I've installed a bunch of these kits but I still love coming across new videos, as I learn new tips and tricks. If you're modding your own shell there's an easy way to tell if you've trimmed enough of the screen bezel. Take the glass screen lens and hold it into place against your shell. Hold the case up to the light and look through the shell from the outside of the case. You'll see a shadow if there's parts of the shell that still need to be removed. Also, I love the tip about removing a portion of the liner. I HATE adhesives too because I get bored of shells and like to swap things around. I like the tip about partially removing the liner; I used a dab or 2 of hot glue before. Great video!

THIS IS SO AWESOME! I never had a GBA except briefly had an SP. I had the original GameBoy growing up, had to get the LightBoy to see it but it had better visibility in normal light than the non-lit GBA. My nephew, now 21 really got into Nintendo retro (kinda cool as my kids could care less). I bought one of his old original GBAs , fits better in my large hands, did this mod with newer version of this LCD and Minish Cap custom shell (thanks to Tito) and it looks so good in person. IMPORTANT: Follow the placement of the solder connections on the trigger buttons. I originally connected the wire for the R trigger to the right pad. It causes the Select button to raise the brightness, Select-Left to lower bright ness and Select-Right or just Right does nothing. After swapping, everything works great!

@@MachoNachoProductions should just require soldering the wireless charging coil to pins 3 and 6 in an SP. That's actually not too terrible of a mod. Worst part would be figuring out where to put the coil, but I think there's a good bit of room behind the screen when you do an IPS mod.

I like the comparison to the AGS-101, the only issue is the cameras always pick up these small differences better than we can see them, making it look like the IPS is worlds better when in reality the 101 is good enough. The real conclusion is whether you already have an AGS-101 screen or not. If you don’t, then IPS all the way - but I don’t think it’s worth the upgrade if you already have a 101 SP or modded in already....

Just to be clear, a lot of GBA games exploit the LCD ghosting to fake transparency (F-Zero map and shadows) or dithering (Golden Sun world map), it always annoys me nobody test those games when reviewing these panels. Using high refresh rate screens which completely change the look of games up to adding artifacts in some cases is not, in my opinion, a better experience than a buggy emulator.
@MachoNachoProductions4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info! I didn't know that the GBA used ghosting to fake transparency, I though it was just older consoles such as the Genesis that did that since it wasn't capable through hardware. I'll be sure to use some of those games in future tests! Thanks again! Cheers!

This screen uses an FPGA with a framebuffer. Has anyone tested the lag/latency? There would be at least some lag due to that. Also, does anyone know if this is a 12 o'clock screen, like the GBC IPS V2? That means that it is designed for looking up at it, such that there are slight color distortions when looking at it straight on, and more so from above.

Hi Tito. Do you know why the IPS V2 screen is slightly larger than the GBA original? I'm obviously a layman, but to me the IPS V2 screen in the modded GBA I ordered seems to have a lower resolution than the standard AGS 101 I have for my GBA SP. It's kind of like 3DS games being upscaled on a 3DS XL, making them look less sharp.
@MachoNachoProductions3 жыл бұрын
Great question! It’s slightly larger because the IPs screen integer scaling the original image (4 pixels to every 2 original pixel). The IPs screen has much smaller pixels than the original. The 4 smaller pixels combine to become just slightly larger than the original pixel making the screen size just a bit larger. I hope that made sense. Cheers!

Nice video! I'm super new to this stuff, but I'm really tempted to buy Retromodding's kit. Although the fact that no wires come with it confused me, so I'll have a look at the wires in the description. I've also only soldiered a few times in my life, so I'm not too confident in that. Any cheap soldering kit I should buy? Also, do you know of a good tutorial I should follow to understand the basics of soldering again? Anyway, thanks for the video man! I loved how well made it is!

I will be getting my custom shell in tomorrow, and I have all my other necessary parts. I was wondering, is the viewable screen size larger than the regular advance? I bought a glass screen lens from eBay, but am now seeing that Retro Modding is selling them as well (without a logo, which I would prefer to have the logo). Is the lens you used the same as a stock lens in terms of size? I don't want to cut off some of the screen using this lens if it is, in fact, smaller in viewing area. Thanks.
@MachoNachoProductions4 жыл бұрын
Hi Breanna! So I bought my kit a while ago (last year) from Retro Modding and it actually came with the screen lens. I think that the LCD displays an image that is just ever so slightly larger than the OEM lens. I think you should be fine for the most part but if you want a lens that doesn't cover a small part of the LCD you can purchase the Retro Modding one (with no logo) or you can go on eBay or AliExpress and get a glass screen lens designed for the V2 IPS. Make sure its for the V2 because the V1 was an off center lens design. I hope this helps and best of luck on your build! If you have any questions, just reach out. Cheers!

Any issues with the right bumper? Everything else is great except rb is flatter than lb. need to trim?
@MachoNachoProductions4 жыл бұрын
You may have shaved too much plastic material near the right bumper. Look at where the metal spring sits. It should be pushing against a plastic wall. If you shaved that plastic wall while trimming to fit the IPS panel the trigger may not function correctly. To fix this you may need to glue in a pice of plastic so that the metal spring has something to push against. I hope that helps. Best of luck! Cheers!

HI there, great videos! as far as I know Funnyplaying IPS has a 10 level brightness if you solder the wires do you know which is the default brightness if I skip to solder the 3 wires to the board? Has same/more/less brightness compare to the AGS-101 screen (GBA SP) when default “NORMAL” bright is set?

If you don’t solder then it is half brightness. I have never soldered before but am trying to determine how difficult it would be to solder that

Hi all, after my IPS mod i'm experiencing this issue where the select button works as it was the start button. Is it normal after I soldered TP2 for brightness control or not? Someone ever had such problem as well? Thanks in advance
@amaiorano2 жыл бұрын
I know it's 10 months later, but that sounds like you may have bridged the select pad with the start pad, either because part of the wire is touching both pads, or you got solder bridging across. Use a multimeter to make sure they aren't bridged.
