EASIEST Way to Care and Propagate African Violets - Streptocarpus sect. saintpaulia - WITH UPDATES

In this episode, I share care tips on the African violet and propagate it in water and in soil, with results (and failure) to show you. Propagation is extremely easy and satisfying with this plant - with just single leaf required. While often misunderstood, the care can be easy as well, as long as you understand their requirements.
There are many cultivars to enjoy in this species. I hope this episode is a stepping stone for you to explore this amazing group of plants! And yes, they flower easily indoors! Which is not a common trait.

When I use to have an office job I kept African Violets in my cubicle, they loved the fluorescent lamp on my desk, they preferred to be root bound which produced tons of flowers. 🌸 Thanks for sharing 😁

I have one type - seems nothing special, just a simple violet one but it was my late grandma's so I keep propagating it and sharing with the world, spreading the love 💜🌿

When I started my plant collection journey in 2020, my husband brought me several African Violet cuttings from his workplace. Fast forward to 2023, I have 6 African Violets. I find them fast growing and easy to propagate. One of them had its leaves eaten by some unknown pest but it survived. It’s interesting that another African violet was right next to it, leaves touching and all, and it had no damage whatsoever. I am not very good at rotating them so they tend to grow to one side, and the petioles are quite long, but the leaves are also very big - perhaps abnormally big in my opinion. But I love them and I consider them some of my easiest care plants. Or maybe they do well for me because I’m growing them in their country of origin - Kenya😊

I propagate my African violets by rooting them in water. As soon as the roots appear, I plant them. That way, the roots can grow properly and the cutting won't rot.

I just started collecting these..the minis ..I live in the US..garden zone 8..I love the flowers but the leaves are the reason I collect them..I have 4 ..one with pink and white leaves, one with mostly white leaves with green veins, one with variegated leaves, and one with green and almost maroon leaves with red under the leaves..I love them and the minis stay so cute and small. They bounce back so fast too..when I was newer I wet the leaves of the white one and the leaves turned brown..I plucked the brown leaves and stuck her in a terrarium for a few weeks and she bounced back with new leaves..don't let the leaves get wet.. especially if they were white.. underwater the plant...or they might get brown and ugly. Yes you make new plants by sticking leaves in soil..I just stick the leaves in a closed terrarium.

Never had one...the leaves look similar to a begonia I have, so they are propagated just like begonias! They sell them in my country but haven't committed to getting one yet!

I love African Violets, and have a collection of different blooms and also different leaf varieties. I have also divided some when the plant gets large and splits. Can you propagate them from a leaf like begonias by just placing a leaf under a small amount of soil. I believe a new plant will grow from the edge of the leaf. Where I live in the US they grow easily in terracotta self watering pots. I have found it hard to locate unusual varieties.

These grow well and flower year around (any time of the year, not usually a year at the time, but at random times) even in Scandinavia (I live in Sweden). I'm interested in knowing if they indeed produce pollen, as I've seen that some beneficials against spider mites/trips can survive on a pollen based diet if there are no bad bugs around, making the beneficials "last" longer. Anyone that knows? Also love your content, subscribed! :)
