Ronald Kleinman You're very welcome, I truly meant it. My planing now includes 5 buckets for tomatoes, cucumbers & melon. I also want to add a separate container for some bell peppers and another container for lettuce & herbs. My only question involves the fertilizer you use & at what point in time or EC do you change the solution ? Many thanks, Jim

James Kerwin Check out the level control video I just posted - it helps for multiple bucket systems - as long as the same nutrient is used. I usually use Botanicare Pro Blend plus grow and bloom. I run up to 1500 ppm as the plants grow and then switch to bloom as flowers develop. I have run up to close to 2,000 ppm as fruit develops - change both solutions about once a month. Good luck - there are a lot of people using this system now and it seems to work great. Thanks for the comment James!

Thanks Brendan! One of the people that uses this system called me a f'ing genius. I told him that statement was a tad over the top! I stumbled on this by many years of experiments looking for the simplest way to grow plants. This works! The adapter is just getting hoses that fit into each other from 1/4" ID (inside diameter) to 1/2" ID. The grommet, elbow, bucket and net basket came from the local hydro shop, hoses from Home Depot. Lowe's buckets work well too. Cheap to buy assembled too.

Just wanted to say thanks Ronald! I'm trying on my current kratky beans as even though it works well, the top roots tend to dry out. I'm hoping that besides the extra oxygen in the water, the bubbles popping will keep the upper roots a little bit more moist and keep it humid in the bucket...all without airstones. Thanks again!

Indeed, a very simple way to supercharge your growing rates. Deep Water Culture is very quickly becoming America's favorite way of growing hydroponically, and this makes perfect sense considering it is arguably the most cost-effective way of growing. I can assure you compared to top feed drip hydro systems, you'll save yourself a lot of time cleaning up clogged sprinklers. Not exactly a problem you'll ever have in a DWC.
@rwkleinman12 жыл бұрын
You speak the truth! I have used demineralized water and it is considerably better than most well water and a little better than most tap water so growth is better with demineralized water for sure. The problem, at least with a large hydro garden, is expense - so if you get decent results form tap water it is considerably cheaper to use than making and using purified water. Thanks for the comment and looking forward to your video!

I change my nutrient solution about once a month - seems to work ok. But, in between changes, I just add water through the growing medium and add nutrient through the tube - that has worked great so far and I have been doing it for a couple of years now.

If you use compost tea instead of commercial fertilizer in a DWC system, you'll get incredible results for very little expense. The best thing about DWC, especially if it recirculates (even within a single bucket) is it is much harder to burn your roots, and you can use the nute solution much longer than in other hydro methods. Some people only change solution once, when going from veg to flower/fruit, or run at higher ppms, like over 1500 ppm.

Could you please explain the air tube adapter you have there? Are you going from 1/4 to 1/2 inch? What are the tube diameters that you are using? I just took a air hose and taped it into a circle, so it would sit in the bottom of my bucket with about 2 inches around the out side. I used a 1/32 drill bit and put holes in the tube circle an inch apart. Then I buried it in potting soil and water. I wished I had a little sand to mix with it. Basically made mud. With the tube coming out of the top of the pail I hooked to a manifold from my air pump. I did 4 of the 15 seedlings I had, (that was all the air fitting I could find or I would have done more) They are, after 3 days, 2 inches taller and their stocks are twice the size as the rest of the seedlings. I'm also considering mixing in diapers, because I'm not there to water all the time.

I doubt if there would be much difference in the results between either method. I have gotten excellent results with tomatoes growing in hydro and soil. I like growing hydroponically because you have more control of plant growth. I believe that the type of fertilizer used and controlling the growing environment are the main things to look at for optimal growth.

That adapter is just another piece of hose. You just get hoses that fit into each other and reduce from 1/2" to 1/4". They have all the hoses you need at Home Depot - experiment and you will find the right combination. On the newest system we've reduced the main hose to 3/8" ID, a piece of 3/8" OD hose (the black piece you saw) fits inside and the 1/4" air tube fits inside that one. Good luck!

Hi Ronald! Your video are very impressive. And you explain real well. I am planning to grow tomatoes in your DWC style ;-) So just a few questions. 1. Do you change your nutrient for this DWC tomato? If so how often. 2. Does your air pump remain working 24x7 or you give any rest time? 3. Do you maintain any certain water level or fills up when the bucket goes almost empty? 4. How often you water an in production tomato plant for the this variety? 5. If I plan to grow two tomatoes plants in one 5 gallon bucket what do you think will that work?
@rwkleinman10 жыл бұрын
Hi Mutee, Thanks for watching my video! Here's the answers to your questions: 1. I change the nutrient about every month. 2. I run the pump 24/7 but some people turn it off a night. 3. I maintain the level at th ebottom of the net basket until there are plenty of roots - then you can let get lower but never empty. 4. I water more often as the plant gets bigger because it uses more water. 5. I have grown two plants in a bucket but it gets crowded - one will give you plenty of tomatoes. Thanks again and good luck!

