Hey Marty. My dad is very ill. He’s an old rocker. I’m going to a festival where a friend is playing in a band and he offered to let me come up and play if my dad is well enough to sing. I asked my dad what song he would do and he said Larry Graham’s “One In A Million” Odd for a rocker but he loves R&B. Huge request here!! In the next week can you post simple chord progressions for that song??? I know it’s a big ask. I’m hoping to make a lasting memory. I struggle to read music, but one play through of your tutorials and I got it. I used someone else’s video to learn. When I play the song through my PA and go through the chord progressions, it sound horrible. If you can help THANK YOU!!!

MODES! Ahhh!!!! This is when I stopped learning theory when I was a teenager. Daunting, elusive subject!!!! Now, I’m coming back to it at 40 and teaching my 10-year old son to play (bought him his first guitar this year). Can’t wait for the chance to look at your class, Marty. (Love that Gibson, btw-been dreaming of one for some time now). Thanks for all you do!!!

@bradt54143 жыл бұрын
That seems to be me too. I tend to jump into things far beyond my skills etc. But I think that's what keeps us from getting bored.
@Nakkiteline9 ай бұрын
i think it's good to dabble with modes early on, but learning all the positions of the pentatonic scale somewhat well before really diving to modes, gives you a great base to build other scales on! the five positions are actually surprisingly easy to learn, i learned the basic root on the lowest string position and the one above that first, then after i knew those by heart i added the others. what really made me learn them all well, was to learn them 3 strings at a time. so i started with Am pentatonic, and figured out all the notes in all 5 positions, on the G, B and E strings first. played them up and down for couple days. then i did the same for the E, A and D strings, then i tied them together in a day and boom, a week after i could play every position! i continued to go through them couple times a day every day and now about two months after, i can actually move the scales to pretty much whatever root note i want and the shapes are there! this 3 strings at a time up and down method ensured, that i got more repetitions on all the positions, rather than just trying to clumsily stumble my way through the full 6 string scale patterns. it was way easier, and i mean waaay easier to lock the shapes to memory 3 strings at a time rather than 6 strings at a time, i learned 3 positions just as fast as i learned the first one which i approached by trying to learn the whole shape at once. next stop is trying to do the same to major and minor scales and modes is something i want to try to understand aswell now. sry for long winded text, hope this helps somebody at all and feel free to ask if something's incoherent, i try to clear up on that. 2nd language so hard to explain concepts sometimes 😁 cheers!

Marty, when Rick Beato talks about modes, it goes over my head so fast I get the urge to reflexively duck! But my bet is that you make modes easy, natural and useful! Thanks for your efforts, man! You are my favorite guitar teacher! :)
@bubbhajay2027Ай бұрын
Marty, firstly I want to say I love all your videos, you're a natural born teacher and I've learned so much from watching your guitar tutorials and lessons, but this simple demonstration has taken all the theory and jargon and put it in a way I can see and hear, You just gave me that eureka moment, Where everything I've been struggling to comprehend in my head just click, Thank you so much for this beautiful crash course I look forward to learning, Now I actually understand what is going on and how the modes are related, Yesterday I learned the simple g blues scale 3 6 3 4 5 3 5 I also learned c Lydian 8 10 7 9 10 7 9 10 7 9 11 8 10 7 8 But this simple video made everything make so much sense I've been watching countless videos on theory and modes and scales So many people breaking it down in their own way But by simply playing over the route note and showing us the different tones you took weeks of learning and made it click and stick Thank you once again good sir Much love from Ireland 💚😎

My first dive into modes (not too long ago) was through a site that attempted to explain it using the C note as the root for each mode (C Ionian, C Dorian, etc.). It occurred to me pretty quickly that this was not the best way to think about modes, and that it made more sense to look at them in exactly the manner you went through in this video, using sequentially the notes of the C major scale as the roots (C Ionian, D Dorian, etc.). I have been practicing a little with it by running through each scale, followed by playing the 1-4-5-1 chord progression for that mode. The tough part for me occurs in the modes where one of those chords is B dim, as I am not used to using diminished chords, but that is one more thing that I am getting by doing this routine. I have not really developed the technique of soloing over chords yet, which would give me another way to work with it.

My apologies for the length of my comment, but I hope you will read the entire thing. I’d love to win any of your courses - they would not be wasted on me. I had a 2003 accident that caused quite a few medical issues for many years, but my health took a nosedive during the end of 2018. I’ve been homebound since 2019 for medical reasons. During the pandemic, I picked up a guitar I had laying around for a few years thanks to the Fender Play and Gibson trials inspiring me to try. Learning guitar has become physical, occupational, cognitive (I also have a TBI), and recreational therapy all rolled into one! I practice nearly daily (I can’t if I’m too sick), and I even get my service dog involved! He now knows how to strum on command, lol. I’m also looking for a donated electric guitar, smart amp, and basic equipment/tools to get started with using an electric guitar. The acoustic guitar I have been using is an amazing instrument and got me this far, but it’s become literally too painful to play at this juncture. I developed a ton of weakness and dexterity issues from a surprise major surgery and being bed ridden during a 2.5 month straight hospitalization and 6 months in a rehab facility between 2018-2019. The guitar I have been using was purchased during 2018 and was perfect for me before my health tanked. I think I’ll eventually be able to play it better as my hands get stronger and more flexible with practice - but at the current stage in my guitar journey, an electric with a thinner neck profile and strings would really help my playing along, especially where power chords, bends, trills, other types chords, etc. are concerned. I’m afraid I won’t be able to keep playing this acoustic guitar because the pain is starting to get in the way. It would suck to be forced to stop something I’ve come to love because I can’t afford to buy an electric guitar and the equipment/tools that are needed to go with it. I’ve tried contacting Gibson directly several times since last year (hoping to get a Gibson or Epiphone) and was told each time that they’d love to assist me, but they’ve been too swamped with donation requests during the pandemic. I also tried writing to several well known KZbinrs, hoping they’d have connections to manufacturers and/or music shops - unfortunately, not a single one of those KZbinrs bothered to reply to me, which was a huge bummer even if the answer was no. I’m hoping that you’ll reply either way and be kind enough to assist me with getting the instrument/tools I need even if I don’t win lessons from you. I would deeply appreciate anything you can do. I watch your channel religiously, which has been very helpful in enhancing my progress and appreciate everything you do. It’s difficult to ask for help, but guitar has become a really central part of my life (and my service dog’s too!) and it would suck to have to give that up being that it provides me with physical and cognitive exercise, plus gives me and my service dog something to enjoy and bond over while I’m cooped up in my apartment. Please let me know either way whether you have any connections - if you DM me on Twitter @MashaT22, we can talk more there or I can provide you with my email. I appreciate your taking the time to read this and would be happy to share more of my story with you or answer any questions about the type of guitar that would be appropriate for my disabilities, as well as the sort of amp I’m hoping to get. Thanks, Marty!
