I'm in PA and we have hognut hickory and shagbark hickory. Makes amazing flooring and cabinets! I run a small sawmill and shagbark hickory is harder on my equipment. Especially if the log has sat and dried some. Cool video and cool set up!

The ash are going fast, the ash borer is wiping them out. There are two types of hickory here in NC, shag bark and tight bark. The "tight bark" is actually a couple different types, bitternut and pignut, one is also referred as swamp hickory but I'm not sure which one. But in logging it's just snag bark and tight bark. They're many many species of oak around here. Eastern white oak is probably the most popular for lumber and wildlife, but the bottom land swamp chestnut oak and cherrybark red oak have an incredible growth rate.

Agreed. I’m up in northeast PA and our ashes are destroyed also. Most are standing dead. Firewood.

Eastern Ky is bout wiped out too….hate fallin hickory…bout have to slick stump em to get em to move and fiber is as tough and stringy as any wood I’ve run across and will barberchair…last bit I cut was on ground you had to claw with yer hands on and 80% were hollow and all large old growth..only ones to ever get a dozer on that side landowner said…
@scottw.2450

There's a group of ash in the woods behind the house that are still healthy. I wish I new how to keep the bugs out of them. Like the elms that were wiped out by Dutch elm disease. You hardly ever see an old growth elm. But they're coming back now and I'm glad to see it. Yes hickory has a reputation for being hard and stringy, can't leave a lot of holding wood that's for sure. Pecan is not much better.

Within 2 yr it starts to decay and rot. So many trees gone cuz someone didnt do their job at inspection when load it was on was imported to the states.

Southern shagbark hickory is the best wood for Handles but a good close second is White Ash grown in Nebraska of all places. I've experimented with Missouri White Oak, Missouri Shagbark Hickory, Nebraska and Missouri grown Black Walnut and Nebraska White Ash and the most beautiful is the Walnut but it's not the most durable, the best toughest is the Shagbark Hickory but a real close second is the White Ash like major league baseball bats are made from. I've been making my own handles since I was 14 and in Jr.High wood shop. I have my own patterns for Double Bit axe, Regular Axe, Fallers Axe, Camp Axe, Hatchets and several different types of splitting axe and mauls. I probably make 15-20 a season for people here local and I hang the heads for no extra charge.

To touch on the Ash debate I cut timber north central PA we have really nice ash the borer beetle has been decimating the older growth trees we have been watching for yrs now the slow destruction of this tree. On a good note it will not make ash extinct, why regrowth is always happening I see lots of stickers coming up around stumps and spreading I believe it may be 40 yrs bf we complete the cycle to get back to where this species was.
