I took care of my father at 21. Instead of going out and partying with my friends I was helping my mom with my dad. Your saying is not 100% true. Some families are not able to stay home all day with their parent. Lots of people have 2 people working. Lots of people have children and have to drive them to activities. Some parents you just can't take care of. People with severe alzheimer's are better off in a facility that is equipped to take care of them. Some parents are not willing to move from whatever state they are in. You really can't ask your children to pick up their entire lives (leave their job, take children out of the school they know, and take the children away from their friends). Lots of Western parents Don't kick their children out at 18. That is the problem in the US. You'll find 40 year olds living in their parents basement mooching off of them.

As a westerner (from U.S.), I think we like to put emphasis on not just opinionated women, but independent, self-efficient women who have an "I don't need a Man" attitude. Another thing we put emphasis on is confidence ("Confidence is key sweetie!"-Every mom ever). One time I was reading one of the more shallow fashion magazines and THEY even wrote "you can be the most objectively unattractive people in the world and still can get plenty of guys solely with the power of confidence." Personally, i think that's testament to how much we value confidence in western culture that even the vapidness of Cosmo has to admit that it's seen as paramount. So independence, confidence, power, the ability to crush people with clever, in-your-face comebacks when they're being rude to you, I think I feel pressure to be all those things in this society, but I wonder if any one else feels that way.

That's excellent point! Being confident and independent is really the key in western world, however lots of women in the eastern cultures like to play the venerable card. Like we all have a goal to achieve the sense of presence, but the approach used are totally opposite. I don't know whether history or philosophy caused the eastern culture prefer 'the other way around' method. But I do see a lot of young women in China actually are or trying to be independent and confident, just like in the western society.

+Noelle Meier I think that a woman having a good personality is valued here in the US, but not NEARLY to the extent that looks and physical beauty play. If you look up "Inside Amy Schumer - Sex Prep" here on youtube you can see Amy spoofing the huge pressure American women face in the sex and dating scene to be gorgeous and perfect. I think these magazines churn out way more articles that point out what is wrong with you and how you can change yourself instead of self-confidence boosting articles. Even if you asked a western guy to say with complete honesty the most important things he'd value in a girl he'd probably talk about looks before getting into her personality. Little girls even face incredible pressure to be pretty and cute. How many dolls and role models for them do you see that aren't beautiful, skinny, or young? I don't see many middle aged, well versed and accomplished women being held as idols to girls in the US.

This is my two cents. There are a lot of people who say they hate Western beauty standards, mostly because they come from other cultures. That's understandable. But then they'll abide by another beauty standard which can be detrimental to people in their own societies who don't fit that standard. This is where I think an individualistic mindset is helpful in encouraging people to choose the type of person they want to be attracted to rather than encouraging people to go through things like injections or plastic surgery in order to be accepted by their society.

Ah, also so true about Asian girls dressing up. I always noticed Japanese girls are superb dressers. Mainly the tourists in London. Young Asian girls are so creative and original with fashion. You know when they have been westernised. I always feel so underdressed compared to Asian women and I like to look smart. On the other hand, I have been frowned upon in the UK for looking trendy and smart at work. Since I work in a school as a part time teacher, other women don't get my dress sense. Not so bad these days I have moved from the countryside but it was a nightmare in a rural area I used to live.

Western fashion and hairstyles are more laid back. You'll see western guys with long hair/man buns and just wearing shorts and a t-shirt. Western guys look more rugged and 'manly' in my opinion. Aisan guys are usually very fashionable and like looking professional, for example, shaving their face, wearing nice clothing and doing their hair/makeup. They don't look unmanly but they definitely have more of a feminine appeal. I'm Canadian and I have a lot of Korean and Chinese friends and people in my school and that's what I've noticed when it comes to fashion and those thing. I love the guys fashion sense though.. Especially the boy groups like damn these boys know how to dress! Lol

Not all western girls don't care about what their wear - that's just in the US and in Australia where people are sooo casual all of the time. In Europe, girls put in a lot of efforts to dressing well. In France for example, girls are constantly being judged on how they dress. And even in parts of the US, for example, NYC girls would dress a lot more formal and nicer than someone from Santa Monica CA. In Philippines we are more leaning on to the western style but there's still an Asian touch in our standard like fair skin. We also observe Asian values with a western personalities. So I guess everybody and even foreigners can fit in without adjusting in the society except for the morals and values. Of course we Asians are very strict with it so that's just one thing to look out for when they come to visit the Philippines.

In my honest opinion, this is coming from an asian, I think eastern beauty standards seek to replicate western ones. In many asian countries you see people using skin lighteners to get white skin, dying their hair to get any color that isn't black, contact lenses to get any color that isn't brown. Don't even get me started on the surgeries many asians do to get higher nose bridges and bigger eyes. I AM NOT saying all asians think like this, but if you look at the biggest celebrities in many asian countries, they are either mixed white, have surgeries, or have natural features that are more western than a typical person from their country.

The whitening is not a replicate. This standard started way back ancient times in China like 200 BC. Just because pale skin means no outdoor work/no farming/rich/clean. The girls came from a high status family never allowed to leave their home for their entire life.

Firstly, colored hair and lenses isn't a beauty standard in East Asia. They still very much embrace their dark hair and eyes. And secondly, I genuinely do not believe that most asians, in dyeing their hair or wearing contact lenses, are consciously aiming to look western. It just so happens that Caucasians have a greater variety of hair and and eye color, and many colors we try on ourselves happen to be occurring in their race. We don't all suddenly want to be called "Jessica" or "Ashley" just because we want to see what we look like with a hair and eye colour that isn't black. Thirdly, the hottest celebrities in South Korea such as IU, Suzy, Seolhyun, and Yoona look completely Asian. Growing up as a young girl and watching them on TV, the idea that they look anything other than East Asian had never crossed my mind.

But, the models, actresses, singers and celebrities of Asian countries all pursue or have traits which are white by nature. Second, secular and religious are not two opposites, and also secular is not a personality trait it is a political term and also you gotta define what you mean by religious coz I find this term is defined differently by many people. Asians generally are referred to as not being religious but that is not really true. It is just the concept of religion in Asia is different which is a big topic to discuss here. As of superstition part of religious belief, Asians are actually nearly as superstitious as Middle-Easterners. As for modernity, you seem to be referring to the Japanese society and not Asians in general but this is mainly due to the economic stance of Japan and the capitalistic culture imported from the west but in general Asians are pretty traditional. This is also not really a personality trait either. When I talk personality, I mean people in the Middle East, like in the West are more outspoken, opinionated, initiative and self-oriented than Asians where the culture values more being a part of the society than being an individual. I like Asian beauty standard better. In this video, they mean Asian as in Mongoloid (East Asia and some of Southeast Asia) I'm Filipino but some Filipinos don't look Mongoloid but I'm also part Chinese so I think I'm considered Mongoloid. Anyway, I find light skin prettier (I don't mean this as in discriminating to darker skin-ed people, I'm not very light-skinned myself). My family is the same way too. My grandmother, for some reason, wouldn't like it if I dated a non-Southeast/East Asian because their skin is darker. I also feel that I'm more attractive when I act more soft-spoken/gentle.

Even the beauty standards between northern and southern China have major differences, and that's within the same country. European countries can each have different beauty standards, America is all over the board, it's just silly to think you can divide the globe with only one line.