@101AOK Yes - just let run 24/7 and the roots get plenty of air and will not rot. Replace the nutrient solution at least once a month and add one cap of hydrogen peroxide and about 4 drops of Super thrive or a vitamin supplement to the nutrient and make sure the nutrient solution is kept up towards the middle of the net basket. These systems are extremely simple and work unbelievably well - all 4 of my set-ups like this are kicking butt! Thanks for the good comment.

That would depend on how strong your pump is. A standard air pump used for a 10 gallon fish aquarium would do fine for four or five 5 gallon buckets.

Hello Ronald I have had some good results with inexpensive Ex cut flower water buckets planting and growing potatoes, carrots, leeks and beans etc in them. I grow these outdoors on my Patio. Is a Deep Water Culture Bucket System suitable for using outdoors? I was thinking that rain could be an issue.

DWC buckets work great outdoors - I have used them under this same setup I used to experiment with these wick systems at: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eJy1fauopMyHj68 A transparent structure shielding the plants and the buckets from the rain is a must. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching!

Ron, thanks for your videos. My only question is about keeping the system cool in the heat of the summer. I would like to try this but it would have to be on my back porch. Here i Louisiana, the summers are blazing hot and the humidity makes them that much worse. Without investing in a chiller or being on "bottle duty" to add bottles of frozen water to keep the temperature of the water/nutrient res down, do you think there is any chance of having success with a small DWC system? Any advice? Thanks in advance for your answer.
@rwkleinman10 жыл бұрын
A friend started 4 of these bucket systems outside in Arizona. It worked fantastic in the Spring but, as the weather heated up, the plants started to suffer. In my area, Seattle, you can use these outside without any problem - as long as the water temp doesn't get above 80 degrees F, it does fine. Also, using them inside usually isn't a problem either. Unfortunately, in hot areas, if you can't use DWC unless there is a way to keep the temperature low enough to keep the roots relatively cool. There are chillers you can adapt to larger DWC reservoirs but it would be hard to adapt to the buckets. You would almost have to do your "bottle duty" thing or surround the buckets with cooler water to keep the plants alive. Sorry I can't give you happy advice on this item!
@brendanisdead11 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply! I checked out your site looking for which hoses to get to make the adapter. I saw the preassembled DWC buckets you have there...and the tube has some sort of black nozzle looking thing at the top. It looks like you can just plug your 1/4" air hose right into it. I already have all of my elbows and grommets, is there any way I can just buy that adapter? If not...do you remember the exact sizes you used to make your own? Thanks again! I'm done with airstones.
@rwkleinman12 жыл бұрын
You are right - it is easy! Usually the simplest way is not only less expensive but also more effective. On person remarked that air stones producing those "micro bubbles" are necessary to maximize growth - that is total BS - plant's roots love raw air and plenty of it! Thanks for the comment!

Actually, aquaponics is a very productive, worthwhile venture but considerably more expensive and more work that the simple DWC bucket system you saw in this video.You definitely have the added benefit of providing healthy, toxin-free fish as well as veggies.You do need to add water to your system and the 10 x the yield is a very optimistic! The DWC bucket system is a great introduction to hydro and you can continue from there. I'm working on a "Keep it Simple" aquaponic system now -stay tuned!

@hindugoat230210 жыл бұрын
the air stone is essential... the benefit of DWC is increased dissolved oxygen to the root mass. Air stones usually made from compressed sand break the air up into tiny bubbles that are easily absorbed into the water. You cant just blow air through a tube and make bubbles, you would get a fraction of the oxygen dissolving into the water, the large bubbles mostly float straight to the top. do a side by side comparison and measure the dissolved oxygen levels...
@sushiyamaster9895 жыл бұрын
I know this is ancient but NO. Air stones are not nearly fine enough to be absorbed properly in the water. Disruption of the water surface interacting with the air is what it's about. Ever see a foaming pump in a managed pond or lake? You will see waterfalls and pumps moving a d splashing water. Air stones are great at disrupting the waters surface mixing oxygen in. You certainly aren't injecting the water with oxygen atleast not with anything available at your hydroponics or pet store.
