Best guide there is! One thing missing is more details on how insertion depth affects frequency response, as this can definitely make or break an IEM for an individual. You can tame bright IEMs by using tips that allow you to insert deeper, but this also lose some bass. In my experience basically shallower insertion -> more V shape, deeper insertion -> more flat (or mid-forward). This is all on the precondition that you get perfect seal.
@Jaawaudio5 ай бұрын
Great point! I didn't want to get too deep (heh) into insertion depth, because I feel the variables with personal ear canal resonance and acoustic impedance are outside the scope of this basic guide.

Just an excellent and comprehensive video on this surprisingly important subject! Some talk about cables and burn in but l suspect this is the quickest way to improve sound quality, especially in the budget range of IEMs where i dwell 😊 I rocked the Clarion tips for quite a while and have just discovered the Kbear 07s which are very inexpensive and work great for me. Great for bass especially. The cylinder shape of the Dunu S&S don't fit my ears and so far I've not found a pair of foams that work for me either. So, as you say, it's very personal in terms of what works for who. Again, great work on the video!
@JaawaudioАй бұрын
Thanks for the kind words, glad you enjoyed the video! And you'd be very much correct in suspecting eartips matter a whole lot more. I'd go as far as to say burn-in and cables basically are margin-of-error stuff. I say this, because frankly there's no hard evidence for them, just listening experiences that can't be replicated (it doesn't matter that there's a few special cases, where a near-zero impedance driver is affected by different impedance cables etc. when pretty much all cables are vaguely around 1ohm and drivers somewhere around 10-30 ohm.) Burn-in does nothing. If it did, the drivers would come out sounding worse at least some of the time, but as we know, the claim is the sound is better, 100% of the time, makes no sense. And it's actually a really bad thing, if the drivers would change in sound after just a week of listening, that would mean they aren't durable at all. So rest easy, save your money for exploring different IEMs, or save even more by exploring EQ tuning :)
@philipm.4738Ай бұрын
@@Jaawaudio Great points. I'm definitely not an audiophile so those elements are better left to them. Just today I experienced listening to several different IEMs back to back on a song and when I went back to the first set, I couldn't believe how different they sounded from what I just remembered them sounding like. I suspect that has more to do with the burn in "effect" , ie. sound perception, than any actual sound change! Thanks so much for taking the time to respond to my comments. Very much appreciated!
@JaawaudioАй бұрын
@@philipm.4738 Yes, the so called "brain burn-in" is a real thing, we adjust to sounds in just minutes, and also the physical differences between different days alters our hearing. But at the end of the day, all listening experiences are real, it's what you experience, so in that sense everything is true and real, just can't expect anyone else to hear it exactly the same :D

I recently bought my first multidriver IEM (The FIIO FH15). Because the nozzle is wider than I'm used to I have been on quite a journey to find eartips that work with my ears. My ear canals aren't the same size on both sides and my ear canals curve upward immediatly. I have trouble finding tips that seal without the opening sitting against the side of my ear canal. I'm now using the SS spinfits W1 for my right ear and MS spinfits W1 in my left ear.

Another factor I'd like to add which is a big one for me is ear canal opening while your jaws closed. I've had trouble with IEM fitment for years at this point and I failed to nail down what's causing it till eventually it hit me. My left ear canal becomes narrower more towards the inside compared to my right. It becomes more problematic since the opening on both of my ears are about the same. I've tried to use a smaller eartip size on my left IEM, but I can't get rid of the feeling that I get a much more snug fit on my left than my right. It's a feeling I still haven't overcome, which has really made enjoying music with IEM's difficult. Perhaps custom IEM's will be able to address it. People who are able to achieve perfect seals on both ears are quite honestly lucky lol

I think I might have to cut them with scissors or something. I dont see how anyone can use these, all three sizes dont work and I usually only wear L size eartips. I'm still struggling with eartips. The best experience I have so far is the Spinfit CP100+ extra small (XS) size. I haven't tried many of course. I've had Divinity Velvet, Spring Tips Moondrop, and KZ tips. Something about my right ear is weird/different. When it sealed perfectly, the sound entirely disappears as if there's no room for the air to resonate the sound. So I push in deeper and that somehow solves the problem (but it does get a bit uncomfortable. But that means I have to push it deep. At times, when I move it goes back to losing sound entirely. I don't know why that is to be honest. It's like there's a wall inside my ears that when I insert IEM, it gets stuck there. But when I push deeper, it gets over the wall and it sounds good. Any suggestion what eartips might fit in this case? (And this only happens in one ear. My left ear is just fine).
