I'm japanese. I had a major earthquake of magnitude 7.3 in a local city in Japan six years ago. Aftershocks did not stop for several months, and it seemed that I was always on board for the first month. Really the ground was always eerily shaking like a wave. From that actual experience, I trust Japan's seismic technology and disaster preparedness. What impressed me most was that Japan as a whole helped the disaster area.

The light flashes are a natural phenomena that's not fully understood yet. All new Japanese bulidings and bridges just can't be built without earthquake proof measures. Slowly all old type of buildings are getting replaced like this for last 20-25 years. This replacement of bulidings that is continuing has slowly made Japan resilient to earthquakes. This type of mandatory earthquake proof law is difficult to pass in other not so rich countries where contractors will protest as Japanese type earthquake proof buildings will increase construction cost tremendously.

Well, just make the resonance frequency of building different from the one any earthquake can cause. It's quite old physics actually, and engineers have been using it since decades. Here in Chiba Prefecture also the shake was fairly strong and it was long. The 'shake' is measured here in Japan as per the degree of shake on the surface. This being because both magnitude, depth and also of course the geological formation of the area all play a part in the level of shake felt. The unit is 'shindo'. The hardest hit areas where an 'Upper 6' (literally, 6-Strong). Here in Chiba, Tokyo it was level 4. Upper 6 causes severe damage, almost impossible to stand and is a threat to life. To give a real life example, last night's earthquake caused the Tohoku Shinkansen to derail whilst it was travelling through Fukushima, although it was likely that the train was already coming to a halt. There were no injuries. Level 4 is a strong shake, but rarely causes structural damage, standing and moving is possible although some unstable objects may fall. Both levels 5 and 6 are split into lower and upper.

I was in the middle of 5th grade social studies class in Tokyo when it hit. First came the 7.1 or 7.3 Earthquake which sent us under our tables expecting it to be a routine earthquake scenario. Little did we know that moments later something I can only describe as a series of violent unforgiving shockwaves pushed the entire neighborhood in one direction to the next. I remember cracks in the streets and the windows being slammed by the force of the quake, all cabinets thrown wide open. As others have said in the comments, an Earthquake is a universally humbling experience...... there is not a single thing you as a Human being can do to remedy the situation, nothing to hide and nothing besides a flying vehicle or a fast, large boat to hide from one on.

Earthquake is the scariest force of nature because you can't see it, you can't run from it, or hide, you don't know how strong it'll grow or when it'll stop... you can only cover under stuff and hope for the best...while everything around you rumbles and shakes violently..

the blackouts may also be manually setup to prevent major damages from gas leaks inside houses with anything that can spark. sort of a smart pro-active planning. if naturally caused then it is clear the light flashes were caused by power lines damages.

The earthquake's center and how far from the cities, how close to the surface is very important, an eathquake with 7.0 whose center is 10km deep can be more destructive than 8.0 with 140 km deep. It is not just the magnitude that defines the damage.

I’ve experienced a 9 before, during 3/11. I was 3 then so I barely remember anything. I only remember celebrating my birthday and eating blue cupcakes. After the nuclear power plant collapsed we moved to another country, and I got back 3 years ago. This was the first big earthquake I’ve felt (besides an earthquake simulator for an 8) since coming back. It was in the middle of the night, and we just got our helmets and went to sit outside right in front of our door. Most of the time it’s safer inside than outside but climbing the stairs during a 7 to hide under table is much more dangerous.

This is fascinating... I remember back when I was a freshman back in highschool. There was a powerful earthquake that lasted for just around 3 seconds. It was literally a few strong shakes, like it can be counted on one hand. A few seconds later heavy rain just fell without warning. Of course it was a cloudy day but still it usually starts with a few drops, not a sudden downpour. And it didn't last long neither.

I live in Nagoya in central Japan on the 15th floor of an apartment building there. The quake felt here was slow and steady compared to how fast and rough it was up north of the country. @@Aeternum_Gaming That's what everyone assumes but it's not always the case. This phenomenon existed well before electricity existed and there's a rational explanation for everything. Another explanation scientists have is it's caused from the immense pressure on some types of rocks which have proven to ionize air particles. Another theory could be local disruption of the Earth's magnetic field or the intense friction of rocks generating a high voltage discharge. (Triboluminescence).
