Hello Dick and Jose, glad to see Jose is back in action and fully recovered. That Eastonmade machine is an absolute game changer. The only improvement I can think of “wood” be possibly making a set of grizzly bars that you could set up on or at the end of the conveyor. Dick, Just a couple of things. First, its great to see Jose back in action, you two work great as a team. Glad you are enjoying the box wedge, I know I enjoy mine, I love the lack of manhandling the wood. The two things i noticed, 1. The first few rounds before you sped up the video the box wedge seemed to be self adjusting in height, I’ve heard that that happens with EM and other hydraulic adjustable box wedges, but hadn’t seen it. Thanks for showing it. 2. Do you anticipate a problem bagging a lot more of the slash and trash from the box wedge and the attached conveyor? When I finish a cord of splitting I generally have a tractor bucket of scrap. I don’t see how that is screened off with the EM 22-28, same was true for the 37D in Back 40’s woodyard. Much appreciate your thoughts as you use the machine more and figure out its quirks. I actually was seriously considering a 22-28 last year before I placed an order for the Blue Ox, the lead times in 2022 kept me from doing so, but by the looks of it I would have had great company with all the new owners this year. Take care and have a great weekend. - Brent
@oldguyfirewood
@oldguyfirewood 9 ай бұрын
Hey Brent! I was lucky to have Jose in the Woodyard. Normally he just helps me 2 days a week with my landscape maintenance. 1. The wedge issue was operator error. If you hold the wedge “down lever” until the lift cylinder stops, it is SUPPOSED to disengage with the wedge. This allows for wedge changeouts. If you stop the second the wedge bottoms out on the beam, the box wedge stays engaged and it won’t ride up. I Know I like the adjustable box so I can control the size of the splits. 2. I was surprised at how little scrap it produced. After splitting 1 cord I had enough fine scrap to fill about 2 five gallon buckets. I think with knotty or twisted rounds it will be more, but I’ll probably just use the single wedge on the Wolfe Ridge for really gnarly wood.
@AroundTheYard-MN
@AroundTheYard-MN 9 ай бұрын
Dick, Good to know about the wedge “down lever”. It’s one of those things that never gets talked about on how it actually works. I understand now, thank you. As for the scrap, that is excellent. I suppose if you feed it with high quality rounds you’ll get high quality splits. I do tend to sort off the double barrels and rounds I think it may have an issue with. Wether its the 35SHO or 22-28, it won’t be that they can’t be spit, it is that your cycle time is going to rise, and your finished product isn’t going to be the same quality. So at that point your making fireplace, bonfire, or for personal use firewood. I don’t know about you but I have plenty or personal use… I need the Grade “A” bark-less small splits that fly off the shelf in bundles. Have a great Sunday Sir, enjoy your day!

@oldguyfirewood
@oldguyfirewood 9 ай бұрын
Hi Dan. I’m still learning how to place unusually shaped pieces in the cradle. Straight rounds are no problem at all. Tapered, knotty, crooked pieces will push through, but produce a lot of trash. I think you’re correct, tapered pieces go best with small end towards the wedge.

Dick, I’m gonna go ahead and share the goods, 😅. The company that I get my totes from is called Diesel Direct. I pay $15 per tote. I’ve been picking up a trailer load of 26-275 gal totes for the past four weeks. They contained motor oil, transmission fluid, and antifreeze. This particular location ends up with an abundance of empty totes. They sell them cheap, to keep their yard from becoming overfilled. They’ll load them for you. They set 26 totes aside for me every week. You may want to get a couple of barrels. Some of the totes may have a gallon or two of the fluids remaining in them. Since you have a tractor, you can completely empty them, and then take the barrels to drop off for recycling when they get full. If you can somehow get a direct number to the Durham location,…you may be able to get farther than what I did. I was able to call the main number out there, and couldn’t tell if I got transferred to that location. If you can get ahold of them, ask them if they use IBC totes as part of their bulk delivery services. Do a search for “bulk fuel delivery” or something like that. There are other companies out there that may use them as well. Hope this info helps.
