This is the first episode of the series I will be making about how to use commands and/or a data pack in order to create your own custom items in Minecraft 1.14 and higher.
This first part will go through how to choose what item to use as your base item, and also how to use mcstacker.net to create your item with the proper item tags.
The second episode will be about how to give the custom items their special abilities.

Hey Timber Forge I'm neurodivergent with not insignificant auditory processing issues, so many youtube tutorials are nearly impossible for me to watch. Yours are very easy to parse, follow, and understand. I wanted to thank you for taking the time to make your tutorials like this, with excellent planning, a script, no tangents, and clear, well-pronounced speech with no fuzz. This playlist is a treasure in regards to how tf to custom item, and taught me everything I needed to know. Very cool. Assuming that the player is in survival, command blocks work as a good stackable item to use for custom models since it can't be placed.

huh, sounds like a great way to introduce a new form of currency to a server. Can trade a stack of emerald blocks for 1 new item, based on an emerald or something, that can later be used in custom villager shops as payment method. I might just do this. EDIT: and said shop is complete. For a shulker's worth of emerald blocks, people can now buy a custom 4 by 5 painting made out of maps, with the 20 glow item frames to put the maps in, all neatly packed up in a custom shulker, that's named to what's on the painting inside. Currently 6 4x5 painting, and 1 little 2x2, but if I remove any not necessary characters and all, my command is still 14341 characters, and that kinda makes me wonder, just how many paintings can I fit into 1 shop, before going past the 32500 character command length limit. EDIT 2: I've been ranting too much, and didn't even say what a great idea it is to add a custom tag to the item, so it can be new and unique. Thank you very much for bringing this to my attention, this opens up new prospects for my custom villager army. Even if the one with ~70k character's worth of code was too long to spawn, so I had to split his trades up.

Base Item From existing Items: Sword(Light Saber), Feuerzeug, Hoe, Sheers(sheering) If not from existing Items: Bow(Entity released from your Item), Fishing Rod(Same as Bow), Carrot on a stick(Detect right clicks), Snowball(Throw) Placeable Block: Spawn Egg(Detect where entity, kill and summone block, Armor Stand(places block) Generic Item: Gunpowder, Stick ?. Value (if you dont know what Item to use Item worth less then what it is made of Number(Stack) 2. Give the Item(35462) 1. McStacker.net - /give - giveItem - Item - Name, Value (= Name of the Item) - unbreakable - CustomModelData(for Ressource Pack) - CustomTag (for Accessing The Item, need an :1b at the end)(f.e. Strombreaker:1b) - Hide Flags - Enchantments 2. Copy the command into the command Block and activate to get your item.

Fyi to everyone whos command didnt work, If your trying to make an item with spaces in the name. In custom Tags you would want to put"_" Where the spaces would be. For example. "The Lava Sword:1b" Should Be "The_Lava_Sword:1b"

Honestly that probably won’t be a thing, but you could kind of add a menu of your items by having your data pack come with a tellraw chat or book menu when it loads in.

So, when picking an item, what would be the best for, say, a music disc? My friend wanted me to learn this stuff so we can add some more music discs to the game.

You might be able to literally use a music disc, but that approach might take longer to make. You might be able to detect if the player used the disc, and detect the nbt of the item being held,(maybe with a delay like the food video) and then play the custom sounds. It might be easier and cooler though to just make your own custom jukebox that plays the music if a disc is thrown on it. Kind of like the item drop crafting video, but detect the custom block’s entity rather than other ingredients.

Great video! Is there a reason you set up the damage dealt by the item with sharpness instead of using attribute modifiers or is it just preference?

I wanted the glowing effect for the axe, so I might as well just use sharpness. Depends on the item, if its a fantasy type item I like having the enchantments and stuff.

Note: for modifiers, you can have 2 billion armour/attack damage and more. The only enchantments you need is maybe knockback, fire aspect, but not sharpness.

I was trying to do that by linking motion and it was a pain in the ass and couldn’t get it to work properly, maybe there’s a simpler way that I overlooked cause that happens sometimes.

Your example uses the iron nugget, but this would mean that auto filling recipes using the crafting book does actually fill in those custom items as well. Did you manage to somehow prevent this? Or is that something that is just not preventable? I thought about using the barrier block but sadly it can be placed in survival...

Yeah it still can be used for crafting. I make sure to choose an item that is of less value than the crafting components do there wouldn’t be a point in using it for crafting. I think there are some other useless items you could use like enchanted books and items that cant be crafted into other stuff.

Does the value matter if they can't use the item for its original purpose though? Your heat round might be an iron nugget at its base, but does that mean you can combine 9 of them to make iron?

this isnt a datapack. its a command block. similar, but not the same. you never actually showed how to make a datapack. its being REALLY hard to figure out how. this did help a lot though, and now i have a model that ive put in game and i know how to grant the player custom items. this was a great place 4 me 2 start learning and dip my toes

I have data pack tutorials, i used command blocks so people can understand without first making a data pack. If you filly understand this video and fully understand how to make a data pack in the first place, this tutorial works for data packs. I have a separate video for making the data pack, this was just focused on the concepts for custom items.

theres a way to make non enchanted items look enchanted but i dont know any way to make an item look normal you can however change the attributes using nbt tags to deal extra damage or whatever without enchantments you can also make them have infinite durability which is something good for *bedrock tools*

Yeah, just copy paste the command that would have spawned the item, and replace the summon item with a summon lightning command, and make sure that command is before the command that summons the item.
