I was 12 when "Earthquake" was first released. We went early to get good seats, early enough that the previous showing was still running. We waited in the lobby, which had globe lights hanging from the very high ceiling. The last tremor of the film hit, and I will never forget seeing those globes sway dangerously overhead. I knew we were in for a great time, and sure wasn't disappointed!

I worked at Universal Studios sound dept for 24 years starting in 1980. After a failed attempt to expand Sensurround to Sensurround plus with the movie Zoot Suite. Some of us got to obtain some of the speakers. I had four of the one's they put in the rear corners of the theater, stacked 2 high. They were about 20" X4'X4'. I since built smaller cabinets for 2 of them using the CV 18 drivers the were specifically built for that use. Still love them today, along with a SVS unit & a Buttkicker. The sound that played from them was not part of any movie per-sey. But was generated buy a special Earthquake generator box that traveled with the speakers, wire , amps & such to each theater that was showing that movie. There were many instances where nets had to be installed on the ceilings of theaters because the plaster was getting knocked off by the low freqs.

I'm curious if the generator was pink noise filtered, or what they call Red noise? Very deep random frequencies, or was it a pre-recorded sound of some kind?

Per Wikipedia "Sensurround is the brand name for a process developed by Cerwin-Vega in conjunction with Universal Studios to enhance the audio experience during film screenings, specifically for the 1974 film Earthquake. The process was intended for subsequent use and was adopted for four more films, Midway (1976), Rollercoaster (1977), the theatrical version of Saga of a Star World (1978), the Battlestar Galactica pilot, as well as the compilation film Mission Galactica: The Cylon Attack (1979)."

I don't know about American cinemas, but in the UK the drivers were 25 inch RTR (Italian), 600 watts RMS, 8 ohm speakers with 6" voice-coils. 4 driver units were built into the tops of each of the 4 bass bins, which were about 6ft high and about 5ft wide on each side, painted black. The 4 bass bins in the Empire, Leicester Square, London, were hooked up with 7Kw RMS amplification being used to create the 'Earthquake' sound pressure waves. The film track 'Sensurround' subsonic effect was a mixed 15 and 25 Hz inter-modulated signal, to set up interference effects with the two sound waves fighting each other, which produced several simultaneous harmonics within the cinema auditorium at around 115 db. Outside, while waiting in a 100 yard queue to see the film, we could feel what seemed like an underground train passing beneath our feet, every so often. In the auditorium, when I eventually got in, women screamed when the 'Sensurround' came on during the film, which made all the rows of seats visibly vibrate in waves, like a bass guitar string. I later saw one of the 25 inch RTR re-coned drivers in Wembley Loudspeakers, Shepherd's Bush, and it was a monster - with cooling fins on the magnet assembly like a 500cc single, motorcycle cylinder head. I could have bought it for £100 but didn't have the money in 1976.

When Earthquake in sensurround came to Hollywood, CA in 1974, I absolutely BUGGED/NAGGED my mom to death to go see it. My whole family were from the Northeastern USA, so quakes are very rare over there. Mom, sister, grandma, and I moved to Calif. in the '60's. Then came the 6.4 Sylmar/San Fernando quake on 02-09-1971, MY VERY FIRST EARTHQUAKE! Ever since then I have been obsessed with earthquakes. So in 1974, Mom drove me to the Cinerama Dome Theater in Hollywood, CA to see the flick, (which was SET in Hollywood). So here we were, in Hollywood, seeing all the tall buildings outside. We go see the movie INSIDE the theater, and see Hollywood get totally demolished. THEN after the movie, we walk outside, and Hollywood is all built up again. I was 10 years old at the time, so my young mind was thinking, "GEE, HOW DID THEY BUILD EVERYTHING BACK UP SO FAST ?" Hehehehehehe :D

I remember "In Sensurround" it was like a big deal, especially for a kid, I was 9 when to see it, what I remember most was the stunt driver on the motorcycle, he was wearing black and yellow leathers, and he had this course like a roller coaster for a motorcycle. At the time it seemed like all movies from then on would be "IN SENSURROUND" echo echo.....but I read somewhere that only like two or three films came out in that format, too expensive to keep it up I guess. Still it's great fun to revisit it now as an adult, and the word sensurround sounds cool even today.

The original Sensurroud used Fully Horn loaded bass bins made by Cerwin Vega. The direct radiators used here will in no way recreate the impact created by the Cerwin Vegas. If they did not have access to Cerwin Vegas they could have also used the Fully horn loaded Subs that are used in HPS-4000 sound system to fully recreate the original Sensurround sound.

