Thanks. I used to chuck them away all the time, they can be quite cheap. But I use a few more carbide bits these days and that would just cost too much. Glad it helped.

The approach angle should be 45 degrees to the grinding surface. That will give a drill tip angle of 135 degrees for metal. Use 30 degrees for wood bits to give a pointier tip angle of 120 degrees

I worked for ole boy & could run streams of metal 2- 3 inches long when drilling just as easily sharpen the bits less than a min. which I struggled with Duane reached in his pocket pulled out two nickles held them next to each other ( like the nuts ) told that was angle I was looking for Duane I still struggle with it & have not mastered it ( but the lesson lived on ) in my defense at the time I didnt have two nickles two rub together

Nice trick with the nuts. I like to sharpen them on the bench grinder on a white wheel. Or green for carbide drill bits. My trick is to hold the bit over the flutes and rest the knuckle on the support. This helps keeping the angles even Allways mind the center and twist it 180° often. I even do this with solid carbide for CNC machining.
