Really encouraging to buy certain plants that you love; propagate and transplant or gift. I did a whole bunch of citronella (mosquito plant)cuttings a few years ago and gave as gifts. The other benefits I noticed was it makes the stems stronger and the plant bushes out. It also keeps it from getting leggy. It is considered a annual In my climate so I found they overwinter in my garage on the side of my window where it isn’t getting direct sunlight. I watered every 3 weeks to keep moist and take them out in the spring once overnight temps are in the 40’s I do this with all my annuals: geraniums, cannas, mountain euphorbias. They look a bit rough because they are basically hibernating, just clean them up as you would in your flowerbeds by using the 3 D’s method ( Damaged, Diseased, Dead) .

Nursery owner here. The reality is that most people buying plants are either landscapers who need many plants immediately, or people just casually find some stuff they find cool. If you need a few of a plant and can wait, definitely go with propogating.

Ok guys I did this and now have three free tomato plants : Tomato plants have one main stalk and at the very bottom when usually two more grow as close to the main stalk as possible pop the other ones off and put the end of the stem in water. A week later itll have roots. Let the stem get several roots and plant after the heat for the day has cooled (after 5/6pm) plant them in pots in a partially shaded area to let them get acclimated to the heat and slowly move them in the sun.

Aloha from Hawaii. Love your energetic videos. I retired a few months ago and have combed KZbin for inspiration. You are one of those people. This video has inspired me to try to propagate the few plants in my yard. I’m in zone 12b and my part of the island is the drier side and we are experiencing drought. I wish I could get some of the plants you mentioned in your other videos but finding a grower who can ship here is not easy. Home Depot and Lowes are our biggest suppliers. Take care and keep making your wonderful videos.

I have propagated many potho's using only 1 leaf and 1 node. Leaving just about an 1/8-1/4" stem on either side of the node. Put in water (changing water every couple of days) plant when roots are about 2-3". Works great!

OMG! THANK YOU! You told us one thing in this video that I have LITERALLY NEVER heard mentioned in the hundreds (literally) of propagation videos I have watched. Lightbulb moment for me was when you said that you have to maintain the moisture in the leaves because there are no roots to draw up the moisture. I had always assumed that the water transpired through the stem…couldn’t understand why “misting” was a thing… Goes to show that sometimes the mistake you are making is in the fundamentals!

This is one of the countless skills that any nation that wishes to enjoy a safe, producrive place in the world needs it's people to have. Nobody can know it all but bad things happen to nations and the collective local knowlege of the people and their natural resillience is that one cutting or cold stratified seed that can reestablish it's soul.

After going to the nursery and seeing plants that cost $40-100... I have started cloning plants. It's actually really easy to do. You really just need to cut off a tip, pull off most of the leaves and I like to add a growth hormone (optional) and stick it in some soil. Done.
