I still remember the instruction manual, which was also pretty funny. One of the SNES buttons served no purpose, so they described it as "This turns on Mrs. Krantz's porch light in Germany" or something. Ha! Always loved the cow, too. Great game.

Genesis featured more mature titles. Splatterhouse for example. Also the Genesis version of Mortal Kombat featured blood and gore.

True. It's a known fact that Nintendo has always catered to younger crowds. You can argue round and round about subtle differences between sound, graphics, framerates and bits. But at the end of the day, what it really comes down to is games and content. As kids we wanted to play violent games with gore, not bubble-gum games for kids, or even dumbed down beat-em-ups for teens. Aside from cross platform games and timed releases like Mortal Kombat; It's true the SNES (as well as its predecessor) had some "violent" games like Double Dragon and Final Fight, but Genesis had games like Streets of Rage, Robocop vs Terminator, The Punisher ('93), Splatterhouse, the Mutant League franchise, and a very underrated game called Cyborg Justice where there wasn't so much gore as there was weaponry, such as circular saws, flamethrowers, grinders, and the ability to rip body parts off, as well as an entire torso; even though technically all these things were being done to cyborgs. Still, it made for a very violent game that us kids back then could slip under even the toughest parent's radar at Blockbuster or Warehouse video stores (back when that was the only way to play games aside from waiting for birthdays or Christmas). Bottom line, Nintendo though it has its moments with some borderline adult oriented games, it never would touch what game developers were doing for Sega, and that why I preferred the Genesis.

They both feature the same awesome backgrounds, the fugly 3D Earthworm Jim in the levels' titlecards, no 3D effects on the houses in Puppy Love... Maybe the Saturn one lacks a weird screen crop or something, don't know if the music has more or less quality though...

I always ran out of air during that part, no matter how fast I drove that goddamn sphere, I couldn't get past that level. The rules of sports games might be set, but the mechanics and how they "play" are not. Also not all sports games follow the rules, Mutant League Football for instance, which was a fan favorite "football" game on genesis was very different then Madden. It's like saying all racing games follow the same rule and therefore are the same game. But Gran Turismo plays nothing like Burnout.

As for yearly versions, releasing a new Madden, NHL or Golf game is an antiquated practice nowadays. Back then it was the only way to update, polish and add features to a game.

SNES had more top tier games, but the Genesis hardware was WAY faster. A lot of people like to point to Star Fox but Genesis could do the same with Virtua Racing and run it at a higher frame rate than SF. The SNES also had a resolution ratio of 8:7, that's why games with highly detailed sprites like Lion King look better on the Genesis. The SNES would stretch everything to fill a 4:3 screen and the characters would get distorted.

Some top exclusives from Genesis, Shinning Force I + II, Beyond Oasis, Gunstar heroes. I know Nintendo has a bunch, but even Sega fans know the big name Nintendo titles. These are some titles that even Sega fans might not be familiar with. And I'm not making the argument that Sega is better, I'm not even sure which I like better, I love them both, they both have must play games, I'm just trying to name some fairly obscure Genesis games that don't typically get mentioned in these Sega Vs Nintendo debates.

The Nintendo fanboys are fanboys because they never owned a Sega. I was lucky to have had both in their heyday, and it was always about the unique games on each system. Genesis had the gritty, darker, more adult-oriented stuff like Road Rash, Shadowrun, or Splatterhouse, whereas SNES had the amazing party games like Super Mario Kart, Rock 'n' Roll Racing, and Secret of Mana.

I prefer the Genesis, because more of my friends had it, so I played it a lot more. I think only one friend had the SNES, and I only played a handful of hours on it. So I have much better memories of the Genesis... Hours upon hours of playing Streets of Rage 2 with my friend... Hours and hours of X-Men 2 Clone Wars with my other friend, etc. For nostalgia reasons, the Genesis is a far better system.

Smokey McJoint the MegaDrive/Genesis also has an extra level which the SNES doesn't have, the SNES does have really nice backgrounds even more so than Sega. It's not just music either, several sound effects aren't even in the SNES version at all, and most sound just as good, if not better, on Sega.

You can raise the mega drives bar a bit more by realising that it was made to compete with the NES not the SNES like most think i know its considered the same generation as the SNES but its pushing it i think when you consider that the mega CD was the SEGA reply to that particular machine, some see it as merely an addon but addon or not it was still the mega cds raison d'etre Thus i see the mega drive and mega cd as a success at what it was designed to do it competed with nintendos baby and without doing too much more than having a cd player attached to it pushed nintendo to create alliances with sony and phillips that would forever change gaming (so you could blame sega for the playstation and cdi zelda games)

+Tony Spike Indeed and there's lot more gems on Mega Drive than I think they are eve aware of. They say the Mega Drive is all bout sports, but there's another very popular genre that you are way better set with Mega Drive than SNES, shooters (shoot 'em ups, sumps or what ever you want to call them), SNES had only a few and they suffered from ridiculous slow downs. If RPGs is what you want, then you are better with SNES, I'll admit that.

