CORRECTIONS: 11:41 & 27:23 - If 1 or more players have 1 or more cities while being in the Stone Age, phases 6-12 are not skipped. Those players draw the trade card or cards, the Market Board is filled, players may trade if possible, after which the cards from the Market Board are discarded.

Also at 41:31 ! Thank you for this video - it did evoke pleasant memories from more than 30 years ago when I played the predecessor (AH Civilization) for the first time. That was basically my door-opener into the world of the more 'eccentric' board games and has influenced my life in a major way. I will definitely have to get Mega Empires - even if just for nostalgic value...

The beneficiary in case of a calamity card (exept Civil War and Tyranny ) is the one who gave you that card in a trade, if a trade was made otherwise indeed check stock for cities and so on.

I felt it was important to start with emphasizing the overall potential scope of the player counts before focusing on the comparably smaller 3p map for the rest of the video :)

This game is very similar to the Avalon Hill Civilization, also GMT have released a game called Ancient Civilizations of the inner sea.
@2ndPerk3 жыл бұрын
It's essentially the same game as Civ. Primary differences are that there are about twice the number of advances, more calamities, and some rules are more streamlined. The other half of the game, Western Empires, is on the same medditeranean map as the original, but expanded to encompass almost all of europe and north africa.

Ooh, looking forward to this... I had the original AH Civilization. Really unique game when it came out. Maybe the first civilization themed game? Would there have been a Sid Meier's Civilization without that game?

Seeing how the population spreads across the map is really interesting. Very cool game, but I'm not sure if I'd ever get the group/time to play it.
@Skycroft10003 жыл бұрын
Great job on this complex game, Jon! Personally I don't like the random element of calamities at all, and so much of the game revolves around them. I love civilization building games but not moving troops on a map, and this game has that too. So even leaving aside that this game is something I will never have time for, it's really not for me. A pity, there is a kind of draw to 'event' games like this you can't get anywhere else, but I would much rather play Twilight Imperium than this if I did have ~8 hours to spare (and people who would be willing to play it with me).

I think it would have been valuable to explain the normal trade round, for 5+ players, as that is really the best and most interesting part of the game.

I contemplated it, but I saw the goal of this video being focused specifically on showing how the Advanced Civ / Mega-Civ framework can now work with 3 and 4 players. Perhaps I should have added it in there afterall, but that was my thinking at the time.

@JonGetsGame, are you absolutely sure about not drawing commodity cards until not in early Bronze Age? I don't remember that rule at all. Or maybe it's a 3-4 player variant rule only ?
@GettingGames3 жыл бұрын
This relates to all player counts as far as I can tell. The rulebook says "If all players still have zero cities (Stone Age), skip to phase 13." I suppose that can be confusing since you can build cities during the stone age, but you can't leave the stone age until the end of the 5th round at the earliest. One of the game's designers watched the entire video and gave me some rules clarification feedback for a couple points, and they didn't say anything about this being incorrect. That leads me to think that I interpreted that rule correctly.
@Sir_Yaro3 жыл бұрын
@@GettingGames I did not play MCIV for over 3 years now :( , so details are a little fuzzy, but if someone would ask me I could swear players can get commodity cards while in Stone Age (providing they have cities). So I think you should start drawing cards since 24:30. Otherwise, it would be VERY hard (if possible) to get 130-150 or more points to buy 3 cards in 3 rounds. And I don't remember having to wait on AST in that pre-bronze age spot like... ever? :)
@brianmccarty36153 жыл бұрын
You don't draw cards until you have cities -- this is the same as Advanced Civ. You could have a city on turn 3 (I think) but that would be very sub-optimal, For what it is worth, the Mega Civ rule book (v1.2) makes no reference to "Stone Age" in step 6A -- it just says "all players draw cards equal their number of cities on the board"
@GettingGames3 жыл бұрын
Hmm, now I am worried I got this wrong and it wasn't caught. I skipped all card drawing even with cities until I actually performed a Step 6 because it was my understanding that Step 6 was fully skipped until at least one player was out of the Stone Age.
@2ndPerk3 жыл бұрын
@@GettingGames I am almost certain that is incorrect, and commodity cards are drawn as soon as cities are on the board. This just tends not to happen until after the stone age, do to the optimal play being to build 3 or 4 cities on the last turn of it.
@2ndPerk3 жыл бұрын
At about 17 mins you could have demonstrated a very bad play made by the Indus civ. They moved 1 unit onto a 2 pop tile, adjacent to multiple Parthian units. If Parthia moves 2 of its own units on, they eliminate and Indus unit, while incurring now losses - a major advantage at that stage in the game.
@GettingGames3 жыл бұрын
Ah, that is true. This goes to show my novice level of understanding the game's strategy. I was figuring things like this out as I filmed the video, in fact I went back and refilmed one movement step because I'd accidentally made several very stupid moves where Indus in particular would have lost many population while the attacker wouldn't have lost any. I think I was alittle careless with Indus overall.

Seems like a somewhat simple game for how much is going on . Would you say this is harder to learn then say eclipse or gaia project?
@GettingGames3 жыл бұрын
I was surprised at the simplicity of the overall design, despite the fact that it has a massive rulebook (it has lots of good illustrations). I'd say the overall rules would be actually easier to learn for Eastern Empires than Eclipse, and probably even Gaia Project as well.
