Edge selection is no longer required, texel density can be set locally, fixed a couple bugs, and added some user preference settings you can customize. Now you can gridify UVs exactly how you want in Autodesk Maya.

Maya did great work on UVs oner the last few years but not seeking out this workflow was a real omission, well done ...super script.

I am so fortunate to have these kinda tools just as I am still at the beginning of my career. I spent hours trying to straighten uvs but looks like I can just press a button with this crap. Thanks for the tutorials

@@malcolm341 Oh no, I bought one of your scripts for Maya named UV unwrapping tool, but actually, I was looking for the Toolbox tool. (I didnt knew you sold both since they seemed so similar) Is there any way I can fix this issue without buying the other one?

Hey i see there lots of really handy and usefull features in your tool scripts! Got a question does they work with Maya 2024 ? at your gumroad saw only mention for up to 2022 and latest maya releases been having several improvements to the aspects i tend to work with, considering getting myself that megapack of yours

@GrezgoT Everything is forward compatible so it should always work on new versions of Maya including 2024. If you see something not working I'm happy to fix the bug, my intent is to keep the tools working with all future versions of Maya.

I saw that video, it’s good for simple shaders but couldn’t figure out how to incorporate a full Arnold shader imported from substance designer using their plugin network creator.

@@Codester-Cody I've never used Substance Designer, if you want, send me the shader network as a Maya file and I'll take a look. In theory it should be just plugging the tri-planar into the right slot of whatever network you have. Send the file to malcolm341@gmail.com

As far as I know NightShade doesn't work with current versions of Maya? Also I thought NightShade uses the tolerence based rectangularization to straighten so a lot of the examples in this video wouldn't work in NightShade because it uses the Maya default straighten UVs and collapses back on itself if you give it a U-shaped shell to gridify?

Hey @malcolm341 !When you say it doesn't work on triangles, do you mean it doesn't work at all? or will it try and figure it out a bit?

@IamThatGuy_ It will sew the edges together creating a garbled mess in almost all cases if you use it on any triangulated mesh unfortunately.

Love your scripts! Is there any way to select a group of UV Shells and make them act like one? Kinda like what your grouping system does, but without stacking them in the Layout process. I oftentimes find myself with several parts of a mesh unwrapped together for better readability(dont really care too much about optimization in VFX). And I would love to be able to UV Layout all my "groups" without the UV Layout process splitting everything again xD.

I haven't figured out a way to do that in Maya. As a work around I use the pack selected to pivot and layout up and layout right found in both the UDIM packing toolbox and the UV mapping toolbox. Here's a video, it's not exactly what you want, but much faster than doing things by hand kzbin.info/www/bejne/f6GmanyvlN2NqqM

I was trying it out for a model of mine. It has some bandages around his arm, so cylindrical shapes. When I unwrap one piece it works fine. But then when I select the next piece and run the tool it messes up the first piece. Doesn't happen all the time. Another problem I have is that the recUV does not work if I have a section of the cylinder going from 2 to 4 faces, still all faces quads. You probably know what topology I mean, if you google 2 to 4 topology there is a picture of it.

The 2 to 4 topology makes sense it won't work because that diagonal configuration can't be converted into a grid without collapsing some of the edges and leaving no UV space. If you gridify it in 2 sections it will work though. For the cylindrical bandages it sounds like there is a left over selection active when you run the tool the second time and it messes up the first piece which might mean it's silently crashing. @@malcolm341 the 2 to 4 makes sense. Thought it will work since the model shown here looks so wild and mine is rather simple :D Knowing to seperate such pieces will make it easier then since it works really well with the manual seam selection. I'll let a screen record running next time I'm working on this model. If the problem happens again I'll send you a short clip of it 👍

Hiya, I have a question regarding compatibility of yours scripts. I'm planning to buy the mega pack from gumroad but I don't know if they would work with Maya 2023 / Maya 2024?

@zurovskyvision Hi, they work in all versions of Maya from 2017 onward. I've written them in Mel so they're forward compatible with new versions of Maya because Mel rarely gets updated by Autodesk, but Python seems to get updated with every release of Maya so Python scripts are often not compatible with new versions of Maya. They should already work in 2025 actually, but if something breaks I usually fix any bugs within a couple of days of getting a bug report from a customer.

Is there anyway I can change polygon backface color from being pure black? It's very annoying

I'm not sure you can pick a colour, but you can make it transparent which is what I use so it's easier to see. In the viewport select Shading> and check backface culling and the black will go away.

Hi, I used your script for a while and it worked perfectly fine but recently whenever I try to recUV it stiches the seams of the island and gives me a stitched rectangulated uv island do you know why is it stitching the uv islands? the gridUV does the same stiching the seams and then creating a rectangle island

@dartimuspl I'm not sure what you mean, can you send me a screenshot of the issue and the model you're using so I can test it to malcolm341@gmail.com My guess would be that you have some triangles selected or the automatic border edge is not able to find a straight line like shown in the video at this time stamp kzbin.info/www/bejne/fHqahq2GpMSpp7s Try defining a manual border edge, or select a smaller subsection of the area you're trying to rectangularize until you find the problem area.

I have downloaded the Maya again and it fixed the problem. Maybe it was an outdated Maya that was causing this error, and unfortunately now I can't do a screenshot of the error as it has been fixed if it occurs again I will send you the screenshot right away. Yes everything is still available, Gumroad should be working fine? Open the page you want to purchase from and then type the price into the name a fair price section and click I want this. Note that you must pay the minimum preset I have there which is the light grey number before you start typing. @malcolm341 gumroad for your script wasn't allowing me to add to cart. Tried on multiple devices and through multiple browsers. I selected another product on gumroad and that allowed me to add. Just wasn't allowed to add yours to my cart. I have purchased other products through gumroad before and had no problem. I did endup purchasing through artstation. Thanks. Very useful scripts.

@@Aussiematt1976 I just gave it a try and it seems to be working, but I did notice the add to cart at the top of the page doesn't work because you first have to type the price to pay before clicking add to cart so I was a bit confused at first.
