My daughter’s great aunt was put in Lennox Castle age 15 because she ran away as a teen and misbehaved. Probably the result of her mum passing. She was released when she was in her forties. Margaret was not mentally ill or had deficits when she was institutionalised but she did on release. I wonder if that is the teen you were talking about. My daughter’s gran and family visited her regularly. She was very much loved.

That's horrendous. Trouble is there were so many women it happened too for simply being rebellious. Baby out of wedlock and the woman got locked up, the man left free to continue on with his life without consequence. Even in the 80s single mums got all the abuse especially in the newspapers. Such a different world now.

I really enjoyed this History Hit documentary. Those professors with their authorative and informed arguments make for a riveting and absorbing discussion of some of the Middle Ages most obscure periods. Whilst I am unsure what "bell end" means and why Professor Al always needs a proper haircut, their dramatic telling of Scotlands darkest epoch remains a true master class in documentary TV.

As a scottish person that lives in a "village" is basically a town but doesnt have all the requirements to be one. In summer i can hear cows screaming for no bloody reason while im trying to sleep at 2 am. And theres ruins from the 1800s tumbled down massive houses. Why do the fireplaces always stay intact and nothing else? When i was a moody teen i use to sit on a old farmers tumbled down fireplace. Looked like a stone arch way but must have been such a wee cosy farm house back when built. I use to love climbing over fences into feilds and finding streams, river and abandoned places. Thats why i love you guys so much.

When I put on the light , every surface was alive with cockroaches! Nearly 50 years on and I still shudder to think of it !

I remember visiting this place with my mate Jimmy in the late 90s (I think about then) It was about when the area was about to be developed. You could drive up to it nearly. You could still see the white tiles on the surgical areas and the occasional gurney and various other bits of furniture lying around the outside. We didn't know anything about the history at the time (pre Internet), but the place had a real spoopy vibe to it. Mostly because it was dusk, but mostly because of the creepy security guard following us about.
