Easiest way to replace cracked broken shifter knob on a volvo without removing center console

Here is a quick video showing cracked shifter knob which is a common problem on most volvos 2014 and newer, it is very easy to replace it without removing center console,

Did mine yesterday so I will leave some extra info for everyone: Yes the knob pulls straight up after disconnecting the power cable and turning the shroud 90 degrees and pulling down the top of the leather as in the video... However, the leather around the shifter is sealed and attached to a plastic housing inside the center console. Inside that sealed housing the power cable runs through a plastic loop that keeps the cord away from the shifter(they supply a new loop with the genuine shifter). Its very difficult to use this string technique and be able to get the plugs through this plastic loop. I would recommend removing the dash center 6 torx25 screws but firstly removing the frame around the display needs a plastic pry bar and is secured in very well so be careful. After you take the center main dash panel off and unplug it, the sealed leather shroud box is removed by releasing the 2 small retaining wires on the base of the box. Use a flat head screw driver to open the clips on the box and feed the new cable through it and seal it back together. Push new knob down onto shifter and reattach the sealed box retaining wires. At this point you have full access to feed the cable back through and put it all back together. The arm rest storage compartment does not need to be removed and also, use a long flat blade screwdriver to disconnect the small power connector and unplug the battery first just in case. Good luck.

Arggh! I'm having the same shifter delivered next week. Is there any way you'd be willing to add a quick video on how you did yours? I have a 2016 S80 and don't want to break anything. It would have been nice if this guy would have told you which connection it is when he's showing the inside of the console. If you can't that's okay too. Appreciate the above notes. Thank you.

Was having trouble during the reinstall step as the string was getting hung up when trying to pull the new cable through. The secret was wrapping the string in electrical tape to give it more structure and it pulled through just fine.

To actually get the shifter off, did you just pull straight up? No twist, button depressed? I have a lever that has come out of mine, it doesn't seem broke at all, it just came out while I was trying to remove a string from a mask that got caught up inside the button. I think if I can get it off i can get the lever placed back in position. Thanks

Don't replace, repair it. Tape off the shifter knob and use a razor knife to cut the masking tape in the depression between the metal surround and the cracked plastic piece. Begin sanding with 500 grit, then 1000 grit and finish with 3000 grit to remove as much of the cracking you can.. Clean with alcohol and spray with a clear gloss polyurethane I purchased from Home Depot. Results are as new for about $20.

You don't have to all that just take of the head of the shifter just the top pull of he dase not no what his doing

Haha wtf.. You can pry only the cracked glass off and replace without touching anything else.. Takes LITERALLY 30 seconds..
