I'm deeply impressed by the knowledge and dedication that goes into building these chargers, but (even) more importantly the software that drives them. Top notch work

Prior last year, this kind of integrated RCD wasn't allowed in Finland, bu they became allowed when SFS 6000 electrical installation regulations were updated in 2022. Our housing cooperative has 20 Easee Charges and reservation for 26 more. I designed the system myself and took advantage of Easee's integrated protection and didn't install traditional RCD's or circuit breakers in front of the chargers. Can you also make video of how an overcurrent protection works in your product?

How is this possible, as the standards are EN IEC, the same in the whole. The swedish are now questioning the integrated RCD's, since they are not electromecanical, just digital trip relays. Deviation from the norm/standard is possible, it's not mandatory to follow, but Easee must prove that the chargeberry is safe, as safe as worded in the standards.

@@Ritari2000 And that is a big issue. The swedish authorities have banned further sales of the chargerobot, and claim that the rules in the EU are equal, which they are not, according to yourself. So why so bombastic claims from the Swedes? They started rolling this snowball, with the "experts" and media, and soon enough, the company is bankrupt. On claims, that the chargerobot is not safe. This is just plain sad, I wonder if pride, or politics are ulterior motives? Source letter: cdn.tek.no/editorial-content/22EV1261.pdf

The issue is that it doesn’t follow the declared standards, not that it is unsafe. I keep mine until told otherwise :)

In Finland we had this problem prior 2022, but last year our electrical installation regulations were updated and these kind of integrated electronical RCD's became approved. Since our regulations are based on European EN-standards, probably other countries too adopt new standards when they update their national regulations. It's actually bit amazing that those got accepted here. Usually Finnish authorities are a bit traditional and they accept new things years after other European countries.

@@Ritari2000 This was possible because we had EVC committee working on the SFS6000 this time as well, and that group is not at all "too traditional" ;)

When are you launching a charger with V2X? I think your SW & HW leverage will be even more obvious in such a product 💪🏻

Hey Magnus, this is something that we are working on. Since 2018 we have envisioned and hoped that the adoption of this standard would become a reality and took the chance on implementing the hardware. Currently the number of cars that support this are minimal, but it looks like car manufacturers are starting to adopt this for AC charging as well. We have done some initial testing on the cars that have been available. Both hardware and firmware still need further work and testing to ensure we can support ISO 15118. Right now, we can say we are hopeful that we can support ISO 15118 in the near future.

What about the other issue? The control pilot wire that is used by the car to signal "car connected/charging readyness" is supposed to have safety extra low voltage. Only if a car is connected successfully will the 230V circuits be put live. So in case the charging cable falls i.e. into a puddle of water, you won't be electrocuted. If the insulation test is not passed, doesn't that mean it's not SELV? So when someone does drop the cable and it falls into a puddle, you will have some 230 volts there instead of 12V. By the standard, a resistor is connected to the control pilot wire by the vehicle to signal "charging readiness". To allow the charger to distinguish between a real resistor of a few kiloohms and some salted water (again, that annoying puddle that just might be out there in the real world of wind and weather) having a similar resistance value, there has to be a diode in series to the resistor. So the 12V of the control pilot wire drops to a lower value only for one half cycle, it stays unaffected for the other. If not, the charger will not connect the live wires with 230V relative to ground each. My point is, arguing that you can physically not touch the control pilot contact and thus it doesn't matter if it is SELV regardless of what the standard says, is kinda moot because of that very puddle scenario. Am I missing something here?

Safety standards are written in blood as they say. Maybe your RCD solution is good enough for this particular application or maybe it will fail under a weird set of circumstances that you have not foreseen. You do not get to define what an RCD or DC protection is. That’s what standards are for. You do not like the current standards then work to change them.

Nobody is saying the EV charger is the problem it’s the Electrical Standards is the issue, due to the rapid development of new electrical equipment not just EV charges. The Electrical Standards are not keeping up. In the UK I’m installing a RCD upstream with a warning notice until Electrical Standard are changed.

They dont write rubbish, they do tests in order to make customers safe when companies cut corners or dont have the knowledge to do a safe product. Design and digitalisation is good but can not replace good and safe engineering.

It seems like also Tesla uses an integrated RCD in the latest version of their "Wall Connector". At least in the WC sold in the US market, according to the teardown video published yesterday by Munro: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aqi5mZyviNqNrZY

doesnt matter if it's better than a traditional RCD, it does NOT follow the regulations and standards in the EU. And thats why it get's banned. If you build a product outside the current standards, ther has to be testing to prove that it is equivalent, doesnt matter if you say it's better.
@andersnilsson251

But the problem still persists, you have violated national and EU harmonized standards. In my view that is kind of "proof" that you either lack the knowledge to follow the standards or you simply do not care to follow them. Honestly, I do not know which is worse.

Ok, lets talk Reulations, witch terms of a RCD in your Country are violated? I checked back and forth our national regulations and i didn’t find anything that violates our national law. And we apply EU standards. For example, if a life part of the pin is exposed in a type 2 plug, this issue would be a violation for all EV chargers who have a outlet installed. If the rcd is tripping below a 30mA AC and a 6mA DC fault, where are your national issues? Let us know, enlighten us. Im open to lear neu stuff every day!

This method of RCD is far better than the ones installed in a project ev. I know all countries are different, but this in the UK is the best and also they fit a updated RCD in the house fuse box.

I like that you guys are disrupting the market but seriously, what did you think would happen if you failed to comply with EU safety directives when you are outputting 5x as much electricity for 20x as long as any other household device? Really careless. A lot of people lost their jobs, you made the EV look bad, and it looks like an otherwise successful company will go bust because you decided that you could make your own rules at the expense of safety where there is enough power to vaporise someone.
