Thank you so much for posting this video! One of my friends in my Facebook Garden group gave me a bowl full of variegated ice plant cuttings. I thought they would root in water but now I realize they have to go and soil. I'm glad I realized that before it gets much colder. By the way I recommend using chopsticks to help with planting small items.

@@JaRule6 my pleasure! Depending on if you guys get harsh winters, you may need to root your cuttings inside, under a lamp. Delosperma is a desert plant so thrives in heat. Right now, mine (in zone 7) are dormant. So if I took cuttings, they wouldn’t root outside.. you can bring them inside, in a pot, under a lamp, in a warm spot. Treat it like the succulent it is, and don’t water too much. They hate to be wet all the time. I’ve never rooted them inside so that’s just what I would do if I were giving it a go. Good luck 👍 And yes! I love making a hole with chopsticks if the stem is soft. The ones in the video were stiff, so I could just push them down.

I just trimmed back 20 year old ice plants for the first time around my pool in AZ. What a job that was! But I have hundreds of little cuttings. I'm gonna give it a go!

That’s fantastic! Do give us an update on how it goes. I’d love to know how easy it is to propagate in the Arizona heat. I’m thinking they will do just fine, considering they are made for that climate. Remember to keep them in the shade till they root in 👍 good luck!

Thank you so much for explaining prorogation so well! I bought an ice plant and broke a pretty big limb off when planting it outside. I now have those in a little pot and hope to have a whole new plant to plant.

I love happy accidents, don’t you? It makes me so happy to have helped you turn that broken piece into a whole new plant 😊 Once this one roots, you’ll have two plants next year to take cuttings from and get 4 new plants 😁 yay! 🙌🎊🥳

Just discovered this plant on a walk today, and got a small cutting...very helpful video, I Thank You! I have a tiered planter on my porch, and will work it in onto one of the levels in a container, visually this plant it is very nice, it is a white/light pink color...the other tiers have various color of geranium, and a couple of other ice plants. Learning to propagate, my Mum got me into it, she has a green thumb, and now I am enjoying learning...I may seek a couple additional colors of Delosperma...so much fun...Cheers!!

Did you make sure to put some in a shaded spot for insurance? Depending on how mild your summers are, sometimes they do root when stuck straight in the dirt, in the sun, but they also have a chance of all dying if the amount of sun you get is more intense. I’d try some in pots in a shaded spot just in case. Hope that made sense 😊 good luck!

Thanks for watching! Ask and ye shall receive!😄 Here’s an update I did a month ago. It’s grown a bit since then but not much. I’m planning to do an update at the end of the growing season and then again in spring so those that are interested can follow the progress 😊 hope you can come back to check it out. I did an update short, about a month after I did these. I’ll provide a link but I think I have to have more subscribers or something before I’m allowed to post clickable links in comments. If it doesn’t work, just scroll through my shorts section and you’ll see the title “Update: ice plant propagation 100% success rate”. It didn’t spread a crazy amount Bec they were such tiny cuttings. But I’m expecting them to take off this coming growing season. I’ll do another update when they fill in 😊 thanks for watching kzbin.info_iIgHka2mZc?si=tIEWBFsaeIG8Hv0E

Thank you this is very helpful. Can you please recommend an internet mail order place to buy these plants?
@Garden-Oasis
@Garden-Oasis 6 ай бұрын
If you’re in the US, any garden center has them at this time of year. I’d check Lowe’s or Home Depot first as you might get lucky and come across a sale. But if you need to order by mail, then google it. Google will take your location into account and give you the best option for you. Just Google “Delosperma ice plant” and click the “shopping” section. 😊Good luck! 👍

Here in south Florida it dies off eventually if planted in all-day sun. It’s much longer lived here when planted in morning sun with afternoon shade. Same here with portulaca aka “rock-rose”. I have some annual rock-roses that I’ve had for years that only receive direct sun until around noon.
@Garden-Oasis
@Garden-Oasis 8 ай бұрын
Yes you’re absolutely correct. Thats usually the case with things that are “full sun” in our area. In the heat of the Florida sun, they need to be in some shade. Same thing with things that are full sun from zone 3-7. In my zone 7 they need to be in part shade because we are on the outer edge of what the plant can tolerate. Great observation 👍

Question, I live in nc, & have Ice plants in planters. Should I take them indoors in the winter? Or what do you suggest?
@Garden-Oasis
@Garden-Oasis 5 ай бұрын
No, not at all. Ice plants are hardy down to zone 5. You don’t have to do anything where you are. It will survive your winter just fine, even if you have it in a pot. I have some in a pot and some in the ground, both ways work. It will go dormant just like all the other plants and wake up in the spring.

Is it possible to root them from single leaves like other succulents? Or does it need the branch?
@Garden-Oasis
@Garden-Oasis Жыл бұрын
Yes but I wouldn’t recommend it. It takes a looong time to grow from leaves. When you first root it, the leaf only has enough energy to make a tiny plant the size of an pencil eraser. Then you have to wait for that to grow before it’ll flower for you. Better to do a branch that will root and grow faster, so you can start enjoying it faster.. lol all that to say, yes it will, but you’ll need more patience than I have 😅

New subscriber here. Where are you gardening and what zone is it. I planted a number of ice plants last year and they have spread beautifully. I think I will take some cuttings to plant in other areas of the yard. Is there a best time of year to do that, I am in a zone 5b in Colorado where it can get very hot and dry in the Summer and very cold in the winter
@Garden-Oasis
@Garden-Oasis 7 ай бұрын
I’m in zone 7a. You’re in luck because late spring to summer is the best time to take the cuttings. If you take them now, they will have rooted by Fall. Just propagate them into some pots that you can move around, in case you need to move them (because of this heat wave and it’s not even the hottest part of summer yet). But you should be fine if you plant them in shade and keep them watered. Good luck!

Yes. Anything with a flower will attract bees and butterflies because they want the nectar inside. Your bees and butterflies will love this and be grateful to you for providing such a tasty meal.
