Back in the 70's my Mom joined a houseplant club. They send her a file box that looks like a green house and every month she was sent 10 or so cards. Each one was for a different plant. They contained so much info. My Mom passed this down to me (there were 2 boxes). I was having problems with my African Violet, pulled out the card and what do you know!! The card said that these plants do not like cold water! So now I water them with warm water and have beautiful plants! I now have 3 plants because the original plant grew so big!! I don't know if this is new info to a lot of people but it sure was for me!

Are the built in cabinets original as well, because they are a gem! And that cubby!! Be still my heart. To see an original kitchen like that in near original condition is a dream come true. I was mesmerized by that old kitchen area too, and the cubby that Laura flew by in the video. I watched that segment a few times! I think the cubby would be a favorite quiet place for me. HELLO FROM TEXAS - VERY INTERESTING SHOW. LEARNED A LOT. I TRIED THE VIOLETS AT ONE TIME, I'M NOT A FAN OF GROWING THEM, BUT LOVE THEIR BEAUTY. I'VE ALWAYS HAD A GREEN THUMB, AND MY PLANTS LOVE ME.......AND I TALK TO THEM......AND IT'S FUNNY, BECAUSE MY FATHER USED TO TALK TO HIS TREES, PLANTS, ETC., AND THEY GREW SOOOO WELL. I ENJOY YOUR SHOW, VERY CREATIVE AND FILLED WITH JOY. HUGS TO YOUR LITTLE ONES TOO. TAKE CARE, AND BE SAFE, ALL OF YOU - IN THE NAME OF JESUS.

Hi Laura! I especially enjoyed the tutorial on African Violets. I really enjoy them, but haven't had very good luck with them. I usually threw them away when the stem got so long and the lower leaves died off. Now that I know what to do, I will try them again. I love seeing the older part of your house! If not asking too much, would you mind showing us the original part of the house? I think it would be fun to see it. The little nook looks like it may have been a breakfast nook. It looks like it would be a good spot for activities for Benjamin and Samantha Grace. Thank you so much for sharing!

God Morning! Thank you for the African Violet tutorial, it was super informative. My grandmother grew violets and I have carried on the tradition on a small scale. I use clear, clean Soda bottles to root my plants in water. It works very well and no need for Saran. I place them in windows and enjoy watching the roots develop and then the babies.

Hello Laura, because spring is coming, in some areas we do already have it, can you dedicate one video for fertilizers, NPK numbers, explanation of the ratio, how can we test the NPK in the soil and how to add it properly into the soil? I believe you will explain it like a pro. I have asked 5 garden centres and 2 had no idea and 3 said it's not important to add anything just liquid fertilizer. I like slow release fertilizer instead. Thank you for your consideration. 🤘

I know they did some soil tests last year but I don’t think they got a definite answer with the results (they did a couple of different send away tests). I know that they did switch from slow release (espoma flower tone) to a weekly fertilizer for their annual flowers.

Hey Laura...just wanted to say, after seeing your unboxing from mountaincrest...I used your discount code you gave us...I fell in love with the Ric Rac cactus, pepperomia ruby glow and the pepperomia rosso you shared....I I immediately ordered all 3. They arrived today and are gorgeous. I normally NEVER order succulents/cactus during winter because of times in transit during winter. But after seeing your unboxing, I gave it a shot...I'm so glad I did❤ they sent me a bonus plant...it looks like a wee babe echeveria black prince. Lil cold, so I'm allowing them to acclimate to inside temps atm...but pots/soil were ready for their arrival. Thanks so much for doing that video...gave me the confidence I lost on ordering this time of year and introduced me to a new plant vendor❤

I really love older homes. They are usually have such interesting architecture with interesting rooms and interesting closets and such. We bought on and really love it. We did have to insulate it and make a few other changes but we love it. My grandmother had African Violets. I remember her telling me how we had to water them differently than the other plants and very carefully. They always had flowers. So recently I decided that I wanted to try growing some myself. I could not find any Violets near where we live except this sad looking thing that was left at Lowes. It was really bad off. Probably not the best way to start out with African Violets. I bought it though and now a few weeks later it looks fine but so far no flowers. It is under lights but I think I may have put it in a planter that is a tiny bit too large for it. It was the smallest pot that I had. I hate to have to repot it.

I came back to this video because I had 9 AV plants that I grew from propagated leaves!! Checked on them today and they alI grew long necks so I decapitated all of them😢, and potted them up in fresh soil!! I also propagated 32 more leaves in soil, left an inch of stem on each because the longer the stem, the longer it takes to grow babies!! Hopefully they'll sprout babies and I can give some away to family and friends!!❤

I inherited a African Violet and a philodendron from a ex boss a client told me to delute coffee with water and it would make my philodendron leaves a dark green. She was right it was beautiful. So at the same time I shared the coffee water on my African Violet it also loved the coffee water. My clients all ask what I did to the African Violet, it was so big and so beautiful. They couldn't believe that coffee water could do that to a plant.

