Brian it was a blast hanging out with you ! Your knowledge of railroads is pretty vast and extensive. I was glad we were able to do railfanning in the Columbus area as well. It was a hard job and worked out well. There were a lot of moving parts and pieces trying to get that door in place. I know people wanted us to video the action, but using hydraulic jacks, hammers and wedges is very dangerous. If something were to go wrong while videotaping we could lose life or limb. Brian has a great work ethic and definitely walks the line , actually he walks with a purpose. I guess if you see me at the end of the video I should’ve stepped it up a bit. Brian and I took a walk around the ETR in the morning and I had a hard time keeping up with him.

Good job all round Fellas thanks .

As I understand it, the Panhandle Line connected Pittsburgh to St.Louis via Columbus and Indianapolis. The PRR needed permission from Virginia to build through the Panhandle in the 1850s It was a busy line at one time. It went through the township whete I live, South Fayette, near Pittsburgh. Conrail abandoned the line in 1990. The right of way from Collier Township, PA to Weirtion, WV is a bike trail with a buried fiber optic cable. As the right of way exists, Amtrak could rebuild the line to have passenget rail conbecting Pittsburgh to Columbus.

NORAC Rule 16, Blue signal protection of workers. I hope Newark, Ohio isn't like Newark, NJ. I worked both freight and passenger service. Passenger service had regular hours, better for a family man. When they started the renewal projects in Newark, NJ Cory Booker was mayor. NJ Transit required us to announce, "now arriving Broad St. Newark, home of the NJ renaissance." Currently, it's 50 and sunny at 1523 2/8/23. Liked the video, thanks. I'll be wearing my ETR t-shirts when the weather warms up.

Awesome. Blue flag and safety cone retreived. Excellent work guys! THANK YOU FOR POSTING. I noticed that you were standing next to what looked to be big rolls of paper. I told you that the MCCLOUD River Railroad and later the McCloud Railway had a staple business of about 20 cars inbound a week of bulk paper like that which was then reloaded to trucks to their final destination. McCloud is ALMOST Exactly half way between Seattle and Los Angeles. So that reload point worked out. Is the E T R half way between two important rail shippers? Just a thought.

I think the T&OC (NYC) crossed the PRR panhandle line at Heath, OH and it was the B&O (Sandusky-Athens) line that crossed at Newark, OH. Secondly was it Bradford or Bellefontaine that you were thinking of.

Going back in history that area was known as Central City and shows as such on many older railroad maps. The T&OC line crossing there went north and joined the Western Sub at Stanley Yard near Toledo. That line also went through Fostoria and is where the first section of railroad in the U.S. to have CTC. Now it's almost all gone and I THINK the tower in Fostoria where the CTC board was is still there. I believe Newark to Columbus was jointly owned, 50/50, by the B&O and Pennsy with it being dispatched by the B&O. Later it became CSX/Conrail and then CSX/State of Ohio. I may be a bit off here but I believe the Ohio Central bought the Ohio part of ownership. Later CSX pulled out of Newark, leasing all the lines out of Newark to the Ohio Central and selling their 50% to Ohio Central giving the Ohio Central complete ownership Newark to Columbus. Newark to Columbus was the C&N Subdivision. I worked that line with CSX until leaving for Amtrak in 2004. The industry was Box USA and I spotted many a car there. Don't know if it still is Box USA these days.

T&OC was the Toledo & Ohio Central (subsidiary of the New York Central). This line went South to Thurston where it switched into the T&OC line from Columbus, then went South to the Ohio River, where it interchanged with the Kanawha & Michigan, which went into the West Virginia coal fields following the Kanawha River. T&OC split at Thurston on the way North, with the Western passenger line going through Columbus, and the Eastern freight line going by Newark. The old T&OC station in Columbus still stands, I believe is now the Salvation Army building on Broad St. near Veterans Memorial. Scioto Tower is where the T&OC passenger line crossed the Panhandle. It was operated into Conrail as the Western Branch. The Eastern line from Thurston up to Hebron was removed late in the Penn Central / early Conrail years.

You would have been a little more legal if you had placed the blue flag at that flip-over derail between the loaded cars and the building, and locked that derail on the track with your own lock. You have to prevent access to the work area with either a switch lined against the track or a derail with your own lock. Plus Jim wouldn't have needed to walk all the way to the far end twice.
@royreynolds108 Жыл бұрын
The blue flag can only be removed by the person who installed it. Since you both were there at installation, he can remove it. You are correct, crappy door. I worked in the MoKan Division Engineer's office at Kansas City, KS of the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific RR in the summers of 1965, 66, & 67 when I was going to school for Civil Engineer.