Those horns were big enuf for me as a kid to be able to walk into. The bins were laid across the front of the stage end to end (my guess would be at least sixty feet across). Then they had bins in the balcony against the back wall and in the rear of the orchestra stacked high from floor to about 14 ft high. I sat in the front row and it was like a train was rolling over you. And as Fred Hall said, the rumble was so loud, the sound pressure so high that you couldn't talk. In fact, the rumble made the screen speaker audio, dialogue especially, sound like it was fluttering as if being played thru a big fan. I can also say, the first, original Sensurround film, EARTHQUAKE, used an outboard rumble generator that created random low-frequency rubble. The rest of the releases were different -- ROLLERCOASTER and MIDWAY -- tried to created the effect by keeping the sound on the soundtrack and it wasn't nearly as effective as EARTHQUAKE. I saw MIDWAY in two different theatres and both had significant alignment problems that allowed low frequencies in the soundtrack to be seen by the processor as Sensurround sounds and they would explode through the CV bins. Whenever actors would say the "B" or "P" sound, they would sound like dynamite blasts -- it was very funny. There also was a film BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (1978) that was released around the same time as ROLLERCOASTER (1977) and, at least in a theatre here in Brooklyn, was advertised as In Sensurround. I guess the amps and CV subs were still in place in the theatre from the previous Sensurround films had just played it using the same soundtrack low-frequency triggering concept that Universal switched to for MIDWAY and ROLLERCOASTER, exploding "Ps" and "Bs" included, and the theatre management probably figured, just turn the Sensurround system on for this film as well. Actually, the low-frequency amplitude sensing thing would work for any film so what's the harm, other than it yes, it did sound intense, but lame. BTW, IMDB in the technical specs does NOT show BATTLESTAR GALACTICA as being a Sensurround release. It is a Universal picture so I guess Universal so they owned Sensurround trademark so I guess who cares if they just tacked it on any of their films that they choose and get away with it. Bottom line, NOTHING since has ever matched the original, internal organ vibrating EARTHQUAKE experience.

Having grown up in North Hollywood, I would take friends on a pre-Earthquake tour. We would head up into the Hollywood Hlls and I would say "What do you see?". They would say a row of houses on stilts. Further down in the hills, I'd stop and say now?. Lake Hollywood. Come down from the hills and head up this canyon, and now? That's the base the Mulholland Dam. Come out of the canyon, get on the Hollywood Freeway, get off at Vine, and now? Oh, that's the Capitol Records Building. Down one block, turn right and then see Earthquake at the Chinese Theater (they used 18 inch Cerwin Vega speakers). When they first tested Sensurround at full power, little particles showered down from the ornate ceiling. They ended putting a fine mesh net over the entire auditorium. This was the first thing you saw when you walked in. Interesting to note, back in 1933, we had the Long Beach quake. Three years later, the movie San Francisco. In 1971 we had the Sylmar quake. Three years later, the movie Earthquake.

They went thru all that trouble to outfit the theatre with Sensurround as a Cinema Event as was experienced originally in 1974, but couldn't spring for what every theatre back then had....CURTAIN to cover the screen? For shame. And not for nuthin as we say in Brooklyn, of all 5 feature films, only EARTHQUAKE had REAL Sensurround, i.e., the external, random low-frequency rumble generator. The others used a totally different system, putting the low frequency sounds on the film itself with a level sensing device that would send the audio thru the Sensurround amps and speakers. Problem was, it was VERY level sensitive and any misalignment at all and low frequency sounds that WEREN'T supposed to come out of the massive speakers would, so things like dialog with percussive sounds like Ps and Bs would trigger the Sensurround causing thunderous sounds with actors' words. The BEST example of Sensurround was the original EARTHQUAKE feature; all the others paled in comparison.

Yes, Sensurround Mark I was the best, technically speaking (no pun intended!). I have the original soundtrack album on vinyl, and it has a track on side 2 that is designed to simulate the rumble effects. The response goes all the way down to 15 Hz and the grooves in the record had to be spaced very far apart for those few seconds. It'll give the best cartridge, amp, and speakers quite a workout. On the issue of curtains, I heartily agree. When I used to go to Eric theaters in the Philadelphia area in the 70's they would open the curtains to show previews, then close the curtains for a full minute, dim the house lights and open them again for the feature film.

Interesting film about the process. Too bad it didn't use John Williams's score from the film, instead of Alfred Newman's score from AIRPORT (although I mean no offense toward Alfred Newman's great score for AIRPORT).I saw this film at the United Artists Theatre in Chicago when it came out. I arrived early and was hanging out in the lobby until the next show began. Please note that this was an old theatre with old-time lighting sconces on the lobby walls, etc. Well, while waiting in the lobby, one of the last Sensurround sequences came on. The whole place shook. I still remember those lighting sconces sort of jingling and shaking. And THEN you think, I am in a building built in the 1920s.... should it really be withstanding this physical torture after fifty years of existence? Never the less, I stayed, was thrilled by the process and lived to tell about it.
