was marketed.
@locke1034 жыл бұрын
that gross out humor was prevalent for the age. we had stuff like ren & stimpy, boogerman, earthworm jim... however flawed the marketing campaign was, that wasnt strictly its biggest fault.

@@TheBadGuy235 same here, i was just too much of a greenhorn regarding the genre back then. while i'll admit that FF7 was my first FF game, FF6 was the first to catch my attention even vaguely. as children, it was one of my fiancee's favorite games. as such, she would gush about it despite my knowing jack all about it. by the time i could play it, i certainly grew an appreciation for it. hence the username locke i have.

This game brought me a strange pseudo-comfort, in a time where other RPGs were about medieval strife. Nothing quite like Earthbound.
@Gamerextra10292 жыл бұрын
Mother 2's strong points were its contemporary setting (when every RPG was either medieval fantasy or sci-fi) and sense of humor. That being said, it's still mostly a Dragon Quest clone, so I don't know if I'd call it the most original RPG ever. That title should be reserved for games that actually took risks, like Ogre Battle, Suikoden or Valkyrie Profile. This game gets MAJOR brownie points for its top notch localization, though. The team that brought us the English version did a work of art.

Earthbound (still) has some of my favorite video game moments. The final boss fight against Giygas. The entire fight beginning to end and the music/sound effects scared me pretty bad when I was a kid. I also loved the part when Ness goes to Magicant - a realm of his inner consciousness. Within Magicant was the Sea of Eden which is the dark and violent part of his personality. It’s something we all have. You have a boss fight against “Ness’s Nightmare” who tells you before the fight that you can’t win because your consciousness willed it into being. You literally have to fight and kill your inner demons. It was a beautiful moment and then Ness becomes super powerful leveling up a ton of times once you win
