I love Kratky. Just set it up correctly, then you can forget about it for some months. Then just pick fruits every day. The better you set it up, the more fruits. I usually dont want to waste my precious time on doing plant work, but I might trim the plants once a month just to get better results. I have gotten 4kg tomatoes, 1.4kg peppers, 2kg cucumbers in the first try. It takes minutes to set up and then with some decent lights u will be good. I hope to be able to get the value I spent on lights and tent back from harvesting fruits.

Here's another idea for you... 😁 I've been experimentering with different nutritional solutions. I've had basically no luck whatsoever with the store bought specifically meant for hydroponic growing medium but, last year I took a LARGISH fish tank, bought about 20 fish, type mostly "goldfish" that "poop" a lot. Rigged up a fish tank water pump that took water from the fish tank, up to the top growing rain gutter like strukturs that held the plants. I didn't put the tube with the water from the fish tank near the bottom of the rain gutters but, about half way up the side of each gutter, since I didn't want the gutters/plants to ever be without water, if for whatever reason the pump would stop working, power go out etc. Connected the gutter with plants with a hose to the first top one and gravity made the water flow down through the gutter/plants below and so on until I reached the fish tank again and the water went back into the tank. I also put a few "floating" small plants on the surface of the fish tank and the fish loved swimming through the long roots and ate all the "nutrients" from whatever was in the water that rotated through the system. I realized soon that I really didn't have to feed fish food that much to the fish in the tank but, still did since I figured that whatever they didn't eat, would go through the plants in the gutters and provide extra nutrients to them. It worked better than I had ever dreamed of. Will be doing the same this year too, with an added system. I had NO filter in the fish tank to remove dirt/poop/impurities, as those somehow disappeared when having gone through the "filter" of the roots of the plants.

With Kratky it's important to have air over the water so the plants can grow air roots too. And then it might yield less, but less fuss too!
@DMPB-fi2ir Жыл бұрын
actually both need air space even the DWC its not the bubbles in the water that assist its the water movement at surface you can do the same thing with a tiny cpu fan from a computer blowing air over the water surface via a duct in both systems. It's the fluid motion NOT the bubbles that help, the surface area of the bubbles and the time in contact with water is not going to give a measurable exchange what most. it is the agitation of the surface so in affect a small fane blowing ocer the surface OR and very small water pump moving the water around will do the same as a bubbler. but most importantly the airs space at top is the most critical for roots to access o2 for absorption

Is the heating up of the water in the bucket especially in summer an issue (root rot etc)? Any experience, what can I do to prevent?
@TheAdhdGardener Жыл бұрын
It can be an issue in the summer time depending if the bucket is in direct sun during the day n painted black. Itll cook the roots. I let that water cool to room temperature b4 adding the plant. Also I put the hydro outside in a partly shaded spot
@OffGridInvestor Жыл бұрын
Just a thought. Have you tried a sgeet of cardboard like 2 inches in front of the bucket? Like shade the bucket itself? I have had experience with wood heater systems and radiant heat and if you have another layer or iron or cement sheet, a few inches gap, then another, you can go from steel starting to glow red to a nice heat. Each layer has a significant temperature drop. But trapped air will also hold the high temperature. If the air can escape, you don't end up with hot air pockets.

