This conversation was recorded during a live session on Clubhouse @philosophybabble Swami Sarvapriyananda and Bernardo Kastrup conducted a profound and illuminating exchange on their perspectives surrounding life and existence. The discussion involved a deep exploration of various eastern and western philosophical schools of thought. The captivating discourse held the room in complete attention, with only a handful of questions punctuating the enlightening conversation. If you want to stay updated on upcoming live sessions on Clubhouse, please subscribe to the channel. And, don't forget to share, mention, and like!
Topic of discussion : Perspectives on life and Existence
1. Nature of Consciousness
2. Mind and Body problem
3. Self and the world
Summary:
This dialogue between philosopher Bernardo Kastrup and Swami Sarvapriyananda is a rich exploration of Advaita Vedanta, a non-dualistic Hindu philosophy, and consciousness. Bernardo commence with the three fundamental philosophical questions, around the nature of reality, self, and knowledge. Kastrup addresses accusations of plagiarizing from the Upanishads, leading to a discussion contrasting Western and Eastern philosophical approaches. The conversation dives into non-dualism, the "nothingness", and the hard problem of consciousness. Key concepts of Advaita Vedanta, such as Ananda (bliss), Shunyata (void), and the experience of Samadhi, are examined in depth. They also broach the existential perspective of life as a "cosmic error," countering it with Jivanmukti, enlightenment while living. They tackle idealist interpretations of consciousness, the concept of God in Hinduism, and the difference between Samadhi and sleep. The discussion concludes with an exploration between memory, consciousness, the mind-body problem, and the distinction between the personal and universal mind. Throughout, delightful blending of Eastern and Western philosophical perspectives.

Thank you for this! I have been waiting to see Bernardo converse with the Swami for quite some time now. It was better than I had envisaged. How Bernardo's Idealism meshes in with Advaita, Buddhism and the other non dual religions, has made me understand the nature of existence better.

Swami Vivekananda, the chief disciple and successor to Ramakrishna, said that Ramakrishna initiated a mass tidal wave of spirituality that over the centuries will bring about mass spiritual awakenings. Many people are awakening even today. Eckhart Tolle is just one of many such people. Now science, which used to be the enemy of religion, is fast becoming its friend.

Beautiful conversation ❤️🕉. Swamiji is so unassuming that his depth of understanding is easy to miss - and I had until now! 😮. Bernardo is just lovely, such a beautiful mind and more. Two things stuck out to me that I thought maybe in a different context would've been addressed more or differently. First was when Bernardo asked about bliss, and the second was his comment that he has no idea how to get back there (to his experience of the void is what he was referring to). I do think Bernardo appreciated Swamiji's answer, which was a great one, but I thought it would be good to add that bliss really is a very limited and even misleading definition of "Ananda" - and therefore not particularly helpful to someone trying to understand it as Bernardo was. Perhaps broadening the definition to "limitless fullness" or "no-second-thing-ness" is helpful IMO to point to our unimpeded nature and to convey more closely what existence / consciousnesses is "like" prior to experience. The second thing is simply that the idea of "getting back" to a certain experience is a dualistic viewpoint, whereas "you" (as swamiji said many times) are the unchanging witness of - in this case - both the one who "experienced the void" and the one who now apparently experiences something else. Swamiji did eloquently speak about extracting wisdom from experience at a different point in the conversation, just not then. Thank you to the organizers and participants for an incredible dialogue 🙏🏻❤️
@TatTvamAsi173
@TatTvamAsi173 6 ай бұрын
Exactly. Bliss is more like Purnata or “fullness”, according to the Jñānārṇavatantra. And bernado's "getting back" to that experience means feeling the same bodily experience that he felt during his time in that state.
@MariaElena51185
@MariaElena51185 6 ай бұрын
I fully resonate Bernardo’s feelings of wanting to ‘get back’ to the void/silent state that seems to have ‘gone away.’ Its living in this dense 3D reality that constantly poisons the body/mind daily.. the air, the ground, the water.. he did say the past is experienced now. Nothing (no thing) exists, ever actually happens. It’s the usual paradox of 3D trap here.

My path to this insightful discussion was by way of TOE podcast who introduced me to Bernardo, who I discovered via Donald Hoffman. I studied Tibetan Buddhism and for some reason was uninterested in Hinduism until now. This conversation was so illuminating and rewarding. I’m very thankful to the organizers and participants. The similarities between analytic idealism and Vedanta give me hope for humanity. Western philosophy is coming around.

I just wanted to share my thoughts on Bernardo's question on the void experience and bliss. It is the difference between a contentless experience and being content. A person experiencing the void might not necessarily be content. It might not be the experience that they want to be having. Hence they move away from the state in order to report it. Whereas bliss is being content irrespective of the contents of experience. An extreme example would be a person in rage or agony might still be content as they are experiencing exactly what they want to experience. The fact that these experiences exist is evidence that bliss generates it. But why would one want that? That is the real question. And only the real you knows the answer.

Finally I understand what I’ve been experiencing for 2 decades playing this ancient and profound instrument which has a single fundamental note or drone that I can modulate to generate various frequency patterns or distortions of the fundamental note. I've watched and heard this conversation several times already and every single time I'm blown away by a new, very personal and experiential insight. Sravana, sravana sravana. When the mind is stilled and is devoid of all objects, you see the illumination for itself. Until then, you have enjoyed the light simply as a means to illuminate the objects of the mind... your thoughts, emotions, ideas, opinions, judgements, fears, hopes, plans, schedules etc...Empty mind illumined by illumination. I see the mind as room crammed full with belongings. A stilled mind is one where you have emptied the room of all objects and you can stand in the light and truly meet yourself...or the truth...❤

so great to have 2 great minds during this discussion. I usually get frustrated when Bernardo is with someone who just doesn't get him and can't ask the right questions or really dive into his mind. This was very refreshing.

This conversation was one of the best and most enjoyable I have seen on KZbin. I hope that Bernardo will talk to more proponents of Indian philosophy, including Yogacara and Vishitadvaita

Sorry. I think not. Because More Words and Practice given importance in All Indian Philosophies other than Advaita, and as Bernardo has no interest upon Languages and Words because of their Base/Description is still questionable, it's unlikely for a person like Bernardo to talk about those, IMHO.

@@viswa2311 Advaita Vedanta gives importance to words and practice equally. Look up how the monastics are trained. No need of validation from anyone. It is not the philosophy that the west have to learn from Bharat. Rather, how 'darshan' informs even the minutest details of 'rashtra' as well as 'rajya', is the thing to learn. In the current setting, 'rajya' seems like a lost cause for Bharat, but the 'rashtra' is still alive, if one looks closely. I know that the 'rashtra' has been stabbed, but it will survive. The various classical art forms, language, architecture, society etc are merely expressions of the 'rashtra'. Obviously, Bharat has a lot to learn from the 'West' as well. Ignoring the 'material' is only going to lead to 'suicide'. I understand that. But, please, western philosophy wrt the 'self' is useless. Whether 'they' 'agree' or 'disagree' should be immaterial.

Funny thing, stumbled on to Swami several years ago. Had read the Gita and was familiar with the Mahabharata. I then read the Upanishads. It made so much sense, I reaffirmed my traditional Christian practice. Crazy... paradoxical? As Whitman says: "(I contain multitudes)" I call it walking and chewing gum at the same time. At any rate, thank you for presenting these two amazing men!! Vaya con Dios...[ ]...