About a year ago I watched one of your African violet videos and did this very thing. I had also read that if you blow into the plastic bag, the carbon dioxide from your breath is good for the plants. So I took leaves from the same plant, put them in identical pots, next to each other by a window and under identical plastic bags but one I blew into almost every day and one I did not. The difference was astounding in how fast the one I blew into grew new leaves and how much bigger it got. This was a fun easy rewarding project. Now the one that was doing so well has about 30 flowers on it. It still looks better than the one I didn't give the carbon dioxide boost to.

blooms always come to plants that are nice and healthy and in the right conditions. African violets love bright indirect sunlight all day (morning sun if you can provide it is good too!) They can be fertilised once a month with specialist fertiliser which can promote blooms. Having them in a smaller pot is good too! 1/3 the size of the crown of the plant is a good size for the pot as they bloom easier when potbound. Hope this helps!

Love the succulents in the tray. That looks good even if you don’t do anything else with them. My daughter has had some success with African violets. She started out with two plants. Over the last few years, she has propagated the leaves she’s groomed off and has created dozens and dozens of new plants. We now have around 30 plants that seem to be in constant bloom. Plus she’s given away at least that many more plants to friends. (She has only used the outside leaves in her propagation efforts and always directly into soil. And she never covers them with plastic)

I must admit when I saw the subject of today’s video I thought, oh I think she’s already hit on those subjects before so I doubt if I’ll learn anything new. Boy was I wrong! I learned a lot and was really thankful to see you talking about the African violet with the extra growth on some of them. I have an African violet that belonged to my aunts, who is deceased, and I noticed the growth of a new plant the other day. I had no idea what to do. I really want to make sure that I can keep this plant of hers healthy and happy as it reminds me of her every time I water it or it blooms. I swear I learn something new with each new video. Thank you Laura.

Perfect timing on this one Laura ! My daughter in law just brought over a crazy wild happy bean peperomia plant and said HELP !! We have cut it up into 18 little plants and are waiting for them to callous over before putting into new pots . This just reassured me that we are doing it the right way ! Thank you so much for all your videos ! ❤️🤞🌸

Really nice! Love african violets, when I was little my dad had them and didn't let anyone touch them. He had a collection and mom propagated them in water. He doesn't take care of plants anymore.....😔 I will have to groom my succulents when it warms up a bit closer to spring because they are all outside! Hugs🤗💜🤗

So in love with that little cubby! Wish I could’ve seen it a little better! Really appreciated this video. I have a bunch of African violets and did not know the proper way to handle this part of their care. Thanks!

My Mom was the queen of African violets. I used to give her one for Mother’s Day each year. When she passed I took them over. So glad to see this video as I am not the queen of violets and I think mine are struggling. I may need to take mine apart of inspect them to see what needs to be done like you did. Thank you for the all the tips. I may need to do a succulent review as well and get mine repotted and new soil etc.

what a production line and variety of plants.. from succulents to begonias to african violets.. ❤ that begonia is so sweet and pretty, sort of old-fashioned looking... i want one, lol... currently going thru my head trying to figure out where i can put grow lights inside without a cat attacking plants.. and i may have just come up with an idea.. Gardener's Supply Company has that bamboo shelf that can hang on a wall, mmmm... now to find a spot.. lol.. see what you did? lol... i so love your house, too... now i'm on the hunt for a shelf, some begonias, african violets, and more succulents!! thanks for the inspiration!! and 🙂 ❤ thanks for the video!! 🙂 ❤

Do you ever write dates on your tags? Do you keep a planting journal for your different groups of plants, seedlings, and cuttings for both inside and out?

Hey Laura! Great segment on African violets….a much loved houseplant that I’ll always associate with my mom. She used to grow gorgeous African violets and had care tips that I always assumed were “old wives tales”. For instance, she swore by adding an aspirin to the watering can before she watered….she was extremely careful not to get the leaves wet, (so she watered them by putting the water in a saucer under the pot), and she always grew the violets in a North facing window. I must admit she had terrific success so she must have done something right. Thank you for all the great tips and for me, the nostalgic look back at caring for this lovely little plant. 🪴

I have found that the humidity dome is totally optional for propagating the African Violet leaves. I ran and side by side test and was amazed that the results were exactly the same. I noticed when starting in water you get "water roots" which are much more sensitive than roots grown in soil so when potting them up you can lose many. Last year was a total flop for me with begonias, I am still trying to figure out what I was doing wrong. But they are coming back so I will try, try again.
