Imo this was one of the last glimpses of the 90s Phil, 2000-2003 Phil was a complete villain, dominating the whole square, a bully, controlling and utterly heartless. Phil Mitchell in his prime.

Yes, in 1996-1999 Phil started to be on the way to becoming the nasty bully. But he was still Mary Poppins compared to Jan 2000-Dec 2003 and c2011-present. Phil did become nicer in 2006 but by 2007 they were reverting him again after the Stella business.

I think that the breakdown of Phil & Kathy’s marriage was really the turning point in his life. It truly damaged him and I don’t think he ever really recovered from that, and became the horrible person he is. Combined with his and Ricky’s two handed in the petrol station (when the only remaining good friend in his life left), Phil became a monster

Really can’t help but feel sympathy for Phil in this clip. The three most important people in his life have gone. First grant then Kathy and Ben. No wonder he turned into a different person

Kathys last screen appearance before her off screen 'death' 6 years later. Stupid decision to kill her off. Sensible move to resurrect the Walford icon in 2015.

The real reason for Kathy dying: Tony Jordan (the writer) got into a fight with Gillian Taylforth's boyfriend (apparently he threw Jordan down a flight of stairs) in the 90s, so Tony Jordan killed Kathy off in revenge.

@@paulyb7267the writers/producers seemed to be so petty in the old days. Did you know Angie watts was supposed to be played by another actress until 3 weeks before they started shooting because she suggested a costume decision for her character and the director I think it was went mental and fired her. Then apparently Peter Dean (Pete Beale) had an argument with her and she killed him off as a result.

But Kathy Beale hasnt had any good plots since she returned. Whats the big deal with Kathy? Her character is quite boring. I never watched ee in the 90s so i dont get whats so amazing about her. Killing her off in 2006 led to amazing stories like bens return n stella.

@gh0510 If you haven't watched any 90s or 80s EE then you probably won't get what an icon Kathy is. Kathy has had some great stories recently with the Keanu Christmas murder and Rocky marriage. She has a strong link to old Walford. Killing her off screen was not worth any short term stories that came after. EE and fans wanted her back so much they were happy to resurrect her from the dead.

Final appearance of EastEnders Kathy Beale & Ben Mitchell. Until Kathy returns to Walford, very much alive & well physically 15 years later - 19th February 2015. Also Kathy's fake death confirmed, 6 years later (2006) - when Ben returns to Walford that year, without his mum from South Africa.