I think the competition between the SNES and Genesis is much much closer than what you make it out to be. I still think SNES is better overall. But the Genesis has some exceptionally good games that SNES didn't like Comix Zone, Truxton, Ristar, Phantasy Star, Gunstar Heroes, and Toe-Jam and Earl.

On the subject of why the Jedi took Jar-Jar with them...Qui-Gon says they need him to guide them through the planet's core and to the capital city. However, Jar-Jar never once gives them directions, and while they are traveling through the core, Qui-Gon says "The Force will guide us". So it was just more bad storytelling from the prequels.

Earthworm Jim was one of my of favourite games growing up!!! Took me ages to finish as a kid but eventually got there. As for sports games, it's not so much about the sport but more about how the technology or mechanics allow you to play that sport. Some developers designed WAY better games.

Sega's Genesis had a faster CPU and was way better with any fast-paced game with lots of crazy action on screen. Alien Soldier, Ranger X, Dynamite Headdy and of course Contra Hard Corps, which is better, faster and funnier than Contra on the Snes. Snes was better at atmospheric rpgs. The Genesis was already 5 years old during the height of the 16 bit war and was holding a slight edge in North America. The Genesis's development started in 1987, the SNES had two years worth of new developments to work with. Yet they could still not beat a machine with half the power and no FX chips. Alexis Gutierrez Worldwide yes, but that's only because of of the boost it got from how insanely well it sold in Japan coupled with how poorly the Mega Drive sold there. In most other regions including the Americas the SNES was behind. Ultimately both consoles sold ridiculously well. Who "won" doesn't matter and people should get over this console war and appreciate what all consoles at the time had to offer. Both consoles were winners for their respective companies.

Between earthworm jim 1 and 2 and diddy's kong quest, these games are handsdown my favorites as far as game play and soundtracks go. This is where i find video games to be an art form in the sense of visuals and music. Theres something about the backgrounds that are so beautiful on such a surreal level. I have the 32 bit versions of the soundtracks on my ipod as well... and yes i play them really fucking loud. Lol

The Sonic games are still probably the best-developed Megadrive games, and the ones that utilize its full potential. But there are lots of awesome games, not just better sports games. Also, I love the 6-button Megadrive joypad, that's still my favourite controller ever. I don't understand why the PlayStation diamond button layout had to become the industry standard. Even Sega wussed out on that when they made the Dreamcast. I still play fighting games with the 6-button layout.

Here we go again with the Genesis vs SNES debate. Genesis had GREAT games just because SNES had Chrono Trigger means your going to take away from the long time of great RPG's. Awesome platforms like Ristar? Fast games like Contra: Hard corps? It had more then just "better sports games". These fans keep downplaying the Sega just because Nintendo is still around. But it was harder to program for, and in practice, SNES games had much better sound. The point James and Mike are making is that for every legendary, top-tier Genesis game, you can probably find three or four legendary, top-tier SNES games, and graphics and sound don't really factor into this. And then you get into stuff about how Genesis had the best versions of Aladdin/Jurassic Park/Mortal Kombat, but those arguments don't really help the case for the Genesis, as it's sort of an "exceptions that prove the rule" thing.

BatmansButt Butler I get the impression that Mike hasn't spent too much time on the Genesis so I tend to take his opinions with a pinch of salt. Those who know the system well could find plenty of games that they feel trump any SNES title that's brought up. For instance some feel that Beyond Oasis trumps Link to the Past, many would feel that Phantasy Star IV trumps any 16 bit RPG period. It's just the Genesis games tend to have been played by less people so the SNES often wins out in debates like this, purely through ignorance of exactly what the Genesis has to offer, which is a shame. That said I see plenty of Genesis love on many of the more hardcore gaming channels, those in the know definitely know, I wouldn't include Mike and James in this particularly, they're just a couple of dudes who love games but their frame of reference seems pretty casual and fairly rose tinted by Nintendo, like a lot of people from that generation.

He was vital to TPM's story, he took the Jedi to his city because they needed a faster way to reach Theed, Naboo's capitol city. Basically thanks to Jar Jar's kindness their planet united as one to fight the Trade Federation. That's not even getting into his roles in numerous episodes of TCW, more often then not helping save planets from invasions or armageddon. People tend to think Jar Jar acted the way you see him in the infamous picture, where he's giving a thumbs up with his tounge hanging out. Far from it, Jar Jar was and is a good-hearted, whimsical-like SW character that adds to the fantasy element the franchise has. ok this is the thing, the genesis had a yamaha FM synth. it was low quality, but basically a professional musical instrument. it was hard to program, it was non portable code too, snes used samples which are easy to make, play and port, that was a HUGE factor of why genesis ports had worse sound, if the original was genesis, you could just render the synth into samples and make a decent snes port in no time, the other way around would require a lot of work, mostly artistic work too, and it wouldn't sound the same in most cases cause it's just not possible. a lot of artists love the genesis for this reason, it is an original musical instrument, while the snes provided nothing original at all, just the same sampling you could find in almost any computer. NES and gameboy were different that's why people still compose for them. personally, i love trackers, but i love synth chips way more, tho they are hard to come by and really hard to make good audio with them, especially FM which is one of the hardest forms of synthesis. oh and btw, he's not whipping with his head, he's uses himself as a whip xD hilarious game