ok.. first if you saw it on toktok it was idiocy. kratky CANT outperform dwc, the ONLY advantage it has is laziness (since you dont have to use electricity). theres no need to use netcups AND pool noodles, you can just hold the plant in the pool noodle (wtf..noodle AND netcup AND noodle? no). never use white buckets for hydro, light goes through and it produces algae... then again you are using contaminated water anyways if youre using rain water with giant light gaps in the lid. thats too much water, theres supposed to be 1-3 inch gap under net cup. thats not near enough bubbles for dwc, get a bigger stone and use both outputs with a Y connector to the bigger stone. there should be a boiling looking effect where none of the water is resting. im guessing theres no results here because you got root rot and killed them.
@TheAdhdGardener Жыл бұрын
So judgey aren't ya. U do know there are more than 1 way to do hydro🤦♀️ your way sounds good but the way I do mine also works well. NO there was no root rot at any point. So what if kratky is the "lazy" way to do it. It still works n that's what matters. My plants died because of aphids. I currently set it up again and so far although Dwc is doing awesome the kratky one looks good too. As far as bubbles ya u wanna see it bubbling but there is such a thing as too much oxygen depending on container size. If you give too much O2 it can stunt your growth(Google it)
@megaflux7144 Жыл бұрын
@@TheAdhdGardener didnt realize you were above improving your technique.. or learning. you arent supposed to be feeding the roots the air IN the water (which is why theres supposed to be a 1 inch+ gap under the net cup), the bubbles popping is supposed to create droplets of oxygen infused water+nutes which causes more roots to come out from the sides and leads to the explosive growth associated with DWC. if you can cause oxygen toxicity with a 15$ walmart fish pump i will eat my hat (it would be up there with proof of aliens, time travel, or alternate dimensions). what works even better than the crappy air stones by the way, is making "spiders" or hoops out of "soaker hose" because you can fit a ring around the bottom of the bucket so the bubbles come from all around. i call kratky lazy because its fire and forget, once a week you have to top off solution and other than that it just sits there, and if only having to deal with your plants once a week is the goal its a great solution. it cant in ANY way compete with dwc though (which is a lot more work with all the ph/ppm testing/adjusting in addition to the electricity) if you are trying to maximize output in a given space.. i dont think it can beat nft, flood and drain, or aero/fog ponics either actually. watch some "hoocho" videos, youll up your game 100 fold. most importantly kratky has some pretty big limitations that dwc doesnt as far as things you can effectively grow in it before it becomes a massive pain in the ass.
@TheAdhdGardener Жыл бұрын
@@megaflux7144 🤦♀️ I'm always about learning. It's how u came off that I didn't like. I didn't use net cups this time. I would like to know the info u said so i CAN improve all I'll look into it. I watch a few hoocho vids but not many cuz I only do hydro during fall n winter. Gonna watch more. As far as neurodivergants go the kratky is yes a more simpler method but it suits many people needs and abilities especially if people are forgetful. The cabbage in the kratky is doing quite well. If course the dwc one is better but the kratky one is def a close second. I switched them all to 5gal darker colored buckets

A bubbler in water only circulates the water for a very slight better water to air O2 exchange at surface ,the bubbles themselves will not impart any O2 to the water of measurable amount, and your headspace for O2 exchange is not adequate. in either, bucket and a bubbler will not have any marked improvement with as small a surface area as you provide in a 2 gallon bucket surface area. bubbles in dwc do not solve issues it the airs space so the roots can take up O2 from the air as it enter you would gain more from an air vent ducted to a small computer fan pushing air in to flow across the roots to supply the roots with O2 and this air flow will do the same surface exchange as a bubbler. The bucket color density will also impart a mismatch in light penetration to the grow nutrient solution and the tops wont seal proper to keep light from possibly causing algae growth which will affect comparison results. Get away from using the pool noodles the chemicals used to make some can hinder plant growth use the full net pot get plant growing grade rock wool like grodan rockwool from amazon or rock wool grow plugs ( not insulation grade rockwool that contains chemicals to stop mold mildew and fungus growth and fire retardants ) the seal the top surface with some painters tape and poke a hole to plant seed. You negate the use of the net pot in way you plants , if you want a support and insist on pool noodle prestart you plants in water cut your pool noodle about an inch thick ring and cut a slit from edge to center , open center slip plant in so roots hang down and use a hole saw to cut a hole in that will hold pool noodle firm in place without crushing root , or get a cork mate cut a slit and a small hole in center to put seedlings in and places in hole in lid or a non toxic organic latex foam Air pumps do not add O2 to the water because of the bubbles. It is the agitation or breaking of the surface tension of the water that adds oxygen To ensure that your plants have enough oxygen to breathe, you need to get bubbles to agitation the surface to dissolve plenty of oxygen in the water. You can use aquarium power heads instead of air pumps todo the same agitation
