Wow that actually helped. For a minute I was thinking it can’t be this simple and complex at the same time haha but it really is and really isn’t. You were using G Ionian for all the chords played but because you were changing the chord and the starting and ending note the mode was being played on it changed the whole sound. I can’t believe how simple it was. It goes to show that it’s the chords being played and the tonal center that dictates the mode that works best.

Finally, a clear & easy-to-understand explanation of how to get started with modes. I've watched other videos, but they try to put too much information out all at once. Of course, those videos aren't necessarily bad because of this, but I feel a lot of players want to take it in smaller bites. I like how you keep a slow pace with each bit of info getting enough time for the viewer to let it sink in, before you go on to more info. I've played a long time, & have stumbled into some accidental modal playing at various times, but I knew I'd only scratched the surface, & worse, I felt like I didn't really know WTF I was doing. Your video felt to me like a great place to get started, and now some of the info in other videos makes more sense. Thanks, I liked & subscribed.

Thank you Marty. I've been playing guitar for 40 plus years, mostly Rhythm with a few self taught, thru observation riffs. I've reached the point where I must learn basic scales to move on and add some spice to my playing. This video has gotten me started to learn basic scales to practice and hopefully I can move on from there. Keep on Jamming and teaching. And THANK YOU SOOO MUCH.

I’ve been dabbling in guitar for awhile now, and I’ve heard the concept of modes being based off the major scale but beyond that fact it all seemed like some nebulous cloud. That is, until I watched this video. I finally just had that light bulb moment in the land of music theory! Thanks for the video.
@stanphillips72773 жыл бұрын
Wow Marty, I used to play hours a day until I plateaued after I started to be able to jam in minor pentatonic. I'm 49 and that was at 16 after 6 months of playing constantly. I was jamming blues improv and stopped learning outside of songs. I watch you , Beato, Tomo, Rob Baker and everyone else in the community, Chris Buck etc ... this is really the first time I feel I'm starting to get it. Modes and "CAGED" have been on the verge of making sense but this video feels like I'm starting to understand things. It's really the first time I've actually wrapped my head around the idea of modes and it just seems a little simpler than I thought. The major scale I knew so just the root changes the mode? I am learning even though my guitar is in it's case but I may be able to play later and I'm on to something, kind of a light bulb moment for me. Thanks for laying it out, turns out I've been playing ionian and didn't know it, aolian and mixolidean became clear and I think caged and the circle of 5ths is clearing up based on this video. I gotta thank you man! I'm in a nursing home so I need help getting set-up and they're short staffed today so I don't know if I can play. I'm only 49 but the Dr says I've got the lungs of a 90 year old but!! That was before I quit smoking cigarettes so I feel alright. Emphasema and a back surgery and I wound up here, which is a blessing cause it was getting harder every day to take care of myself and my insurance wouldn't cover assisted living or nursing homes until a Dr signed me up for Hospice care based on the shape I was in. I'm doing better than 99% of the world, all my needs are met and more. I bought a Strat Squier Affinity SSS and Fender Mustang Lt25 modeling amp and I intend to walk again and become a better guitar player. You're helping me with the latter, and if I start sitting in a chair I'll be able to practice daily and I've got nothing but time and I love the instrument so little breakthroughs like this (and without a guitar in hand) I feel I'm understanding the instrument more and more all the time. So thanks man for the lesson, I've never had it described as simply and clearly as that. Nice goin" Marty, I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that we appreciate you man!✌️☮️🎸🙏
