Pico Duarte is the highest mountain in the Dominican Republic, the Island of Hispaniola, and the Caribbean. At 10,164 feet it is also the highest mountain on the island of Hispaniola.
I did my trek with Guias de Altura (guiasdealturas..., a local guiding company that guides several adventures in the Dominican Republic. I chose the express 2.5-day trek, but 3.5 days is the standard trek length. The 3.5-day itinerary is as follows:
Acclimatization day: Arrival at Base Camp La Cienaga at 7PM - Meet our staff
Day 1: Hike from La Ciénaga Base Camp to Comparticion Camp (18 km - 9 hours)
Day 2: Hike from Comparticion to SUMMIT to Comparticion (10 km - 5 hours)
Day 3: Hike from Comparticion to Base Camp (18 km - 7 hours)
The 2.5-day trek simply combines days 2 and 3 together.
The trek begins in La Ciénaga at the headquarters of the Parque Nacional Jose Armando Bermúdez. Park permits are required. All persons are required by the National Park Service to hire a local guide, and you are not allowed to enter the park without one.
The trek is approximately 14.36 miles mile to the summit. But the kicker is that you are traveling from 3,642 feet of elevation at the trailhead to 10,164 feet of elevation at the summit.
The meals were provided by the guide. The guides also utilized pack animals to shuttle your gear and group gear to high camp, also known as La Comparticion.
The is a nice hike with a considerable altitude gain.
Route (out/back): La Ciénaga trail to the summit and back.
